San Francisco Joints

Many have wondered where I actually go in The City and when I travel around the world...some have even asked...but even if you haven't, it's finally here...my favorite experiences in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my favorite joints around the world.

This is my guide to the best places to eat, drink, and tour in The City. And yes...there is only one city here, and if you have to ask, hit the back button on your browser now.

I've tried all these places myself, and they are all fantastic, so don't ask which place I like best. This list is still in progress, many more to come soon.

For more ideas, mistersf.com has a lot of great other ideas as he combs the City for interesting joints.

One of my favorite California cuisine restaurants...great mix of food, with really interesting flavor pairings you'd never expect. The chef mixes in a bit of creole and soul food with excellent prepared meat and fish dishes.

A couple of my favorite dishes are:
* Barbequed Shrimp, Worstershire and parsely garlic sauce (starter)
* Sweet onion and blue cheese fondue with fingerling potatoes, asparagus and cauliflower (starter)
* Faith's warm Smithfield ham and cheese toast with poached egg and jalapeno cream (starter)
* Sauteed day boat scallops with smoked andouille sausage jambalaya, basmati rice and crab butter
* Slow-roasted duck with toasted wild rice, pecans, spiced dates and gingersnap gravy

Great wine bar as well. Some great choices:
* Rose, Jean-Luc Colombo, "Côte Bleue", Côte-du-Rhône, Rhône, France, 04
* Tempranillo, Rioja, 2002 (this was one of my favorite wines)

Map this on Platial
In the Ferry Plaza Building:
1 Ferry Building
San Francisco, CA 94111

Incredibly innovative and flavorful Vietnamese fusion restaurant. Incredible Clay Pot dishes. Very difficult to get a table, recommend calling far ahead for reservations, or simply walking in during lunch to sit at the bar. If you are just wanting take away food, few know about "Out the Door", inside the main ferry plaza, where they have redefined fast food - the quality of Slanted Door and some of their best dishes, cheap and fast!

Check out the Belgian beers and German Rieslings for a great food pairing.

My favorites include the Imperial Rolls, Grapefruit Jicama Salad, Catfish Claypot, Cellophane Noodles, Chinese Broccoli or Green Bean side dishes.

Map this on Platial
Recognized as possibly the best Italian restaurant in the country, and I absolutely can't disagree.

Make sure you go as a very small crowd, it's very difficult to get the same experience with a large party. Surprisingly inexpensive for the quality, and an absolutely stunning Italian wine list...make sure to try the Lambrusco if they have it, it has finally matured as a sparkling red wine of quality and is delightful.

My last visit really was exquisite, their salumi that is locally dry aged is fantastic, as is their prosciutto selection. If you've never experienced Burrata cream filled Mozarella, you're in for a particular treat. Also a fantastic Bergamont Orange sorbet (think Earl Grey tea) for dessert that was astonishing in flavor and creativity.

You simply won't find boring Italian food, simply put you will have the finest flavor balancing and perfectly cooked meats, homemade pizzas and pastas as well.

Map this on Platial
OK, favorite neighborhood place near the ballpark in South Beach. Best low-end food theory restaurant, you can't beat this place for the price, and you certainly can't beat their Caribbean food. They feature a very cute "middle of the block" patio that inset from the street. You'll miss this place if you don't look twice, it looks like a tiny little store front.

You absolutely must try their Corn Cakes (amazing, never had anything like this), Jerk Chicken, and amazingly good fish dishes. I especially like their Ceviche and their fried Snapper Bits. Warm and inviting, with a young lived in atmosphere in Noe Valley.

Excellent southern flavor cuisine, you're bound to find black eyed peas and greens in some of the dishes, but also with a fusion flare. Also had a quite interesting crispy risotto cakes filled with goat cheese.

While I've never much been able to find fun and good quality german cuisine (even in Germany), it has certainly found a home in Hayes Valley.

Fun, fun, fun...this place is warm and inviting, with a lot of communal seating which makes it very social, making it a great eating and drinking hall.

Most importantly, they are home to the best German beer menu I've seen stateside, and most on tap as well which is rare.

The food is surprisingly good quality, making an incredibly light schnitzel, as well as a wonderful buttery and light spaezle. The black forest cake is also quite good.

Map this on Platial
Being a savory crepes lover, I love going here for dinner. Certainly not your sidewalk crepes joint, Ti Couz has reinvented the crepe, spicing it up with many unique offerings.

You have to love the mexican gourd jellyfish lamps, reminds me of Playa del Carmen.

Map this on Platial
Sexy lounge styled restaurant, great bead curtains. Food is good quality, but expensive. Circa turns into a happening bar/lounge after 10 or so, keep your table until late in the evening to have a place to sit and hold court.

Good small plates:
Poached shrimp, sliders, mac and cheese, fat-iron steak.

Named after a famous pub in the UK, the folks from Town Hall have certainly upscaled the pub with Town hall. Housed in wonderfully restored old publishing house featuring the original brick, wood floors and metal and wood beams, it's a warm and inviting environment.

The food is a great mix of casual style French and California cuisine...you must start with the Canadian styled Poutine which is potato wedges fried and covered with fontina and an rich beef gravy. Also had a wonderful Monk fish with Chard and braised Ox sauce, amazing Winter Squash soup with sage oil, and Pork Belly with Poached Egg on a mixed salad...overall each dish was very well balanced and creative "warm" flavors you won't typically find at restaurants in San Francisco. Very creative wine list, we had the Royal Tokaji from Hungary, a nice change.

Most recent trip, I went the shellfish route, SH has an excellent selection of very fresh oysters. Also had the baked oysters which were good, but not great. Started with a white bean soup topped with pesto which was wonderful and very well balanced. The dungeness crab salad has an amazingly fresh appeal and is drenched in a great olive oil dressing. The foie gras torchon was quite good quality and matched with an excellent apricot reduction.

Service was extraordinary, rare for a new restaurant to be this well tuned. Very catering as well to my young daughter who joined, made us feel at home.

Map this on Platial
Wink to me is the best restaurant in Austin, delivering extraordinary quality French influenced cuisine using locally farmed ingredients. You can always count on a great Foie Gras dish, as well as wonderful chic comfort food.

The wine selection is fantastic and carries over into the great Wink Wine Bar next door that also carries the same menu as the full restaurant. If you're looking for a casual but sexy wine bar experience, it's the place to go.

Map this on Platial
Casual coastal Italian cuisine in Noe Valley.

Starting with the wine list, it consists of a fun unique selection of Italian, French, Spanish and Basque wines. Try the Txomin Extaniz Txakolina as a fantastic pairing with seafood.

While the menu is actually small, absolutely everything is excellent. The arctic char on top of celery root puree covered with a poached egg is wonderful, and the butterfish sealed in parchment is an absolutely an inspiration in richness and warmth.

I wasn't quite so fascinated with the desserts, I found the flavor balance a bit off compared to the main courses, and also a bit dry on the torte. The cannoli is probably the best choice here.

Erna's Elderberry House

Simply put Erna's is the only high quality dining experience near or in Yosemite...however the price is very elevated as it is up in the remote reaches and is truly in a class of its own. Expect to spend $90/person for the menu and $40 for a 3 or $70 for a 6 wine flight per person.

As a pure prix fixe menu, Erna's provides a unique menu each evening offering up to 6 courses to choose from.

Erna's is connected to it's sister establishment Chateau du Sureau, which is simply one of the finest upscale bed and breakfasts in California, far outclassing it's local "in Yosemite park" competition at the Ahwahnee Lodge which is highly overrated IMO. Anyone staying at the hotel automatically gets reservations each evening (you don't have to use them). Otherwise you must call for reservations.

The wine is a bit pricey considered it is mostly locally grown and normally inexpensive, but you will get good pairings, and certainly wines from the central valley you will not have tried before. Loved the Westbrook wine farm Viognier-Valdiguie Madera 2005, and the St. Amant Tempranillo Amador 2004.

A few tips on the food, I prefer picking a smaller menu of their better preparations as their appetizer, salad and desserts are not at all inspiring. So here's what I did....the amuse is always creative, their soup chef is a genius and is always simply phenomenal, and their meats are so incredibly juicy and tender.

Some menus I had when I went there:

#1:
* Amuse: Crispy veal sweet breads with caraway and water chestnuts in goulash sauce
* Pan seared sea bass fillet and red cabbage risotto with baby carrots, bok choy and pecorino romano in a bleeding heart radish broth
* Roasted parsnip soup with goose dumpling and chive crepes
* Herb crusted rack of lamb, lentils, boudin noir and puntarelle, rosewater glazed asparagus, juniper lamb jus
* Salad of young field greens, marinated Belgian endive and artichokes, savory-black pepper vinaigrette
* Dark chocolate mousse cake and toasted pecan creme caramel

#2:
* Amuse: Venison pate, lingonberry coulis, spiced pecans
* Acorn squash soup, smoked potato beignet, white truffle foam
* Sliced pork tenderloin, glazed mustard spatzle, braised baby leeks and red cabbage, fennel seed-pork jus

Map this on Platial
