Boston, Mass: 5,819 census homeless (single day estimate) 2005

        from the website:

"Many cities in the United States take an annual census of their homeless population, and use this data for decision making and also report it to the federal agency, HUD, as it is required for any city receiving federal monies for the homeless, especially for housing. The methods used for counting the number of homeless may vary from city to city.[18]

December 2005 homeless estimates from major U.S. cities (single day estimate):[19]

    * Boston - 5,819 (total area population 569,165)~1.0%
    * Chicago - 6,715 (total area population 2,862,244)~0.2%
    * Denver - 5,000 (total population 580,000)~0.8%
    * Detroit - 14,827 (total area population 900,198)~1.6%
    * Los Angeles - 91,000 (total area population 3,300,000)~2.7%
    * New York - 48,155 (total area population 8,104,179)~0.5%
    * San Francisco - 6,248 (total area population 744,230)~0.8%
    * Seattle - 8,000 (total population 560,000)~1.4%
    * Washington DC - 5,518 (total area population 553,523)~0.9%"

        This is where I saw a homeless woman smoking one day. Not smoking a cigarette, but smoking, as in 'on fire.' Someone tried to pat her down to put the fire out, but she wouldn't have it. She was certainly schizophrenic. It was quite a sight, I must say.

Map this on Platial
One of the largest parks in Tokyo.
Situated between Shibuya and Harajuku, two of the most well known Tokyo shopping districts.
The famous Meiji-Jingu (Meiji Shrine) is located in the middle.

On our first night in Japan as complete strangers, the cabbie dropped us off on the wrong side of the park. Walking through in complete darkness, trying to get through to Yoyogi Olympic Centre/Youth Hostel, we encountered several homeless, scary ravens, two men TAPDANCING, and many dead ends.

Map this on Platial

Heartside Community Garden

        This is the Heartside Community Garden. I had the priviledge of tilling the soil in this garden one year. Thanks Richa. This was my first larger garden experience. I had a six by twenty foot space to work with and plant what I wish. I had to clear the spot and turn the sod as it had become overgrown. I planted watermelon, squash, purple pole beans on a crucifix I salvaged from the basement of the apartment I was living in, lemon cucumbers (yellow and roundish), and tomatoes. The plot went pretty wild that summer and the garden was eventually overrun by the transient community in the area, but we got a bumper crop of beans! I donated my harvest to the Hard Times Cafe, a local group of homeless folk who gathered to cook, eat, and dicuss their situation. I had one watermelon that made it and it was given as a birthday present to one of the chaps at the Cafe. All in all it was a good summer project and a lot of fun to boot!

Map this on Platial

Washington,DC:  14,537 homeless in 06/02

        from the washington post article:

"The fourth annual point-in-time survey counted 14,537 homeless men, women and children -- up 1.8 percent from last year's <2001> survey by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

...

The tally includes 11,386 people considered "literally homeless": living outdoors, in precarious housing or in transitional programs, or relying upon the area's patchwork of emergency shelters and services for help. An additional 3,151 are considered "permanently supported homeless," depending upon homeless services but in a stable setting."

Map this on Platial

Ohio: 27,867 estimated homeless any given night in 2001

        from the website:

"To determine the estimated point-in-time homeless population:
As just reported, approximately 700,000 homeless people in this country on any given night are homeless. The country's total population for 2001 was 285 million. If you divide the estimated point-in-time homeless figure (700,000) by the total population (285 million), you can estimate that approximately .00245 percent of the country's total population experienced homelessness on any given night in 2001. If you apply that rationale to Ohio's total population (11, 374,541), you can estimate that 27,867 Ohioans experienced homelessness on any given night in 2001."

Map this on Platial
