The Book Market will buy anything. They can afford to since they only pay a few cents per book and charge exorbitant prices. The upside is that you can sometimes find offbeat books that other places might overlook. They usually have a good selection of newer SF titles, but like any used book store, it can vary wildly.

This shop is a must for West Islanders. It features a healthy selection of science fiction, fantasy and horror. The books are obviously bought with a discerning eye as most of the books are of recent vintage and high quality. The prices are reasonable and there is plenty of choice. What more could you ask? They even have a frequent-buyer program: buy $50 of books and get $5 of books free.

Their SF section is first rate. There are plenty of classics and obscure titles. Not much new stuff, but if you want new stuff you can go to Chapters. Prices are good.

This Montreal institution has shuttered its Bishop St. store and now can only be found on Metcalfe St., near McgGill University. The prices remain good, but the science fiction shelves have been reduced in favour of more mystery novels.

There are little if any English books on SF, but plenty to chose from in the French section. But be cautioned that this place was very cramped, and filled with people, so you're always bumping someone. l'Échange Mt-Royal and l'Échange St-Denis are totally separate entities. From my experience, Mt-Royal has a bigger Scifi collection, albeit mixed in with the Fantasy stuff, (and it overflows on surrounding shelves these days), the little English mixed with the French... Yeah, little English, and bound to a few either timelessly mainstream authors, or more actual, commercially viable titles (which ain't always a bad thing...)

COSMIC - l'Échange on St-Denis was very small but not as cramped as the one on Mt-Royal. The prices were cheaper, and they had a full bookcase reserved for English books. The picking for SF&F was slim, but I still managed to walk away with 3 titles. NICOLAS Q. - In my experience, l'Échange on St-Denis is a no go for English Sci-fi, while their French section is pretty small. For comics, or "bandes dessinées", St-Denis has the upper hand, as well as a larger selection. ROSEMARIE - Good selection of CDs mostly, two shelves of comics, and a lot of French books, SF in English is sparse with a few titles here and there. Recommended for French books, and CDs.

COSMIC - The collection of SF&F is at a minimal in the English section, there is simply an English reserved bookcase seperated by authors, there you will find mostly the classics (Stevenson, Wells, Swift, Poe, etc.) at very good prices. But there is a decent collection of French books on the subject, although I have always hated the fact that French books go for more than twice the price of an english book of the same size. One of the owners of the store wrote in to add these comments: "Ceci est un message de la Librairie Mona Lisait. J'ai lu ce que vous dites de nos livres de SF anglais. Je pense que vous n'avez pas vu le rayon de SF anglais qui est séparé du rayon Fiction anglais Il se trouve près du rayon SF français et n'est pas très visible! Au plaisir de vous revoir!!"

With a name like Mars, you'd think this was a good spot to load up on science fiction books. Actually, the store is a joke. The owner is a pack rat who stocks his firetrap of a store with mounds of books, magazines, records, posters and all sorts of crap. To be visited at your own risk.

I wasn't sure how this place would turn out, it has a French name, it's bit cramped, but filled to the rim with books. I have to admit I was quite surprised at the amount of English SF books they have which is about 4 (x) seven feet tall Bookcases (x) 9 shelves each (x) appr 30 books each (=) about 1080 SF books with an impressive variety of authors. And this not counting the cheap book boxes on the floor. I was also surprised at the prices, compared with downtown, this place beats them by about a 50c to a dollar per book, well worth the time to go to. The books are separated by category and authors and they even have special sections for Star Trek, Books made into movies, Television shows, etc.

The Salvation Army is the place to go for cheap books. Unfortunately, they are totally unsorted and the science fiction selection is minimal. Still, it's a great place to browse for musty, old paperbacks. The downtown location has an immense number of books for sale at the ridiculous price of 50 cents. The Salvation Army operates a number of other thrift stores across the island.

Westcott's science fiction selection is small, but it's good. I've found plenty of older anthologies here, but I've noticed that the SF section seems to be getting smaller. I don't know if he's buying many new books these days.

They have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of books of all genres. E-Bayers line up outside the door just before opening time to get in there and pick through the bins, but you still find some gems. Lots of science fiction and often really cool old craft books from the bygone days of crochet and puppets.

This store has a decent stock of SF title, mostly recent stuff. Look for cheaper and older stuff in the back. They also sell comics and have the attraction of not charging taxes on their books, including new titles.
