The Evolution of Sex: Rethinking the Y Chromosome
March 27, 2007
Lecture
with David Page, PhD, director, Whitehead Institute; department of biology, MIT; Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator . This presentation is part of the ongoing series Whitehead Institute Lecture Series.

Over the last few decades, the male-specific Y chromosome, the runt of the genomic litter, has been diagnosed as terminally ill. Some scientists declared that in another 10 million years or so the Y will be gone altogether, taking males along with it. However, Dr. Page and his colleagues have found that the Y has a unique and astonishing capacity to repair itself. Learn about their research as they continue to analyze the Y chromosomes of humans and other species, gaining deeper insights into the Y's architectural beauty, evolutionary dynamism, and critical role in male fertility.

This is the third event in The House that Darwin Built series.

Darwin's theory of natural selection has transformed our understanding of the living world, down to the smallest molecules. Today, scientists use these theories to understand a host of complex biological problems. Join us to learn how evolution drives our understanding of human disease and development.

Free reception to follow.

Fee: Free

This program is free and open to the public. Tickets will be available at the registration table in the Museum lobby beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the night of the lecture. Seating is limited, first come, first served.

Cameron Jamie retrospective Opening. Sat, May 5, 2007. 7-9pm

The exhibition presents works ranging from drawings to sculptural objects to films created over the past 20 years, including examples of investigation around the notion of portraiture, self-representation, and collective identity, many of which have never been shown together. Also featured is the artist's acclaimed film trilogy (BB, Spook House, and Kranky Klaus) along with selections from his photographic studies, ephemera, and archival material collected during the production of the films. Cameron Jamie, the first U.S. solo museum exhibition featuring the work of the artist, was originally organized by Philippe Vergne, deputy director and chief curator at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, in close collaboration with the artist, Cameron Jamie.

superDraw and Morgan Packard. April 30, 2007. 9pm-1am

        Admission 21 plus, Free

superDraw takes live video manipulation to new territory by returning to basics...drawing. The visceral act of sliding a pen across a computer drawing pad suddenly opens up a world of animated possibilities. Audiences see the direct correlation between drawing and generating amazing visuals, in real-time to the live electronic music being generated by Morgan Packard.

Morgan Packard has numerous albums under his belt. From bouncy dance floor music to abstract compositions commissioned by dance troupes, Morgan Packard is a very well respected electronic sound master craftsman. He often starts with natural sounds, and then manipulates them beyond recognition to create songs that are as natural and organic as they are electronic. Having performed together for many years, he and superDraw compliment to each other perfectly with sound and visuals.

Residents DJ Flack and DJ C will also be spinning experimental party music from their laptops.

UPDATE: I tried to go to this during the art festival. Unfortunately, the gallery was having a PRIVATE EVENT and I couldn't go in. Incredibly lame. I was so annoyed!

Three recent interactive drawing installations by Camille Utterback, Untitled 5 (2004), Untitled 6 (2005), and Alluvial (2007), invite playful interaction using a mirroring device that allows visitors to recognize an abstract representation of their own movements within a projected picture plane. The algorithms required to successfully render the desired effects are anything but simple. Utterback’s flawlessly designed interfaces do not allow the technology to overshadow the aesthetic quality and content of the work. By limiting the scope of each project to a finite range of exceedingly well-structured parameters, the artist ensures that her installations are easily accessible, revealing their complexities over time. Curated by Lisa Dorin, the Art Institute of Chicago.
Tags: drawing, fun, exhibit, interactive, cyberarts festival

Map this on Platial
Perky Pat Layouts is a multimedia performance art piece, which combines elements of free improvisation, distributed composition, dance, performance art and live video manipulation. Exploring themes of human isolation, cybernetic intelligence and the fluidity of reality, Perky Pat Layouts traces the voyage of the first Martian settlers to their new home and the life they find there.
Tags: fun, hang out, installation, screening, boston cyberarts festival, so close to home

Map this on Platial
I probably won't make it to this, because my friend Derrick Rossi is going to be in town from San Francisco.

Just as I suspected, I did not go to this. We went out to dinner aith Derrick and some friends and then sat around my living room drinking gin and tonic until 2 in the morning.

IMAX Wild Chimpanzees @ 4PM, August 31, 2007 (last showing!)

I am just a loser for missing this.

**********

In 1960, at the age of 26, Jane Goodall entered the wilderness of Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park to begin her research on chimpanzees. The mission was more difficult than she could have imagined. The terrain was rough, the animals evaded her with frustrating ease, and what sparse knowledge existed of wild chimpanzees offered little insight.

Many researchers perceived chimpanzees as primitive, simple creatures, but Jane saw something else altogether. The animals she observed displayed high intelligence, emotional responses, and complex social behavior. In fact, Goodall found striking similarities between chimpanzee and human behavior. In everything from warfare to parenting, facial expressions to displays of affection, the two species appeared to be closely related.

Watching the Gombe chimp clan interact at close range in Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees, it's hard to deny the connection. Poignant footage captures the great apes in their natural environment: playing games to pass the time, fighting with family members, vying for attention, and lounging in the grass on a hot summer day. Surprisingly humanlike, their mannerisms and interactions are so familiar as to be remarkable.

This film recounts the story of Goodall's inspirational journey, from those first months of doubt and struggle to the breakthroughs that placed her among the luminaries of modern science. Informed by an open mind and years of close study, Goodall's work redefined human understanding of chimpanzees and, ultimately, of mankind itself.

Map this on Platial

Sept 9, 2007. 5:30 or 7:30. Fallen Angels and Hanna Takes the Stairs @ the Brattle

        New 35mm Print!
Fallen Angels at 5:30, 7:30 Buy Tickets
(1995) dir Wong Kar Wai w/Leon Lai, Michelle Reis, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Charlie Yeung [96 min]

One of Wong Kar-Wai’s most purely enjoyable films, FALLEN ANGELS follows Leon Lai as a cool-as-ice hit man who receives his faxed assignments from his agent, Michelle Reis. When the agent isn’t planning the killer’s next hit she's cleaning his apartment or rolling around fantasizing about him even though the two never meet. The genre aspects take a back seat to Chris Doyle’s fantastic camera work and the amusing subplot surrounding Takeshi Kaneshiro as a mute who breaks into closed lunch stands and forces passersby to be his patrons.

Area Premiere!
Hannah Takes The Stairs at 9:30 Buy Tickets
(2007) dir Joe Swanberg w/Greta Gerwig, Kent Osborne, Andrew Bujalski, Ry Russo-Young, Mark Duplass, Todd Rohal, Tipper Newton [84 min]

The much-touted new wave of independent filmmaking continues with this outstanding, intimate romantic comedy. The alluring Greta Gerwig stars as the precocious Hannah, a fresh college graduate who falls for one, and then the other, of a pair of friends at a Chicago company where she is interning. HANNAH sports all of the hallmarks of the so-called “Mumblecore” movement: wry dialogue, improvised performances, a frank depiction of modern relationships and a wistful realism. Something of a romantic shaggy-dog story HANNAH is episodic, rambling and funny as it follows Hannah on her quest to end her ‘chronic dissatisfaction’ and find a boyfriend worthy of her.

✓ Boredoms concert with Birgit and Sam July 7, 2007, 4pm

        Update:
I went to this, but the line was so slow and long that I didn't want to wait in it with Vigo, so I took him down to the river to get ice cream. I missed my opprtunity to get in with Erik and Birgit and Sam, and took Vigo for a long walk down to the beach at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. The pool was closed due to infant feces (gross) but we had a nice time hanging out on the sand. When we came back, the show was still going on so we listened outside for a while and then went to get some sushi and wait for the rest of our gang.

I think Vigo would have enjoyed the show and I'm disappointed that I missed it.

Dave Alpert, Jan 17, 2007. (didn't go)

         I'm a loser.

Didn't make it out of the house. But I did get a nice night of sleep.

I like Dave a lot and I still have never been to hear him or his band play. He also used to be in a band with my landlord, Tim. All the more reason to go check it out. (Dave's Blog)

His invitation reads:
It’s going to be COLD outside. Come in out of the cold and hang out at the Abbey Lounge pub tomorrow after work (7pm). I’m playing a free 21+ solo show. Hope to catch you there.
A vital new framework for invention is arising. Worlds created for movies spring from real-world science research, and in turn, science and what is built in the real world are influenced by the movies.

John Underkoffler has been at the heart of this feedback loop with the human-machine interfaces he's devised over the past two decades — first at the MIT Media Lab, then as science and technology advisor to motion pictures, and currently as developer of the world's first commercial gestural interface. He and his company are creating a glove that is faster and more logical than a mouse and keyboard, which will give new meaning to the phrase "point and click."

This behind-the-scenes look at technology in the entertainment industry is an activity of EurekaFest, a celebration of the inventive spirit produced by the Lemelson-MIT Program from May 2-5, 2007.
A free reception will follow the program.
with Wagner James Au, embedded journalist in Second Life; Pathfinder Linden, community manager for Linden Lab; John (Craig) Freeman, artist in Second Life; moderated by Eric Gordon, assistant professor of new media, Emerson College. This presentation is part of the ongoing series When Science Meets Art.

Called "the biggest digital art installation in the world" by Warren Ellis, Second Life is a highly imaginative, online, 3-D rendered environment populated with avatars (graphic representations of people). In Second Life, you can teleport, fly, live in a house, go to clubs, take classes, make and view art, or just "hang out." Spanning more than 42,000 acres in real-world scale — larger than metropolitan Boston— Second Life is second home to over 2 million "residents," many of whom collaboratively create its content. It is a place where real business is conducted with virtual dollars that can be exchanged for real-world currency.

Join us during the Boston Cyberarts Festival for a discussion about the creative, social and economic implications of Second Life. Book signing to follow.

This event is free thanks to the generosity of the Lowell Institute. Seating is limited. Free seating tickets are available to the general public in the Museum lobby beginning at 5:45 p.m. the evening of the program. First come, first served.

We are at a crossroads. The latest scientific discoveries give us the ability to manipulate life, but does this mean that we should? And, when genetic materials are gathered from rain forests and oceans, who should reap the financial benefits? In a program that is part panel discussion, part forum conversation, we invite you to explore the promise and the danger of using science to alter evolution.

In what Larry King labeled "one of the most important films ever," Al Gore makes an engaging and passionate argument that global warming be viewed as a moral dilemma rather than as a political issue. In the film, Gore outlines the effects of global warming on natural environments, plant and animal life, and weather phenomena that have resulted in what he calls a "planetary emergency."

        Update

I didn't make it to this. I had to pick Vigo up at school at 2:30 and just couldn't swing it. Too bad. It sounded great.

*******

1) Welcome Chamindra de Silva and 2 members of his Sahana team to Boston,
all the way from Sri Lanka. They'll talk about their Free and Open
Software Disaster Management System, inspired by the 2004 Asian Tsunami.
Their system has progressed tremendously since 2004, and is currently in
use in several countries, including Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka:

http://www.sahana.lk/overview
http://www.linux.lk/~chamindra

We'll be particularly interested in how Sahana's integration with
Google Maps might be enhanced to support more resilient offline access :)

Chamindra personally would love to meet Boston locals interested in
open source for NGOs EG. balancing true information security/privacy,
better maps, and data sharing with on-the-ground realities...

Particularly as disaster response matures, the challenge is
protecting data in networks of trust (sometimes bound by legal
agreements between relief agencies, government and spontaneous
volunteers). The implication of wrong data in wrong hands, or at
the wrong time, during disaster response can result in things like
panic, identity theft and even have implications on national security.

In summary, Chamindra and his team would love to meet you, and hope
you'll share any thoughtful ideas on how Sahana might evolve new
solutions, promoting adoption among larger NGOs and Government,
giving them more confidence in their ability to share data, in turn
improving timely relief to victims!

2) Allan Doyle of http://museum.mit.edu/mwow has made tremendous progress
with the MIT Museum project's demo Nokia 770 handheld over the last
few months, providing a self-guided walking tour of MIT's core,
where you can choose from nearby polished videos to watch along your
way, based on Wifi-tracking of your location. Allan can talk about his
recent presentation explaining this, at the SXSW conference in Texas,
possibly to be followed by a more formal presentation early this spring ;)

Map this on Platial
they bubble up from our subconscious desires and

         I'm a loser.

Didn't make it out of the house. But I did get a nice night of sleep.

I don't go out to see enough of Cleve's gigs, and he works so much that is pretty much the best time to see him. Maybe I can see Dave and Cleve on the same night.

Cleve's email read:
After years of vinyl archeology in the bazaars of India, Br. Cleve has morphed into his alter-ego DJ Sharaabi Kapoor, and, at Redline on January 17th, will be presenting the dopest, deepest sitar beat tracks from some of the wildest movies ever made.

This Wednesday is the official launch party for DJ Deano Sounds "Mood Mosaic" party, to be held each and every Wednesday night at Redline. Come weekly for your dose of Northern Soul, rare groove, deep funk, jazz dancing, acid jazz, dub, reggae, brasilica, soundtracks, and much more. It's a pleasure to have been invited to be the Guest DJ for this opening night.

Music starts at 9pm, and there's no cover charge.
Tags: cleve, dj, dance, hang out, see old friends

Map this on Platial
Didn't make it out of the house. I just didn't feel in the mood for it and too lazy for the bus ride/subway ride/bus ride out to the ica.

They may not have tickets anymore. I've seen it before, but never in a proper setting. It's pretty gruelling, but could be fun, too.

Tickets: $9 general admission; $7 members, seniors, and students

The climax of Barney’s six-and-a-half-hour cycle of lush, allegorical imagery. Tickets go on sale week of December 10.

Elizabeth Streb has thrilled audiences with her choreography for the past two decades. With her latest work, STREB vs. GRAVITY, she challenges gravity as her dancers leap, spin, and fly. Gasp as they leap from impossible heights, thrill as they dodge flying cement blocks, and feel your heart in your throat as they spin around and around. They dance—youll sweat.

Tickets: $30.

It would have been greast to see this, but it's pretty hard to get out on a week night, and the 25th was my birthday. I had a drink with friends rather than going to the movie.

Show times 5:30, 7:30, 9:30

Screens with A CHRIS MARKER BESTIARY, recent short films by Marker featuring animals both large and small.

In the same vein as Agnes Varda's The Gleaners And I, Chris Marker's THE CASE OF THE GRINNING CAT, begins with simple curiosity, in this case, the urge to investigate some intriguing graffiti, and ends with an engaging socio-political exploration. The French documentarian and cinema-essayist reflects on politics, art and culture at the start of the new millennium. In November 2001, Marker became intrigued, as did many other Parisians, by the sudden appearance of alluring portraits of grinning yellow cats on various public surfaces. Marker's cinematic efforts to document the mysterious materializations of this charming feline throughout Paris are a recurring theme of GRINNING CAT.

This record of Marker's cinematic peregrinations throughout the city - visually energized by his free-association montage style - chronicles strikes, demonstrations, memorials, election campaigns, celebrity scandals, international political incidents, and a seemingly endless variety of political protests. The personalized commentary running throughout GRINNING CAT offers the simultaneously learned and witty reflections of the filmmaker, now in his early eighties, on both the contemporary and historical implications of these varied events and personalities. And, as the mysterious cats begin to appear amidst the banners and signs in political demonstrations, Marker concludes the film with thoughts on the vital importance of such expressions of imagination in our public lives, echoing the May ‘68 slogan that "La poésie est dans la rue" ("Poetry is in the street").

Thursday, March 13, 6:00 pm Maternal-Fetal Conflicts in Human Pregnancy lecture

Pregnancy is the most intimate of human relationships and, just like any other relationship, there is potential for both cooperation and conflict. In this lecture, Dr. Haig, Professor of Biology at Harvard, will discuss the various genetic conflicts that transpire within the human womb, and visit the assumption that what's good for the mother is also good for the fetus. Haig will consider evolutionary conflicts over the amount of maternal blood flowing to the placenta, and use this perspective to consider the causes of preeclampsia. Part of the Evolution Matters lecture series. Free and open to the public at 24 Oxford Street in the Geological Lecture Hall.
Tags: lecture, natural science

Map this on Platial
