The Hawthorne Hostel Guide To Portland

There's all kinds of crazy, neat stuff to see, do and eat in Portland -- but casual visitors miss a lot of it.

So here's a sampling of what Portland has to offer, from the staff at the Portland Hawthorne Hostel to our guests, potential guests, and the community too. Here you can find out about attractions and amenities in our neighborhood, as well as the stuff that makes Portland awesome and unique.

Find Out:
• Where to go for breakfast, dinner, a night out, or to get out of the rain
• How to get to the hostel from the airport, Greyhound or Amtrak, and how to get back again
ª Cool parks and weird museums
• Portland likes to shop in bulk. Buy second-hand clothes by the pound at The Bins, explore one of the country's largest video stores at Movie Madness (which doubles as a museum of film props and costumes), and check out the country's biggest independent book store, Powell's City of Books
• Plus photos of strange Portland bands and events, like the Urban Iditarod, zombie walks, and giant pillow fights

Portland Hawthorne Hostel

There's nowhere in Portland that's more laid-back and quirky than Southeast. The Portland Hawthorne Hostel is in the middle of Southeast -- and there's nowhere you can stay in Portland thats more laid back and quirky than the Hawthorne Hostel.

The Hostel

The Hawthorne Hostel is a Victorian house built in 1909. Inside, you'll find that the walls are painted all different colors, there's mosaics on the fireplace in the dining room, and it's all topped off with an ecoroof, a roof covered in soil and plants to make the building more sustainable, on the second floor.

Downstairs is the men's dorm and a coed dorm. The kitchen, dining room and office are on the ground floor with a large porch out front and an enclosed back porch with laundry facilities, lockers and bike rentals. The private rooms are on the third floor, and a room that serves as an extra coed dorm in the summer, and an extra private room in the winter. We're part of Hostelling International, a global non-profit organization that makes sure its hostels follow business and cleanliness standards.

We throw a variety of events for visitors and the community, especially during the summer. We have a community potluck brunch every Sunday, and summer brings weekly Open Mic Nights in our yard, outdoor and 'bike in' movies.

We also feature:

24 hour access, no lock-out or curfew

Free wireless internet and a high speed internet kiosk

Free local courtesy phone; phone cards available for purchase

Free parking

Free bagels, gourmet bread and pastries

$1 DIY pancake breakfast

Coffee and tea

Discount bicycle rentals onsite

Lockers and laundry facilities

Our Neighborhood

The Hawthorne Hostel is located on Hawthorne Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood, in the heart of Southeast Portland. Lonely Planet calls Hawthorne one of Portland's most youthful and dynamic neighborhoods, and with good reason. In less than ten minutes you can walk to dozens of coffeehouses, pubs, thrift stores, alternative and hippie boutique stores, ethnic and vegetarian restaurants and cafés, organic grocery stores, plus several discount movie houses, a Zen meditation center, and lots of eccentric attractions. We're also only a 15-minute bus ride from downtown Portland.

Map this on Platial
Staff Picks
"You have to see The Back Stage to believe it. Literally the backstage of the Bagdad Theater, behind the movie screen, turned into a pub and pool hall with the same Middle Eastern theme as the rest of the Bagdad. The ceiling is seven stories above your head, through the theater's old catwalk system. There's a 20 foot by 20 foot mural on the wall that shows the space's history, from when it was a behind-the-scenes area of a vaudeville theatre in the '30s to when it was an arthouse and hippie haven in the '70s. When most people walk into The Back Stage for the first time, they seem to have trouble believing their eyes. All this, plus drinks and a jukebox with everything from Johnny Cash to Modest Mouse to Tom Waits!" - Brandon

Map this on Platial
Probably the best second-run movie theater in Portland, the Laurelhurst features four screens. You can buy microbrews, wine, Pizzicato pizza, in one of the first art deco buildings in the U.S., dating back to 1923. It's about a 15 minute walk north from the Hostel.

Map this on Platial

No Fish! Go Fish! and Strip Jeopardy

No Fish! Go Fish! is an odd little restaurant whose specialty is sandwiches in the shape of fish, containing no fish-derived products (hence, "no fish").

HOWEVER, the real appeal of No Fish! Go Fish! is the unique event they hold every Friday night: Strip Jeopardy.

Strip Jeopardy is just like real Jeopardy: Three contestants who must answer in the form of a question, a host, an audience. But in strip jeopardy, if a contestant answers a question wrong, they have to remove an article of clothing. If they fail to answer in the form of a question, they lose another article of clothing. Get a daily double, and answer right? The contestant can choose one of their competitors, who must then lose a garment. And there are also situations where the host takes off clothes, or audience members too.

Strip Jeopardy starts at 10 p.m. every Friday night. And yes, people get naked. One of our hostel staff lost early when he played, and ended up sitting in front of the restaurant wearing nothing but a funny hat for 40 minutes.

Map this on Platial

Avalon Theatre and Nickel Arcade

Staff Picks: Best Place to Get Out of the Rain
"Cheap movies, plus a huge arcade with lots of games. Good for all ages." - Kate

The Avalon Theatre has two screens of mostly family-themed movies, and a Nickel Arcade. Movies range from $2.50 to $5 for adults, depending on whether they're starred attractions or not.

The Nickel Arcade is fun, but deceptive. The machines only take nickels... but that doesn't mean they only cost a nickel to play! Most of the machines are only slightly less expensive than games in a normal arcade. Caveat emptor!

Map this on Platial
Your first time in Movie Madness, you WILL get lost.

Movie Madness bills itself as "the best independent video store in the world," and we're inclined to believe them. More than 50,000 DVDs and video tapes, with vast selections of foreign and independent films.

It also doubles as a museum, with props and costumes from famous movies on display. Knives from Psycho and Scream, the head of one of the aliens from Aliens, and costumes worn by Jodie Foster, Julie Andrews, Drew Barrymore, and Mike Myers in movies like The Sound of Music and Austin Powers.

Map this on Platial

The "Bins", the thiftiest thrift store you'll ever find

There's something about Portland and shopping in bulk. When we go shopping, we want ALL of our options, right there in front of us. You can see it at Powell's City of Books downtown, in video form at Movie Madness, and as a thrift store at The Bins.

At The Bins (as people in Portland call the Goodwill Outlet Store), you pay $1.50 per pound of clothing you buy, and you make your selections by digging through big blue plastic bins full of unsorted clothing. The bins are on wheels, and every so often one of the old bins gets pulled out and a new one gets wheeled in from elsewhere in the building. If you're patient, you can discover some incredible things... or a whole bunch of crap, depending on the day.

Map this on Platial

The Montage

Located under the Morrison Bridge, the Montage is a late-night dining experience. You may love it or you may hate it, but you aren't likely to be ambivalent about it.

Here's Brandon's first experience with the Montage:

"I was taken aback by how classy and fancy it looked when I walked in. Then one of the cooks bellowed 'WHAAAAAAZUUUUUP!' because he saw new people in the restaurant.

"And then I looked down, and saw bits of paper all over the floor. All of the day's bills, scattered all over the floor.

"And then there was the fact that, when we ordered the Green Eggs and Spam, they made it using 17 eggs, for no apparent reason. As the waiter delivered it, he knocked my water glass into my lap, which it fell out of and shattered without getting anything more than my knees wet.

"The waiter was also wearing shorts, and had patches all over his apron -- like, patches in the shape of flowers or something.

"When we left, the staff wrapped the leftovers into a doggy bag in the shape of a squirrel made of tinfoil.

"I will, from henceforth, be bringing EVERYONE who comes to visit me in Portland to Montage."

Map this on Platial
"Forest Park is the largest urban forest in the U.S. It's like the forest moon of Endor. But my favorite part is the "Witches Castle," a ruined stone building along the trail. It's a stone restroom from the '30s that was damaged in a storm in the 60s. It's absolutely gorgeous." - Brandon

Forest Park stretches for more than eight miles, and the walking path in it is a 40 mile loop. The #15 bus from Belmont will drop you off near the Lower Macleay Park entrance, where these photos were taken.

To get to the Witches Castle (also called the Stone House), walk the Lower Macleay Park trail for 20 minutes. The "Castle" is on your left, at a juncture with another trail.

Map this on Platial

Velveteria: The Velvet Painting Museum

A visit to Dot's or Red Light got you interested in the fine art of kitsch velvet paintings? Velveteria is an entire museum devoted to them.

"Velvet painting is the Rodney Dangerfield of art. It's the stuff nobody wanted like a red headed step-child. But that's wrong. Velvet painting is technically difficult and requires different skills than ordinary painting. Our pieces range from fine art to 'Oh my God, what were they thinking?' With over 170 painting on display, there is something for everyone.

"Velveteria takes one through the South Sea islands to a lair of beautiful ladies to the Wall of Fame where the classics of velvet are found. Dogs playing poker, Elvis, Banditos and clowns. Plus, we have rotating shows, like the story of Jesus and Mary on velvet, during April for Easter. Velvet painting captures pathos and whimsy in a frame.
Mt. Tabor Park

Staff Picks: Favorite Place to be Outdoors
"Take the trails, not the roads, to the top. Great view of Mt. Hood. Check out the wonderful reservoirs, the volcanic cutaway (beside the basketball courts), and on a clear day you can see Mt. St. Helens. A perfect place for sunrise and sunset." - Drew

Mt. Tabor, the hill you can see up Hawthorne from the Hostel, is an extinct volcano and a great park for walks, scenic views, and riding your bike or longboard down from the top.

In the park you'll find basketball and tennis courts, a playground, a cut-away of the hill showing the volcanic rock it's composed of and the soil on top, as well as three of Portland's reservoirs. The reservoirs were built between 1894 and 1911, and their battlements and stonework give the area sort of a medieval feel.

Portland didn't discover that Tabor was a volcano until after they'd already turned it into a park, and they used cinders from the volcano to pave the park's roads. Tabor makes Portland one of only two cities in the continental U.S. to contain an extinct volcano. (The other one, Bend, is also here in Oregon.)

Map this on Platial

Rimsky-Korsakoffee House

        Staff Picks: Favorite Coffee Shop
"A funky eccentric evening coffee and dessert spot with live instrumental music. Check out the rotating tables, the underwater bathroom and the ohhh sooo bizarre atmosphere. A little like Grandma's house on psychedelics." - Drew

Rimsky-Korsakoffee is located in an old Victorian house. The only sign is tiny and right over the door, so it's easiest to find by its street number.

It's the sort of coffeehouse where you have a waiter and you get a bill at the end, rather than one where you order at the counter. There's origami and random objects hanging from the ceiling on string, and 'guestbooks' you can write in on the tables. And some of the tables, they do things you don't quite expect... There's live classical music most nights, a piano or a harp or a classic guitar. The bathroom upstairs is decorated to look like you're underwater, and it's one of a bunch of doors in a hallway with hats dangling from the ceiling. The other doors say things like, "No, not this door," and "You really better not to try to go through this door."

Needless to say, it's quite a strange, unique place.

On Friday and Saturday there's a $3 minimum per person, and there's a $1+ tip encouraged for the musician.

Map this on Platial
"I can't help it -- I have always loved the Cup & Saucer and their World Famous Veggie Scramble. Nothing quite as filling -- especially if you are heading out in the cold and wet." - Talbot

The Cup & Saucer is a trendy chain of local cafés, with locations of SE Hawthorne, NE Killingsworth and N Denver. If you're coming on a weekend in the morning or early afternoon, it might take a little while to get seated. In the summer there's a line waiting outside -- it's a popular place, and also good for people watching!

Map this on Platial

Portland Memorial Mausoleum

Staff Picks: Favorite Place to Get Out of the Rain
"Nothing quite like wandering around an eight story mausoleum on a rainy day. Yes, I know I'm morbid. It's still neat, and impressive." - Brandon

The Portland Memorial Mausoleum covers two and a half city blocks, and holds 58,000 bodies, with room for 120,000 more.

Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) describes it as a cross between Dracula's castle and Nordstorms, and one of his books is set here.

Map this on Platial
