Randy's

A squadron of large model airplanes hangs from the rafters; the decor's a garish orange and purple mishmash. The food is solid, hits-the-spot greasy spoon fare. The place is a longtime hangout for various aviation types (Boeing is just down the road) as well as traveling truckers and graveyard shifters, who gather to share their stories--both boring and rivetingly bizarre. A late night at Randy's is best described as a cross between the banality of a Hopper painting and the slashed-eyeball surrealism of a Buñuel film. As far as traditional doughnut places go (i.e. not Krispy Kreme), Colonial is pretty good - even down to the bad coffee. Their selection is good, their doughnuts are good, and their prices are good. What makes Colonial really special, however, is the fact that they''re open 24 hours a day, something surprisingly rare in Oakland. At all hours, Las Vegas' youngest and coolest crowd is holding court at this diner. The hip attitude attracts them, and the classy un-coffee-shop-like food keeps them there. Inside, keg pumps are fashioned as fire hydrants; pretzels come in dog dishes; and the walls are covered in canine paraphernalia. Open 24 hours. Diner on the ground floor, Hooka bar on the top floor. The place is decorated with fun, funky art on the walls, and the tables each have a theme. Ours had cutouts of old cigarette ads, which kept us entertained. Another neat feature of Caf 360 is that they'll lend you a Sony PSP to play with while you're there. All they ask of you is your driver's license so you don't run off with the thing. They have nine games from which to choose.

Open until 4AM. Kitchen closes 3AM. The weekend crowd at Cahoots runs from an impressive turnout of off-duty musicians and their hangers-on to a wall-to-wall thicket of every kind of Louisville resident on record. On such evenings, once you flash your ID at the door, you run smack into a snaking line of patrons negotiating the narrow hall on the right that leads from the front bar past the restrooms, cigarette machine and ATM. This opens up to the larger rear bar with booths, pool tables and even more people. (VelocityWeekly)

Map this on Platial
Officially open until 4 or 5, but sometimes later. People have flocked to this neighborhood joint since 1941, and although it's been under new ownership since 2001, the same black and white decor, chrome accents and pierced, tattooed and disaffected staff remains. Personalities blend in this small diner, from teenagers to daily regulars. Belly up to the counter if you don't feel like waiting for a table on the weekends when it gets packed. There is seating at the bar, around 10 tables, and several leather couches situated in the back. There are high ceilings and unique lighing. This will be a venue for live music and other performances. The flyer also says they have nightly live music. One entire side of Lola has windows facing 15th street, and it's a quick jaunt over from the 16th street mall.
Denver Diner

Denver's number one option for late night downtown eats. Everyone knows the Diner. Slightly scarred, a little bit like a Howard Johnson's on a Kansas highway, the Diner packs in the drunks, the college students, even the movers-n-shakers. The food is typically greasy, but the menu is big enough and the servers are amazingly gracious, considering the quantity and relative quality of the patrons. You try slopping hash browns to soused club kids at 3 in the morning on Wednesday and see if you can still get it up for a smile. Betcha can't. Like an open market in a bustling Middle Eastern capital, Jerusalem offers myriad options for the ravished bar-closer. The best greasy spoon diner in Denver. The late night crowd is a melange of Denver's party people and miscreants. The food is reasonably priced and tastes great going down. Good burgers and shakes (a staple of any late night diner soiree). If you're in the mood to go Greek, the gyros are the best in Denver---a jaw can only open so wide and these gyros test the limit. There's souvlaki, which is like gyro, but with chunks of marinated pork instead of gyro meat (awesome), and then there's the chicken kabobs (which rule).

Map this on Platial

George Webb Restaurant

Burgers are good and cardboard thin, but best when stacked and slathered with cheese and fried onions. For something different, try the Super George with Thousand Island dressing. Skip fries in favor of fried potato wedges with peels still in place. For breakfast, eggs rule, especially over-easy with sides of crisp hash browns to soak up the yolks. Unlike many greasy spoons, Webb's makes eggs in frying pans rather than on the grill for a more delicate, buttery taste. Don't miss the chili--it's thinner than most, with beans, meat and broken spaghetti noodles.

2214 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI

Since 1947, this has been one of Milwaukee's favorites for traditional coffee-shop cooking. Open 24 hours, seven days a week, there's always an interesting crowd--especially after the bars close down. A fire burned down the original Ma Fischer's, but the re-built place opened in the summer of 2003. It's now larger, with a distinctly separated smoking section.

Cheesy menu, great food. Open 24 hours.

It's not exactly cheap, but it is on the set of a small film studio so you're likely to run into all sorts of interesting types, including the waitresses. The menu's simple -- breakfast foods, sandwiches, and a small selection of entrees. The shakes and malts are where it's at for drinks, and I personally recommend the Sloppy Bob.

The atmosphere's kind of reminiscient of the bastard child of Denny's and Planet Hollywood, come to think of it.

But it's a great place to take yourself and some friends if you're starving in the wee hours of the morning.

Map this on Platial
