Acropolis (Gr. akron, edge, polis, city), literally the edge of a town.
Manufacturer's Trust Co.

"...The bank is a glass box, minimally interrupted by thin, metal-covered mullions. The curtain wall is made of clear glass because heat-resistant glass did not exist then in the sizes needed....The panes are the largest used up to that time—10 feet wide, 22 feet high, and a half-inch thick, each weighing 1,500 pounds. The cantilevered second floor of the exterior wall, which therefore looks as if it encloses one 40-foot-high space. Planting boxes form a protective parapet at the edge of the cantilevered floor. The 13,000 square feet of glass are set into rectangular polished aluminum mullions of a small cross section made possible because they and the glass wall hang in tension. The construction superintendent described this project as 'more like jewelry than building.'"

The Sydney Opera House is located at 33°51′25″S, 151°12′55″E in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the most distinctive and famous 20th century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world. Situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, with parkland to its south and close to the enormous Sydney Harbour Bridge, the building and its surroundings form an iconic Australian image. To some the spherical-sectioned shells are reminiscent of the flotilla of sailboats commonly cruising there. Tourists - mostly with little or no interest in opera - throng to the building in the thousands every week purely to see it.
Tags: australia, sydney, opera house, jorn utzon

Map this on Platial
While the bridge's style is unimpressive, driving on this stretch of freeway is an unforgetable experience. Better have plenty of gas, and if you even think you might have car trouble, don't attempt it. After a couple of miles, you start to ask yourself, will I ever see dry land again? The combined continuous length of this bridge including the 10-55 interchange is 181,157 feet. Really, the simple fact that New Orleans can be connected to the rest of the nation over "land" is an engineering marvel in and of itself.
Tags: bridges, structures, buildings

Map this on Platial
