Big Box Reuse

The WalMart moved into the Super WalMart half a mile up the road. The big box stood empty for a few years. No other retail stores would be given a lease for the building. What can a community do with an empty big box and a couple acres of parking lot? Check out the Places on this map to find out.

Most of these Places come from Julia Christensen'e Big Box project. If you know of a big box being reused for something in your community, add it to the map!

Sugar Creek School

Renovated K-Mart. The renovation of a big box building is a major undertaking. Although the buildings are easily adaptable, usually with fairly new electrical and structural elements, the fact of the matter remains: big box buildings are very, very big. The process of taking a roughly 100,000 square foot room, breaking it into several smaller room and hallways, and getting the building ready for a drastically different use is a major project that involves major money and time. Although there have been countless occasions upon which I have
thought, read, or even said out loud, "There is a church in Houston in a
renovated basketball stadium," it very honestly did not even begin to sink
in until I actually visited the place. Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas is
indeed in the abandoned Summit Stadium at Greenway Plaza, former home of the Rockets.

Map this on Platial

Granby Street Apartments

The Granby Street Apartments are located in a renovated Ames Department Store in Norfolk, VA. When Julia visited this building, she was under the impression that it was a renovated big box building, meaning a large, one-room, free-standing building. However, the Granby Street Apartments are a part of a downtown revitalization project that is happening in Norfolk, and the Ames Department store is actually an older building with many levels and many rooms.
Nelson County Justice Center

This building was the original inspiration for the entire project about renovated big box buildings. Although it is not actually a renovated big box itself, it is the building that sparked Julia's interest. The town courthouse in Bardstown, Kentucky, Julia's hometown, is sitting where a Wal-Mart building sat---once upon a time as a functioning Wal-Mart, then as a vacant building for many, many years. Wal-Mart built a Super Wal-Mart across town, and the structure at this location was abandoned. The RPM Indoor Raceway, most unfortunately, closed its doors recently. The fact that the raceway closed is quite remarkable actually. The renovation itself was wonderful, and the use for the space was fantastic. When you walked in the raceway, you could imagine yourself saying, "What would it be fun to do in a huge, empty Wal-Mart building?" Driving small cars around it really fast is pretty good answer.

When Wal-Mart abandoned the building across the street to build a Super Wal-Mart a quarter mile down the road, church-members kind of looked at each other and chuckled, thinking, "What if....?" Well, the idea shifted from a joking comment to an idea that actually made a lot of sense, and they made a bid. They found out that they were actually up against a much higher bidder, but this high bidder had various zoning stipulations built into their offer. As a result of this, the Calvary Chapel won out.
