Buddy, rocky, and james, our three twin cats, were found hours old with their mom under a house here in Tucson. Years later, I browsed through the website of a cat shelter just a few blocks away and found this picture of a male cat who is a dead ringer for buddy. The resemblance is astounding, down to the smallest markings on his face. Of course, the odds are slim to none that this cat is really any relation, but if you're out there, kitty-daddy, here's to you.

Booger Lives at Shakespeare and Co.

I don't know what he gets called nowadays, but I adopted this cat in 1996 from a fairly near suburb of Paris and named him Booger. He likes to get inside of a cardboard box with handle-holes in the sides and peer out until a hapless person walks by close enough. Then he reaches out his lightning paw, with claws out, and grabs your leg. About a year later, my roommate Tali and I were splitting up and leaving France for a while, so we needed to find a new home for Booger. Tali took Booger in a cardboard box to Shakespeare and Co. and sat outside looking for a nice person to adopt him. She tried to convince the actress who played Sue Ellen on Dallas, who was hanging out there that day, to adopt Booger, but in the end George took pity on the cat and let him stay there in the store. Booger loves living at Shakespeare and Company, and I think he also likes the fame and attention which goes along with being the housecat of one of the most famouse bookstores on the planet.

Every bookstore needs a cat and we are lucky enough to have one named Sirius Black, though he's generally known as Mister B. From his humble beginnings as a barn cat, Mr. B has quickly won the hearts of staff and customers alike with his larger than life personality. He's very social and enjoys meeting anyone who pays him compliments, offers to stroke him, or sits down to look at a book. Naturally he's also a great fan of napping - taking to his avocation with relish in the front windows, in his basket, and even on the computer. He's also quite curious and loves to get into shopping bags and baby strollers. Be sure to say hello to him when you stop in - and ask him about his infamous trip to Rutland. Mr. Murphy

Spring is here and that means the windows are opened during shop hours which Mr. Murphy loves. He has a cat friend (orange and white with a striped tail) who visits regularly and they exchange highlights of the day in cat talk. We have fresh catmint growing in our garden so we have brought some snippings in for Mr. Murphy's extreme enjoyment. A cat's life just can't get much better.

Somewhere on a lonely stretch of highway approaching tampa, I snapped this pic of my grandmother's cat, Smokey, riding shotgun on the dashboard and high on kittykat valium. Turns out I gave her a double dose (a whole pill, rather than a half) by accident, and her back legs didn't work right for the next few days. We were driving grandma's van from Maine to Florida, so having Smokey extra-chillaxed for the two days of driving really didn't hurt.

I moved about 2,200 miles across country, from Michigan to California, driving three and a half days with my dad and three cats in their own separate car carriers. Each day, I'd start the trip with catching the cats and getting them in the carriers. Two were scared enough they didn't put up much of a fight. The third put up a fight every time. Then I spent the next hour of the drive listening to them cry, and trying to calm down the most vocal by putting his carrier on my lap. Each night, I'd set up their food and a disposable litter box and let them out. They never went to the bathroom in their carriers. When we finally got to my new apartment, I opened their carriers in a bedroom and closed the door. I started unloading stuff, came back, and saw two of my cats in the same carrier. Ziggy, who is a very fat cat, managed to squeeze himself into the carrier with Stinky, an elderly, thin cat. They normally hate each other, but I guess they were both so upset and scared they needed some companionship. I guess oil and water mix if they've been agitated for three and a half days.

Merlin as a baby, far away

All three of my cats came from Michigan, where I have spent most of my adult life. Merlin, who will be 4 in August, was an accidental adoption. Meaning I had no intention of adopting another cat, but there were kitties to adopt at PetSmart, and Merlin wanted so badly to come home with me. The next thing I knew, I was filling out papers and calling my landlord to ask for permission to add a third cat. I brought this little waif home a day later, and my life hasn't been the same since. I called him Merlin because he used his magic to make me love him. And he hasn't stopped since. He was a problem child at first, and probably is still. But he still thinks he's a kitten (although he's probably about 13 pounds heavier than his svelte kitten days) and he keeps me laughing.

Morris the Cat(s)

There have been three different cats who have played the famed "Morris the Cat." The first Morris was adopted from a shelter in 1968. In 1969 he landed the role of Morris the Cat in the famous 9 Lives Cat Food commercials...and was an overnight success! The first Morris died in 1978 and was subsequently replaced by two more cats who played "Morris." All three of the "Morris the Cat" cats were rescued from shelters. Morris the cat has been the mascot of Heinz`s 9Lives pet food since 1968. He is credited with "writing" three books on cat care, Morris ran in the 1988 and 1992 presidential elections on the Finicky Party platform, campaigning for cats everywhere to enjoy a standard of nutrition — by eating 9Lives, of course.

I am not a cat person. However, one day I heard this tiny sound coming from a bush. I looked and saw a dirty, tiny kitty. She weighed less than a pound, had ear mites and stunk. I brought her home and made a poop box out of a cereal box filled with vermiculite. She got out the next day while I was at work. I came home and searched while crying. Then I heard a tiny meow. She had been shanghaied by our neighbor and left in their garage. I stormed over there set her free. She has lived with me for nearly ten years. I am a Shanghai person.

I found this interesting place looking for a picture of a tortoise shell cat to use to illustrate a story about a cat I used to have when I was a kid. This is from the site: Kiisu (aka Kiisu Miisu -- Kiisu simply means "kitten" in Estonian) is the senior cat at SwallowHill. Born probably about mid-June 1998 she is now (summer 2005) 7 years old. Indeed she is probably a year younger than Cleo. Nonetheless, she is the senior cat because she arrived here first and she trained both us and the dogs about how to live with cats and how wonderful they are. In the case of the dogs the education took about 3 months. In the beginning, the dogs considered her prey to be chased up trees or under chesterfields -- but eventually they learned and we learned too. I (Rod) always thought that cats were elegant, aloof strangers who would suavely stab you in the back while wearing elbow-length velvet gloves. Wrong wrong wrong! They are sweethearts. But what did I know? I had to be taught. You have to honour your teacher -- and I do.
