Hoodoo Ritual Site 01-17-06

On Wednesday, January 18, park employees found meat laced with needles sitting beside a Mt. Tabor Park trail across the street from the main playground. Portland Park Rangers and Multnomah County Animal Services have investigated this further and have concluded the following:

The beef tongue slit down the middle and with needles in it, discovered in Mt Tabor Park on 1-17-06, was NOT intended to harm dogs. This was apparently used as part of a classic Hoodoo (Voodoo/witchcraft) ritual that calls for a beef tongue, prepared as the one we found, to put a spell or curse on specific enemies. Park Rangers exam of the tongue discovered conclusive evidence that this was the case.

Map this on Platial

Amazing view and WPA rockwork

While the view from Mt. Tabor is well known and heavily visited, there is another great volcano in town!
This land used to be the Hill Military Academy. It was donated to the public in 1935. Works Progress Administration workers did the massive amount of rockwork at the site, including the tunnel the road travels through on the west side approach. The west side approach is the better way to the top, as the City Bible Church occupies a massive campus on the east side approach (they just might pull you over to hand you a leaflet).
NOTE: This site is very popular with local rock climbers.

Map this on Platial

Orca Whale harpooned here in 1931

Oswald the Whale came for a visit in October 1931. He never left.

At first, people thought he was a sea serpent stuck in the Columbia River slough. It turned out, the "monster" was just a playful 15-foot baby killer whale.

The Columbian reported thousands of people flocking to the banks of the slough daily until Ed Lessard, an ex-whaler who lived in Clark County, figured he could make a buck off the aquatic mammal. He and his brother acquired a fishing license and harpooned Ossie through the head.

"Lessard looked at the thousands who came and went on the river banks and thought of them in terms of admission, so much per head," the paper reported.

"Lessard will raise Oswald and put him on exhibition, minus the acrobatics, of course, for a dead whale has to be very still."

The brothers were taken to court over the action and convicted of violating fishing laws, but they appealed on the grounds that Ossie wasn't a fish, and won.

They toured the country with Ossie's body in a large metal tank, but when profits dried up, they took him to their property on Livingston Mountain and dumped him off.

The farm was sold to a man in China, and Ossie was forgotten.

Over time, the location of the tank became a lost Dutchman's mine of sorts.

Eventually, someone ran across it. News of its whereabouts spread. The box was demolished, and Ossie's body was desecrated by vandals. His teeth were knocked out. His body was broken up.

Birthplace of Jack Reed

The revolutionary poet, journalist and a founder of the US Communist party was born in Portland and buried in Moscow's Kermlin.
At this site his grandfather’s mansion Cedar Hill, stood on 5 acres. Today, only the elaborate concrete steps that connect SW Cedar Lane with Cactus Drive survive but nearby SW Green Street is named for his capitalist grandfather.
Directly above this site, in the NE corner of Washington Park, is the only memorial to him outside his plain grave at the wall of the Kremlin. It is a plaque on a park bench with a quote of his... unfortunately an uncontroversial quote about the beauty of Portland, NOT about the Revolution.
PLEASE NOTE: The naming of Reed College is IN NO WAY connected to Jack Reed.

Old Zoo Structures Still Visable

Dispite being removed to a far off section of the park 50 years ago, traces of the old zoo can be seen along this dirt trail above the roadway. The trail goes right through the concrete foundations of an old enclosure that ran up the hillside. The trail hits the road again near the old elephant barn. It now serves as a picnic shelter but this is where Rosy, Portland's first elephant, lived.

Map this on Platial
During the early morning one day in the 1990s, a man committed suicide by dousing himself with gasoline and lighting himself at the base of the tall column here.
Later on, his mother dedicated a bench down the hill in his memory. The plaque reflects the fact that he was a musician.

Map this on Platial

Location of Mulugeta Seraw's 1988 Murder

One of the most shocking crimes in Portland's history occured here. In many ways the city has not recovered from the idea that this happened here in enlightened and progressive Portland.
Mulugeta Seraw was an Ethiopian student who went to the United States to attend college and was killed in 1988 in Portland, Oregon by a racist skinhead gang, which consisted of Ken "Death" Mieske, Kyle Brewster, and Steve Strasser, who were linked to White Aryan Resistance. Seraw was killed on Southeast 31st Avenue, near his apartment.

On November 12, 1988, a group of racists known as East Side White Pride brutally beat Seraw with a bat and left him in a puddle of his own blood. Seraw died in the early-morning hours of the following day. The murder was one of the most shocking crimes in Portland history. In response, hundreds of people turned out for rallies against racism. The three men who beat Seraw to death were arrested and, in 1990, Mieske was convicted of first-degree murder and Brewster and Strasser of manslaughter and assault.

Penguin Swimming Pool in 1957

The swimming pool along N. Portland Blvd. was occupied by penguins in 1957.
The city zoo housed its penguins in the center's pool for six months because the zoo lacked the proper facilities when the birds arrived from Antarctica. Many Portlanders still remember calling it Penguin Park!

Where Courtney Love Stripped Her Way To The Top

Mary's Club is a Portland nightlife landmark. Courtney Love danced here in the 1980's as "Michelle". She made connections during this time by sleeping with every rocker that came through town.
The club itself is a popular stop with people passing through Portland, especially musicians and actors. Three different movies have been filmed at Mary's Club: "Bongwater", "Dangerous Pursuit", and "Brainsmashers". The exterior of Mary's was featured prominently in "The Hunted" and has been seen on CNN, E!, and MSNBC.
