Pan Mass Challenge, Day 1
here more information and to help sponsor my ride.) Each time I've biked the PMC, I wondered whether I could ever manage to follow the same complex route without the benefit of all the volunteers and signs to keep you from getting lost. One time I even tried to keep track of how many turns there were, but I quickly lost count. It's like that old joke about how to get around Massachusetts: keep turning and eventually you'll get there. Seeing the route plotted out also seems to confirm that bit of mathematical wisdom about how the length of the coastline of England approaches infinity the closer you look at it. It appears to be straight, but if you type the start- and end-points "Sturbridge, MA to Buzzards Bay, MA" into Google Maps, you get a route that's 15 miles shorter, even though it appears to diverge much farther from the straight line between those points.
