Dyers Triple Burger - TN

The story about the 91 year old grease is awesome, along with getting your Vitamin G (Grease). Burger documentarian George Motz visits Dyer's Burgers in Memphis to investigate the joint's unique deep-fried hamburgers.

"Back then, they didn't have the flat tops and all this, so they cook in a cast-iron skillet," Dyer's owner Tom Robertson says. "As you cook more burgers, the grease grows, and eventually it becomes a deep-fried hamburger. We strain and process our grease daily, but we've never thrown it out and started over, so somewhere in there's molecules from 1912. That's what makes it so good." Order a triple with mustard, pickle, and onion.

St. James Gate - NJ

I've been here and can say they make a nice burger....Irish bar to the core in Maplewood just off the train tracks. Pub style....you have to get an 8oz St. James Burger mixed with the Dublin Burger; Irish bacon, called "rashers" and bluecheese. Sounds gross, but it actually is a great burger. Mine was a bit overcooked, cause I'm a medium-rare fan, but nonetheless add it to the tour of places to try if you're in the area. Thanks for that one Chris!

Map this on Platial

BURGER JOINT - Le Parker Meridien Hotel

This hidden gem serves some of New York's best burgers. Don't let the fancy address put you off: You'll feel right at home in the rec room–like dining area of this burger shop. The burgers tend to come a little less done than you ordered; that is, a medium burger here might be more like a medium-rare burger elsewhere.

Map this on Platial

Jalama Beach - Jalama Burger - CA

the World famous Jalama burger starts with a 1/3 lb lean ground beef, stacked with fresh sliced veggies on a grilled bun, AND made extra special with a secret Jalama burger sauce. Add cheese, bacon, jalapenos...it's all healthy at the beach!
The house-specialty, the Jalama Burger, is made with fresh local beef and is famous as a good "beach burger." As for the atmosphere of the place, it's hard to tell where the store ends and the restaurant begins. Every surface in the store, including the ceiling, is covered with items for sale, and the dining room, with its memorabilia-covered walls and view of the beach, doubles as a used bookstore. The whole enterprise has that weather-beaten air of a life spent at a little beach at the end of a long road.
Dirty Martins Place - TX

Dirty Martin's is one of the oldest hamburger temples in the country, founded in 1926, and is still one of the very best. The double-griddled buns, gently browned and buttered; the fresh meat; the hot griddle; and the picture-perfect form represent all that is best in burgerdom to me. The burger, broader and thinner than the Shake Shack's, gives you more salty surface area and just as much juicy beef goodness. It's a burger worth going to Austin for, and the tater tots were good, too.Today, Dirty's is still in the original building and location near the University of Texas campus in Austin. The ceiling in the back dining room has been raised to accommodate four large-screen TVs and a few new menu items have been added such as the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Veggie Burger, Homemade Chili and Queso, an assortment of appetizers, Nightly dinner specials, and our wonderful Cheeseburger Salad. Other than that, Dirty Martin's is still providing the same delicious food and great service that it always has. So come on in to see us and enjoy the bar style dining up front , watch a sporting event in the relaxed dining area in the back, or if you prefer the outdoors, feel free to dine on our front or our new back patio while you people-watch and listen to some music. Any way you like it, you can't lose with the combination of the cozy Dirty Martin's atmosphere, our friendly family of employees and of course our famous, award winning food!!

Map this on Platial

Hamburger + Fries aka Burger Joint - CA

Burger Joint, a 50's retro burger spot, was built on the need for a truly good hamburger; one that was free of chemicals and added hormones. Our burgers are cooked to your specification and are made with local, naturally fed Niman Ranch beef that has never been implanted with hormones or fed sub therapeutic antibiotics. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy high quality hamburgers and thus strive to maintain reasonable menu prices without sacrificing quality. Burger Joint was selected "Best Low Cost Niman Ranch Burger" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 1997.

Mentioned in GQ's top 20 before you die places to grab a burger.

Map this on Platial

Ann's Snack Bar - GA

If you're serious about burgers, head straight for the Ghetto burger, decadently slathered with onion, bacon, chili and cheese. The Hood burger features two lean cheeseburgers topped with bacon and coleslaw; order the combo for lemonade and fries. The chili dog split is two dogs deep-fried and slathered in chili on a white bun. The crinkle fries are nothing special, but the burgers and dogs are worth a trip.

Crown Burger - UT

        Another first...pastrami.
Each of Crown Burger's five locations inhabits a clean and spacious atmosphere with a distinctly medieval decor. Tapestries and sconces adorn the walls, and customers dine underneath massive wrought-iron chandeliers.

Order the signature Crown Burger: A light Russian-type dressing, shredded lettuce, soft buns and a hearty appetite make this specialty less assertive than a bacon cheeseburger; lean pastrami makes it all the more digestible. Be sure to add an order of onion rings or perfectly golden french fries, along with a side of Crown's famous fry sauce.

Map this on Platial

Feltner’s Whatta-Burger - AR

Heading north out of Little Rock towards the Ozarks, don’t miss Feltner’s Whatta-Burger in Russellville. There are Whatta-Burgers throughout the southwest, and many are good, but we’ve never found another one as impressive as this.

The menu boasts that the burgers are “custom made,” which they are, and they are beauteous. A single is a quarter pound, served on a broad bun, and few people order one without also getting an order of crisp french fries on the side. Indeed, many people don’t merely order a single burger. They get a double or, better yet, a double-double (double meat AND double cheese). Milk shakes are available in flavors that include chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, pineapple, orange, cherry, banana, and butterscotch; a large one is at least a quart, and it is so thick that you will need a spoon in addition to a straw to consume it.

Map this on Platial

Bartley's Burger - MA

Great burgers and the best onion rings in the world make Bartley's a perennial favorite with a cross section of Cambridge, from Harvard students to regular folks. The 40-plus-year-old family business isn't a cottage, but a high-ceilinged, crowded room plastered with signs and posters (there's also a small outdoor seating area). Burgers bear the names of local and national celebrities, notably political figures; the names change, but the ingredients stay the same.

Map this on Platial

Rogue Burger - PA

How about the burger? The waitstaff has t-shirts on that featured said hamburger, so my immediate reaction was to order something else, but that would have been silly so I ordered the burger. Click on the picture to get a better look at the beast (10 ounces of beef). It was large, and it was tasty (and the pomme frites, that's fancy talk for french fries, were tasty as well). Was this the best burger I have ever had? No.

Was it the best burger I have ever had in Philly? No.

It was a damned good burger though, however if someone visits me and says, 'Hey, Scott let's go get some kick ass burgers. Where in Philly shall we go?' I won't suggest Rouge (though I will go back to Rouge to sample some of their other menu items), I will, without hesitation, suggest Monk's (Martin, we need to get you there to have a burger!).

White Manna might get all the press in Hackensack, but this place is a legend in it's own right. Fried double cheese on a soft roll, onion, pickle, ketchup. Order a bag full!

Star Ledger Munchmobile in 2006 mentions:
There are few more centrally located burger joints than the White Diamond, just off Exit 135 of the Parkway. Yoo Hoo in the refrigerator case, replica advertising signs on the walls ("Fearless Fosdick Says Get Wildroot Cream Oil, Charlie!") and a nearly around-the-clock operation make the Diamond a highway oasis. "Best in the state, if not the world," a customer raved. "Just the right amount of grease and cooked with care."

Map this on Platial
Yet another first for New Haven: not only did the city introduce pizza to America, it is also home of the hamburger, introduced to the world by this diner in 1900. If you drive or walk by too quickly, you might miss this small, unpretentious, cottage-like building tucked away along the bustling street. But, on the inside, New Haveners enjoy "a bomb" of a burger, so good that ketchup and mustard are no-no's. The burgers are grilled vertically for the best taste possible, and if you ask nicely, you might get a slice of cheese. Maybe. This is a classic New Haven landmark not to be missed!

Map this on Platial

Linwood Inn - NJ

From Newark Star Ledger - 2006 Munchmobile article:

Yosh's Linwood Inn is a cheery, NASCAR flag-festooned hangout. The menu includes clams, crab cakes, fish and chips, shrimp Alfredo and zuppa de pesce, among other items. But true to our mission, we all ordered the same thing, and here, at this lively neighborhood bar, we found the day's best burger: plump, juicy, char-grilled to near perfection.

"The best burgers in town," Ted McBride of Woodbridge had e-mailed us. It won the test of the day!

Map this on Platial

Murder Burger - CA

Murder Burger, perched ominously near the entrance of this liberal enclave, would seem to lay that latter claim to waste. "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!" it seems to say, at least to the stereotypical, vegetable-eating, animal-rights-loving, Birkenstock-wearing Davis denizen. Not that Murder Burger doesn't have a veggie burger on the menu--it does. It's also got plenty of frou-frou items: espressos, mochas, iced lattes and 20 different flavors of Italian soda. But let's get to the meat of the matter, which are those creatures that have given their lives to keep us fat and happy, namely, cows and chickens and ostriches. Yes, that's right, ostriches. For those not in the know, ostrich is high in protein, low in fat and makes a damn tasty burger, at least the way Murder Burger prepares it, with lettuce and onion and tomato and chipotle mayonnaise and mustard on a toasted sesame bun. One bite and maybe you'll agree Davis is the best place to live in the country.

Map this on Platial

Crabills - OH

Hamburger connoisseurs will smile with joy upon walking in the door of this minuscule, 8-stool diner where itsy-bitsy burgers, known to some as sliders, are served at fifty cents apiece (fifty-five cents for a cheeseburger). The burgers are served on small buns, with small squares of cheese, if desired, and with mustard and/or relish for a few cents extra. Six or eight of them make a nice meal.

These are not hamburgers for nutritional prigs. From the counter, you can watch them cooked on a grill to the left. A golf ball-size glob of meat is placed upon the hot iron in what appears to be about a half inch of bubbling oil. It is flattened out with a spatula, becoming a sort of free-form tile of meat that is thoroughly immersed in the hot grease, then gradually moved to the left on the grill, where there is somewhat less oil, and where the cooked patties sizzle until dark. They have a nice crunch to their exterior, and because they are so thin, they have no interior. Like White Castles, but better, these little fellas, even in their buns, are two-bite sandwiches.

Above the counter hang signs announcing the current Crabill record holder: “THE KING, Dave Woods, ate 31 burgers 2/22/01”. There is another record posted for the person who ate the most doubles, which is two burgers in a single bun. Doubles seem like a good way to go if you believe these hamburgers are just too small; but in our experience, the single burger in its spongy little bun, with a single slice of orange cheese melted from the heat, garnished with Crabill’s dark mustard, is one of the perfect foods, not to be modified in any way.
Primanti Brothers - PA

Known as one of Pittsburg's best sandwich shops. According to the Wall Street Journal "First, the burger is more than the sum of its parts. You take a bite of all of it at once -- the meat, the bun, the condiments and any other additions such as raw tomato, lettuce, fruit, nuts. At the hallowed Primanti's on Pittsburgh's gritty 18th Street, they put the fries inside the burger. And it's pretty good."

Might have to give it a try. They have a few locations in and around Pittsburg to try, but the original is on 46 18th Street.

Collins Pub - NJ

When an Irish Pub is known more for its burgers than its lagers, you know there has to be something special about them. The 8-oz. burgers at Collins Pub in Morris Plains overshadow anything else on the menu in this decidedly Irish eatery, and it's only partly because of the meat. Having your steak-quality burger on a toasted roll is fine, but Collins offers (and suggests) you replace the roll with an English muffin. Looking around at the packed dining area, you can see that most of the crowd has taken the suggestion. The nooks and crannies in the muffin do a better job of soaking up the flavor of your choice of toppings, which include mushrooms, onions, crisp lettuce and tomatoes. And of course there's the cheese: Be specific as to what type you want; an answer of "any kind" will not cut it. Although the burgers are the food of choice, Collins Bar doesn't skimp on other menu options. Any meat dish does well here and appetizers work great when sidling up to the bar for a drink.

Map this on Platial

In-N-Out-Burger - CA

13850 Francisquito Ave. Baldwin Park, California 91706 Sunday through Thursday 10:30 a.m.-1:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday 10:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m. Interstate 10 and Francisquito Avenue, Baldwin Park, CA
In 1948, the first In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park. Harry's idea of a drive-thru hamburger stand where customers could order through a two-way speaker box was quite unique. In that era, it was common to see carhops serving those who wanted to order food from their car. Harry's idea caught on and California's first drive-thru hamburger stand was born.

Did you know that In-N-Out Burger has a secret unpublished menu for insiders who are In-The-Know. Next time you're at In-N-Out (i.e. tomorrow . . . or maybe tonight), order a bag of these off-the-menu specials: "3-by-3" = three meat patties and three slices of cheese. "4-by-4" = four meat patties and four slices of cheese. "2-by-4" = two meat patties and four slices of cheese. *Note: You can get a burger with as many meat patties or cheese slices as you want. Just tell the In-N-Out Burger cashier how many meat patties and how much cheese you want and that is what you'll get! For instance, if you want 6 pieces of meat and 10 pieces of cheese tell them you want a "6-by-10." "Double Meat" = like a Double Double without cheese. "3 by Meat" = three meat patties and no cheese. "Animal Style" = the meat is cooked and fried with mustard and then pickles are added, extra spread and grilled onions are added. "Animal Style Fries" = fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions and pickles (if you ask for them). "Protein Style" = for all you low-carbohydrate dieters, this is a burger with no bun (wrapped in lettuce). "Flying Dutchman" = two meat patties, two slices of melted cheese and nothing else - not even a bun! Fries "Well-Done" = extra crispy fries . . . even better than the regular! Fries "Light" = opposite of fries well-done, more raw than most people like 'em "Grilled Cheese" = no meat, just melted cheese, tomato, lettuce and spread on a bun. "Veggie Burger" = burger without the patty or cheese. Sometimes we call this the "Wish Burger." "Neapolitan" Shake = strawberry, vanilla and chocolate blended together. The friendly employees of In-N-Out Burger will take your special order without question, if you use the right terminology. The printed receipt will have your special request typed on it just as we said it.

Map this on Platial

Five Guys - VA

Spreading like wildfire across the East and and Mid-Atlantic Region...it's Five Guys.
A "hamburger" ($4.49) or "cheeseburger" ($5.09) here is by default a double-patty sandwich. If you want a single patty, you'll have to order a "little hamburger" ($3.09) or "little cheeseburger" ($3.69). Bacon is 60¢ extra across the board. All other topping options are provided at no extra cost, but you have to ask for them—otherwise your burger comes naked.

Yes, burgers here, unfortunately, are cooked to well-done as per company policy. While this would seemingly result in a dry puck of a burger, ours, while not dripping with juices, were moist enough. The 3.3-ounce patties are packed moderately loose by hand each morning and are cooked atop a griddle, which, along with the coarse grind, makes for a great crunchy crust. The joint gets the cheese-melt just right, too.

Five Guys was founded in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, by Janie and Jerry Murrell and their five sons, the "Five Guys." In 2002, there were five locations in Northern Virginia run by the family. The restaurants had gained popularity among locals, and the Murrells decided to franchise the stores. As of March 2007, there were more than 150 locations along the U.S. East Coast from Florida to Connecticut. There are 1,000 more in the building or planning stage. The company claims that each store has a revenue of about one million dollars per year.

Map this on Platial
The burger is cooked behind the bar on a open-flame grill. That's a good start. It's an enormous piece of meat, weighing in at about 10 ounces I'd estimate. That's a bit too big for my taste, but generally not a deal-breaker. But don't get your hopes up, because it's somewhat downhill from there.

The patties are not seasoned at all as far as I can tell. No salt. No pepper. It goes against everything that I stand for to not season a piece of meat, especially one that size. And then there's the roll. It's a "hard roll" (aka Kaiser roll), which is not optimal to my mind. I like Kaiser rolls for breakfast with butter, or better yet with Taylor ham, egg, and cheese. But I just don't find them appropriate for burgers. First off ketchup always squirts out the top where that little hole is. What's the story with that?

All that nostalgic charm wouldn't matter if the grill fell short, but the burgers are uncommonly tasty. Liberally seasoned charbroiled patties are served on sturdy toasted buns and embellished with flawless accompaniments: thick, peppery bacon; smoky, piquant "special sauce"; savory sauteed mushrooms, and even generous slices of ham. Fries and onion rings are crispy, golden perfection and the hand-dipped shakes are divine (and their mammoth size definitely dictates sharing).

Map this on Platial

Denny's 130pd burger

Feb 28, 2007 - A Pennyslvania eatery is on track to topple a Guinness record for the world's largest hamburger. Denny's Beer Barrel Pub cooked up a 123-pound behemoth this past weekend besting a record set by a New Jersey restaurant by 18 pounds. The Beer Barrel Main Event Charity Burger sells for a hefty $379 and serves about 100 people. Denny's used 80 pounds beef, 160 slices of cheese and a house-baked 30-pound bun, among other things to create the meaty monstrosity. It was cooked overnight in an oven for more than six hours. No word yet on whether the creators of the gargantuan burger referred to today's Cookbook of the Day, for recipe ideas. My guess would be no.
Conways Red Top - CO

The hamburgers dished out by Conway's are genuine whoppers – a half a foot across, served on broad-domed buns, accompanied by shoestring french fries and titanic pitchers of soda. Panavision-wide but not gourmet-thick, they are happy lunch counter patties with a good oily smack. They are sold whole or half, topped with regular cheese (or, as the ingenuous menu advises, “a generous serving of Velveeta cheese”) or zestier jalapeno cheese, or served as a “Hickory Dickery Top” infused with smoke flavor and smothered with chopped onions and barbecue sauce.

The Red Tops have been a family operation since 1962 when Norb Conway bought the hamburger shop he worked in and he and his wife and ten children went to work. The Conways instilled an unshakeable pride in the business that is as much a part of this restaurant’s charm as are the giant hamburgers. After all, the Red Tops aren’t really much more than fast-food hamburger shops, with waitresses in red hats and blue uniforms who deliver the check with your meal and provide the kind of quick service one expects. The honest menu, homemade food, and genuine hospitality are delightfully oldfangled. (From Roadhouse.com)

Map this on Platial

Chee Burger Chee Burger - NJ

Now this may not be the oldest operation on the circuit, but this newer franchise is taking this area by storm. Cheeburger Cheeburger may be one of the happiest hangouts in Westfield. It appeals mostly to the family crowd, but even young couples and mature groups cannot resist the appeal of this kitschy, old-time filling station. The only grumbling here is heard from those waiting for a table, and it's because of the lunch rush that the takeout counter stays very busy. Even though it's hidden away next to the train station in downtown Westfield, people find their way here to fill up on the famous cheeseburgers and shakes. The burgers range from normal (5.5-ounce) to ginormous (20-ounce), and if you finish the latter by yourself, you earn a photo on the Wall of Fame. There's a huge list of free toppings for your meat, incuding chopped garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, blue cheese, A1 steak sauce, bacon and grilled portobello mushrooms.

A great local story....metal in Newark by day....ground chuck and cheese in Westfield by nite. It's busy, so be prepared.

Map this on Platial

Alonso's - MD

Area is known as Roland Park. When the Classic Catering folks took over Alonso's several years ago, regulars quietly wondered what would become of the corner bar/restaurant's signature staple -- a 24-ounce mound of meat that qualifies as the holy grail of hamburgers. Alonso's pub-grub menu was replaced with more upscale fare, and the smoky center bar gave way to a new long rail that opened up space for a few more tables. But the 24-ounce burger, and its 16-ounce little brother, were spared and now continue to satisfy gargantuan appetites while eliciting contented Homer Simpson-like sighs. When the big burger -- dubbed The Alonso Meal -- makes its way through the dining area, heads turn in amazement, and rightfully so. The beefy sandwich dwarfs the smattering of French fries served with it, and it's nearly impossible to eat the whole thing without losing either the top or bottom portion of the bun. Plan your dining time wisely, as the gastronomic granddaddy takes at least 15-20 minutes to prepare (but the good news is, if you order it medium well, it'll come that way -- not crispy on the outside and rare in the middle). Alonso Burger $12with Bacon $13.50Alonso’s famous one-pound hamburger cooked to order, served on a Kaiser roll with lettuce, tomato and fries.Includes choice of cheese: American, Cheddar, Blue, PepperJack, Swiss, Provolone or Fresh Mozzarella

Map this on Platial

All American Drive In - LI NY

All-American is a Long Island institution. Most people from the Island know about it, and many have stopped there at least once. It is a small establishment, with no indoor seating and only a few outdoor tables. Most people buy and eat in their car or simply hang out in front. The lack of dining facilities hasn't hurt their business; the place is almost never empty, and in the hours surrounding lunch and dinner times the lines for the indoor order counter pack the small indoor waiting area and spill outside. Maybe All American was once, indeed, a drive-in, but in the quarter century I've known the place, you park and walk inside.

The big sellers here are the hamburgers. The basic burger is small, probably 3 ounces before cooking, and good for a quick bite (and, at 90 cents quite reasonable). Most people will want more for lunch, though: the double-header ($1.70) is two patties between a bun (no third piece of bun between them), and a double-double is what you'd imagine it is. Alternately, a quarter-pounder ($1.85) can also be ordered. Though small, the burgers are intensely flavored, served with ketchup, pickles, and finely diced onions unless specified otherwise. They don't have the flavorless, generic taste of the big chains.

Map this on Platial
Hamburger $4.50 and tell em everything you want on it or it's plain! No fries. No garbage. Out of all of the tavern burgers around, the oversized bun fits the burger. (I should've gotten another!) Great old style pub atmosphere. Somehow, all the firemen in Newark recommended this place as the best around. I have to admit, they make a darn good burger!

Map this on Platial

Corner Bistro - NY

What is there to say about Corner Bistro that hasn't already been said? Constantly landing at the top of most best-of lists when it comes to New York City burgers, they are delicious, if a bit hyped.

The Corner Bistro, located in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood, is an unassuming little joint that serves some serious sandwiches. Cooked in a small broiler just to the left of the bar, these burgers have been a friend to boozers for years on end.

The fat patties are served open-face on a toasted bun with onion, pickle, tomato, and lettuce resting on the roll top. This serving arrangement allows you to choose which toppings you'd like to dress your sandwich with, instead of making you open the roll to pick off those you don't. This, of course, is critical if you order a cheeseburger, as discarded toppings (if any) won't then stick to the gooey stuff.
