RM Schindler Buildings

(33 of 35 structures) Here are plotted buildings of R.M. Schindler (Rudolf Michael Schindler, lived: 1887 to 1953). Schindler was an Austrian-American architect who worked in Los Angeles during the mid-20th century. A student of Frank LLoyd Wright and once partner with Neutra, he is often associated with the fringes of the modern movement in architecture, yet worked and trained with some of its foremost practitioners.

Wolfe House (destroyed)

1928-1929. Old Stage Road, Avalon, Catalina Ssland, CA. Schindler's most remarkable hillside home, this house was easily seen from the harbor. Built for Ethel and Charles Wolfe, to promote their costume business in Los Angles, it was more of a summer home. All of the projecting roofs are used as decks, once again showing Schindler's desire to utalize the exterior spaces of a home. Since Destroyed (Summer 2001).

Map this on Platial

Elliot House

1930. On a small, inclined property in Los Feliz, this house is another classic example of Schindler's style. The house was intentionally built to promote the growth of ivy on the property, to offer provicy from the nearby neighbors. The house is an interesting study in geometry, with its dominating horizontal-verticle weaving lines. 'Gesamtkunstwerk' or 'complete-art work' emerges here, the old European ideal of building and placing custom furniture to complete the space. Also, notice the matching car port. [L.A. 1924. Similar to the Schindler/ Chase house on Kings Road. Schindler blurs the line between indoor/ outdoor relationships. He was constricted by local regulations at the time and was forced to use pitched roofs. Otherwise, the structure is very similar to other buildings, with it's use of bare concrete and wood.

Map this on Platial
