Medill's Paris Seminar: Fall 2004

I took off to France for my next adventure in grad school. I took a global journalism seminar in the heart of Paris, France. Those two weeks were amazing - talking to journalists from all over the world and exploring all the different Paris neighborhoods. Mark rented a flat inside the 3rd Arron. It was romantic and in the center of everything...plus it had internet access :)

And after two weeks, I headed to London for my residency at Reuters.

Map this on Platial

Prague Castle

I loved Prague. Sara did her residency in Prague, so we had a free place to crash and explore this beautiful city. It was most dramatic castle we visited in Europe. We also had our first snowfall in Europe - here...Nov. 2004.

Map this on Platial
On our trip to Ireland, we stayed at a motel outside of Swords. As everyone took a bus into Dublin, Mark and I explored Swords...Mark had a meeting and we had to stay near by. Swords was small, quaint and it had a castle under renovations. Plus it had an e-mail cafe.

Map this on Platial
Fondue in Paris...our global journalism crew ate here on our last night together in Paris.

We got vin blanche and vin rouge served in baby bottles. Funny and comforting....

And when it comes to fondue...You have focus on twirling just the right amount of formage on to your bread piece. You also have to make sure your meat is as cooked as you want it to be...

Map this on Platial

Johin Sushi

My favorite lunch spot when I worked at Reuters in London. It's a small deli with a row of stools for dining in. Most folks ordered out for take-away at lunchtime. As for myself, I loved eating there and working on postcards.

I'm grateful folks at Johin would let me special order items that are not part of their lunch specials: coconut soup and rice. The soup was so rich and the rice sopped it up nicely. At times, I would add some sushi to my lunch orders. But most of the time, I would get full on the soup and rice.

When I couldn't finish lunch, I would heated up the soup and rice separately at home. For breakfast, I would then dump both into one bowl. It's a tasty breakfast for a gal like me who doesn't have much of a sweet tooth in the morning.

Map this on Platial

My tube stop on the way to Reuters

During my Reuters residency, I lived about 5-minute walk from this tube stop. I'd try to fit in some blogging and e-mail a few hours before I had to take off. Sometimes I had coffee with me on the tube. Sometimes I was pissed at work. But I'm grateful for the experience of working at international wire service in Europe.

I miss London.

Map this on Platial

Piccadilly Circus

Our flat was a five minute walk away from Picadilly Circus....My dad reminded me we visited this touristy part of town, more than ten years ago...It looks different...I didn't remember seeing Virgn Record Stores, Burger King, Starbucks, McDonald's and Pizza Hut around the Eros statue. I know it's a tourist-trap, but there's a special place in my heart for Piccadilly - it was my alternate Tube stop for work. Sometimes Mark telecommuted from the Burger King nearby and I would meet up with him after work. Plus, Piccadilly is the easiest place to navigate to. Often I'd meet up with Andrea and friends at this spot.

Map this on Platial
