Our home in DC

        Spring 2005...
This is where we started our journey home. I wrapped up my DC quarter and my classmates were taking off for jobs and for job hunting. We had some nasty weather at the beginning of our journey west - but we made it home....with no time to spare. I had a week before my interview in NYC.

Map this on Platial
The rain was so bad - we could barely see out our windows and the road in front of us.

We stopped in Cumberland, Maryland - for lunch. The town's inside the Appalachian Mountains...somewhere.

We found a lot that offered two hours of parking - free.

The menu had a "local" specialty, Maryland crabcake sandwich. So, I did the South Beach thing...and ate only the crabcakes. Yum!

Evidence of rain...It seemed like a sleepy town and the folks were nice...not exactly overjoyed to see tourists in town...But nice.

Map this on Platial
Winter 2003...
We crossed into New Mexico and we were still listening to the game. We had planned on staying at a Super 8....but the book mentioned some Hollywood glamour at the El Rancho in Gallup - just off the New Mexico border. The price was right and we stayed at this adorable motel, all decked out with christmas lights, snow, and autographed photos of movie stars. Ok, I don't think they planned on decorating the place with snow, it just happened, but it looked cute.

Map this on Platial

Just outside of Baker, California

        Winter 2003
Mark and I have been on this stretch of I-15 - lot's of times....this time - I was heading to Chicago.

We estimated that the trip from Southern California to Chicago, IL, would take 4 days. Mark kept checking with me about my driving endurance - how many hours could I stay behind the wheel with bathroom breaks and gas stops. I figured I could drive on aveage of 6 hours per day based on my experience driving down the 5 from San Francisco to LA on a regular basis. So - we stared at the maps in the Portable Deluxe Road Atlas put out by Mapquest. The last map outlines all the major highways in the United States and labels the roads with time estimates between major cities. We wanted enough time to explore some touristy kitch places along the way. We also wanted to give us enough time to navigate safely through any possible snow storms - in the mountains in Arizona and New Mexico - I had fun driving through the damn snow - my head haunched over the wheel and praying for no sudden turnouts.

Map this on Platial

Applebees Pit Stop in Hays, Kansas

        Spring 2005...
So by day 3, Mark and I agreed to do more touristy things. We were prepared to head off the road at the next cool sign for some historic or other place. We found this Applebee in Kansas. One of our first stops for food.

Map this on Platial

Topeka Statehouse - at night...

        Spring 2005...
We spent the night in Topkea....ok...more like outside of the capital city of Kansas. This is the capital building. I was still mad at Mark. We made up the next morning.
Little did I know that I would be coming back to Topeka for the next chapter in my journalism adventures...

Frisch's Big Boy - Indiana

We stopped in Richmond, Indiana for the night. We used Super 8 Motels - for the trip. Cheap, clean and free continetal breakfast.

We stopped at Frisch's Big Boy. In Diamond Bar, I'm used to calling it Bob's Big Boy....I had a tasty patty melt and the server recomended a butterfinger cheesecake.

"Let me put it this way," she told us, "When I hear these things come in, I order a slice, straight away."

Map this on Platial
