I love food and taking pictures of my meals. So, I figured there maybe there are platial folks out there who may indulge in this visual hobby. I'll just post up quick bites of food places I've been to...I'll try to get around to posting pix as well. Jump in and add your food reviews, if you like...

Ixtapa

I had a tasty Mexican dessert at Ixtapa. Since I spent my honeymoon at the beach resort town of Ixtapa, Mexico, I wondered if I'd find entrees from the region inside this Lawrence restaurant, like tritas or pozole. But I found nothing outside of your typical American-Mexican menu, tacos, burritos and nachos. Still, I enjoyed this fried ice cream dish. The bread crumbs stayed warm around a ball of vanilla ice cream. Juicy strawberries and whipped cream rounded out the sweet flavors melting on my tongue.

Map this on Platial

Udupi Palace

On MLK Holiday - I was in the mood to see "Hotel Rwanda" - but we took a nap and missed the film. So we did dinner at the Udupi Palace in Takoma Park. They have a branch in Chicago and I recognized it from a Medill Broadcast project. During our broadcast production quarter - we had to find something in Chicago/Evanston that our professors didn't know about. Then we had to produce a SOT-type package...with interviews and b-roll. A year before, one group produced a video project on the Udupi restaurant on Devon. They showed us how the chef created these yummy Dosai dishes - they looked like crepes...but it's made with rice dough stuff. After watching the package - I had a craving for dosai. I tried some in Berkeley - back in the summer. Good and filling. Now, on MLK - my dosai craving returned and I tried the paneer dosai - the India crepe stuffed with homemade cheese and bell peppers. It's light and the cheese reminded me of an omlette dish. We also had pakoras for starters - breaded veggies. I tried a chilli pakora - the first time I willing bit into a chilli. My mouth didn't explode and it had an interested, biting taste....kinda like when I have a nacho cheese craving...without the cheese. The Udupi Palace serves pure veggie cuisine and it's sure to fill up the empty stomach. I was disappointed with the chai...but I guess I'm used to the super sweet tea served at Naan in Curry on Telegraph. So, I'm always expecting my chai to be sweet....still, I can always add sugar. Mark's India coffee smelled great. I didn't want to sip any of it. I didn't want to stay wired and awake that evening.

Map this on Platial

Cafe de la Paz

Good times at Cafe de la Paz. This Latin-American restaurant is one of my favorites in Berkeley. Nice servers, yummy food and delightful cocktails. When I lived in the Bay Area, we've lot's of celebrations here, going away parties, graduation parties and any excuse for a big group of people to indulge in a huge plate of paella.

We had the seafood paella on my last visit to Cali. Heaven! Fresh fish and shellfish...I love the smoky mussels. Savory rice to soap up the juices. It's my first paella in, well, too long. We shared this dish and a couple of tapas. It was a hearty meal for four people. I haven't been able to find a place in Kansas that serves paella. Damn shame. I'm grateful for the paella pan we got from our wedding gifts. I do have a poor woman's version that involves salsa and canned mussels. It takes a while because I let the rice simmer in the broth to develop a thick texture. I know I should use brown rice, but I'm trying to be healthy about it. Still, paella from Cafe de la Paz - it's great.

Map this on Platial

Blue Coral

Blue Coral is a new high-end restaurant in Newport Beach, opened by the same folks who own Roy's and Fleming's. It's a seafood restaurant with an lobster cobb salad, Maine lobster en fuego (baked lobster with chile-spiked mayonnaise) and the fish stew, cioppino. You can get halibut poached in shrimp and vegetable broth, salmon grilled with roasted pepper, sea bass in parchment with thyme, lemon and tomato broth and sole battered and sauteed with chive butter and toasted almonds. Everything is served a-la-carte. Side dishes include lobster mac 'n' cheese, mashed potatoes and fuji apple and blue cheese cole slaw.

I came here for a recent birthday of mine and really dig the electric-blue wall, where you have a choice of 72 vodkas in stocked.

Lobster Ravioli from Ventuno Ristorante

My dad treated us to a yummy Italian dinner at the Flamingo Hilton. Ventuno Ristorante had this yummy Lobster Ravioli dish. The cream sauce was nearly overwhelming in it's richness. The lobster filling rounded out the meal and complimented the sauce. We also had some fried calamri - with a spicy kick. I had Limonchella for desert - fermented lemon alcohol. Oh so good. I kept ordering these in Italy and I got hooked. Frances May in "Under the Tuscan Sun" had a shot of Limonchella during her beach-side meal in Positano. It's too sweet for most folks, including my dad and Mark. But I enjoy the citrus sweetness offset by the tang from the sour lemon rinds.

Map this on Platial

Fina Estampa

Our first stop was Fina Estampa at the corner of Geary and Van Ness. It's across the street from Tommy's Joint...if that helps.

I felt normal after dinner at this fab Peruvian restuarant. We caught them a few minutes before closing and they were happy to seat us.

Yummy carbs - we had these tasty garnishes with our bread....my favorite was the green-garlic stuff - savory, buttery with a nice garlic bite.

Shellfish I can trust! Yeah! I've had oysters and mussels in the Midwest...but my dad's paranoia about fish freshness must have seeped into my own palate. Grrr. No worries - Kansas oysters were fine...but California seafood is totally in class of it's own. This is Choros a la Criolla: the mussels were marinated in lemon juice and served chilly with onion, tomatoes and cilantro. It's a small dish but very satsifying - everything just popped in a good way in my mouth - especially with the cilantro bringing out that fresh mussel flavor.

Map this on Platial

Cafe Iberico

        Good times and good memories...
For me, a tapas meal meant sharing yummy bites and funny stories...washed down with a pitcher of fruit wine. In San Francisco, we lingered over steamed mussels, sausages and a couple pitchers of sangria. In D.C.'s Chinatown we stumbled on a tapas resturant, next to an Irish pub. In grad school, we took our econ professors out to this tapas restaurant in downtown Chicago.

My dad adored this place. We took him here for Father's Day. We loves the chorizo and other meats.

Map this on Platial

Naan'n'Curry in the Tenderloin

A 2:00 AM snack at Naan'n'Curry on Eddy.

2:00 AM felt like I was in the middle of my work day. So I wanted lunch. A cab driver told us Naan'n'Curry was just around the corner - so we sent Susan and Tom home....and then we indulged my chicken tikki masala craving. Oh yeah! Complex, hearty, almost cheesy but so much more...I love that tikki sauce. We also did veggie samosas.

Fondue in Paris...our global journalism crew ate here on our last night together in Paris.

We got vin blanche and vin rouge served in baby bottles. Funny and comforting....

And when it comes to fondue...You have focus on twirling just the right amount of formage on to your bread piece. You also have to make sure your meat is as cooked as you want it to be...

Map this on Platial

Bix

This is Bix - it's in an alley and thankfully the cab driver knew what we what and where we were talking about. Inside Bix - it has a swanky speakeasy-vibe - 1920's art decor and a live band playing loud jaz music. The food was decadent and scrumptious.

We did hor d'oeuvres in a tapas fashion...we tried the "Tuna Tartare on Olive Toasts". I love the fresh fish in San Francisco. Heaven.

We also tried: "Kampachi Crudo with Blood Orange, Fennel, Daikon Sprouts and Fiordolio Olive Oil."

I first heard about crudo in a Vogue article by Jeffrey Steingarten. He's a brilliant gourmand and he has such an evocative writing style...I also read about this Italian-style of doing raw fish in the NY Times...I think. This SF Gate article has a great way of explaining crudo: "...crudo is shorthand for any kind of raw fish -- chopped tartares, marinated ceviches, sliced sashimis, paper-thin carpaccios. The stumpy word itself conveys little about the silky, sensual feel of eating a raw scallop glistening with olive oil and shivering under sheer fennel slices and bits of orange...". And in this NY Post article...a chef has another way of explaining crudo: "Crudo is basically Italian sashimi with good ingredients. Instead of wasabi, we use garlic, and instead of ginger, we use tomato."

Now, Susan said she had really good crudo at Incanto - possibly better than Bix...As for myself, this first taste of crudo was delightful. Again, fresh fish - slice thin and marinated lightly. It melted in my mouth and left my palate swooning. I especially liked how it finished off with the blood orange - a clean citrus tang...

We also did some sliders in a gourmet fashion - "Mini Lamb Burgers with Spicy Red Pepper Sauce". A month or two ago, I picked up the movie "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle" DVD and I still have a craving for little burger bites.

Map this on Platial

Baltimore Street Grill

The rain was so bad - we could barely see out our windows and the road in front of us.

We stopped in Cumberland, Maryland - for lunch. The town's inside the Appalachian Mountains...somewhere.

We found a lot that offered two hours of parking - free.

The menu had a "local" specialty, Maryland crabcake sandwich. So, I did the South Beach thing...and ate only the crabcakes. Yum!

Evidence of rain...It seemed like a sleepy town and the folks were nice...not exactly overjoyed to see tourists in town...But nice.

Map this on Platial

Johin Sushi

My favorite lunch spot when I worked at Reuters in London. It's a small deli with a row of stools for dining in. Most folks ordered out for take-away at lunchtime. As for myself, I loved eating there and working on postcards.

I'm grateful folks at Johin would let me special order items that are not part of their lunch specials: coconut soup and rice. The soup was so rich and the rice sopped it up nicely. At times, I would add some sushi to my lunch orders. But most of the time, I would get full on the soup and rice.

When I couldn't finish lunch, I would heated up the soup and rice separately at home. For breakfast, I would then dump both into one bowl. It's a tasty breakfast for a gal like me who doesn't have much of a sweet tooth in the morning.

Map this on Platial

La Note

La Note is always a yummy choice for breafast. The service is typically on and off. Since it's graduation time, it looks like the servers went into super-charming mode in order to charm some nice tips from the graduates' parents. I had the cote nord: "two eggs scrambled with cream cheese over levain toast, homefries & tomatoes". I sub-ed out the cream cheese with goat cheese. The eggs melted in my mouth and the bread was still crunchy after being soaked with cheese. I also had a bite of Mark's sausages from his cote sud: "two eggs sunny-side-up, spicy merguez sausage, homefries & toast". The sausage reminded me of the ones my parents like in a Filipino breakfast.

Map this on Platial

La Parilla

I did lunch at this South American restuarant with co-workers at the News Center on my second day at work. It's still my first food love in Lawrence. Pozole is supposed to be a regional specialty in Zihua and I was kinda bummed about missing it on our honeymoon. I got a second chance at La Parilla with this Pork Pozole. It's such a rich and filling dish and I couldn't finish it. The meat tasted succulent and each bite made my mouth water for more despite my stomach's protests.

Aladdin's Cafe

I had kifta kabobs at Aladdin's Cafe in Lawrence. I was impressed that it did a nice pace of business on New Year's Day when other spots have closed up for the holiday. It was a pleasure to dig into this ground beef delight. Mark and I brainstormed ideas on how to replicate the rice - butter, saffron, curry, something? This dish reminded me of my first taste of koufta sandwiches in Paris. Just around the corner from our flat in the 3rd arrondisment, a Lebanese food stand kept serving food past 1 AM. It was the perfect antidote to jet lag. I ended up boxing Mark's dish, the kifta meal, simply because I loved the sauce - savory blend of butter-like herbs and broth.

During my DC quarter, I always had a craving for koufta and now I think I found a new place in Kansas to cure my new craving for kifta. It's probably a good thing I didn't give up meat for the New Year.

Map this on Platial

Akbar

t's part of a chain of Indian restaurants in the LA area.

In Pasadena, we had friendly and helpful service plus a side of nice chill and romantic ambience.

The chill atmosphere, the ice water and the Cab were soothing counterparts to the exploding spices of the house chutney. Granted, I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to spicy foods....but Mark said he found them to be a hot as well. A second opinion always helps...

First impressions...

Some restaurant folks just take lighting for granted. Our lovely server found the candlelight on it's last wick-legs....so she swapped it out for a nicer and brighter one. Typically, I have to ask - but she figure - a cute couple, such as ourselves, waltz into a place for dinner - might as well make it a cozy experience.

The mood lighting and the welcoming staff inspired me to order some wine with my meal. I almost always order the chicken tikka masala on my first visit - it's like my litmus test for Indian restaurants. I asked the server what type of wine she recomended for the chicken dish. She pointed out that a red would suit the sauce. So, she gave me a choice between a Zin and a Robert Keenan Cabernet Sauvignon. I thought the Zin would be too light for me...so I went with the Cab.

Yum! The Robert Keenan Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa had a lovely buttery aftertaste. It satisfied my craving for something rich and hearty.

Before the entrees...
We split the Aloo Aam Tikka ("Potato patties stuffed with seasoned green peas and spices, served with homemade mango chutney")and some Papadum ("Tandoori baked lentil wafer").

These selections disappointed me. I didn't find any green peas in the potato dish....

"They're kind like Indian tater tots," I told Mark.

And there was something wrong with the papadum. We both agreed the wafers were too chewy. At other Indian establishments - from DC to Paris to London - the papadum always had a nice crisp texture. When you bit into one - it flakes nicely into your both - like a chip. The ones in Pasadena tasted like they were microwaved.

The only saving grace was the chutney, served on the side. I dipped a bit of the potato dish and the papadum into the mint chutney and felt an explosion in my mouth. I went through an entire glass of water - plus a third of Mark's glass.

The good stuff...

The menu calls the chicken tikka masala the "house favorite." It's tandoori grilled chicken swimming in a yummy tomato sauce. I love it when the sauce is creamy, rich and with a cheesy overtone. Akbar read my mind, when it came to the sauce. It took a lot of self-control to manage my rice intake with this dish....simply because it makes you want to drown the rice in the sauce.

(The Lamb Vindaloo is the middle the dish and the Chicken Tikka Masala is all the way on the right.)

Mark had the Lamb Vindaloo, which is "prepared in a tangy tomato based sauce with potatoes." Another yummy choice.

If you're watching your carbs...like for the South Beach bit...you should make a choice between Naan or rice. We went with rice. I know it's traditional to have the tandoori baked bread along with the rice, as your sides for Indian entrees....but you really don't need it. In fact, we couldn't finish our meals and now we have leftovers.

Overall, I'm happy with Akbar - a satsifying meal and a hospitality made this dining experience one worth repeating.

Map this on Platial

Rosa's Mexican Restaurant

Several local folks, including our morning show director, recommended Rosa's for Mexican food. My hubby and I headed there for lunch. We survived a construction-work obstacle course on SE California Avenue in order to get to Rosa's. Our car blocked the northbound traffic as we attempted to play "Frogger" through the opposite lane of traffic and into Rosa's parking lot. I think it was worth it.

I ordered the Torta Combo with carnitas. I've tried two other Mexican restaurants in Topeka and both disappointed me with their dry and stringy carnitas dishes. Rosa's Torta had succulent pork pieces marinated in savory sauce with a touch of citrus goodness - laid out on a toasty bun. I also enjoyed the fried potatoes with the extra guacamole. Then our server asked if we had room for dessert. We said maybe and he brought out sopapillas. I usually want to share my dessert but this was one of the few times I could finish up my own serving of sopapillas - drizzled with honey and cinnamon. After a quick check of the tab - it looks like the sopapillas were on the house. Sweet.

Map this on Platial

Seabrook Tavern

Speaking of food ... I went over to Seabrook Tavern on 21st for lunch yesterday.

Friendly folks serving up greasy American burgers and sandwiches. Seabrook's is for people willing to ignore the diet and settle down for some classic meaty meals. And there must be something healthy about the homemade potato chips. (I hope) ... maybe a basket of chips lack the same mix of synthetic ingredients, MSG and whatever else is tossed into name brand chips. Maybe. Our dining party consisted of my hubby and myself - so we passed on the mega "Specks Burger". I once saw Washburn fans devour a Specks Burger a few months ago. It looked like a burger that demanded respect and a hearty appetite.

I had the 1/4 lb House Burger - with American cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms heaped on top that yummy patty. I also got a half order of deep-fried mushrooms - tasty, with a slightly sweet batter.
I ended up waddling home.

Map this on Platial
We stopped at Frisch's Big Boy. In Diamond Bar, I'm used to calling it Bob's Big Boy....I had a tasty patty melt and the server recomended a butterfinger cheesecake.

The Dumping House next to the Phoenix

We checked out the Phoenix in Chicago's Chinatown (more or less, south of downtown). On Debra's recomendation - we headed to the Phoenix for dim sum. Since this was the same day as the Chinese New Year Parade, we had quite a wait at the restuarant. Luckily, the Dumpling House served the Phoenix dim sum, without the cart service. For some reason - I missed the carts and the adventure of flagging down the cart with something yummy. I also had a craving for chicken feet...and I got that taken care of...

Good food, but well, it was busy and the service reflected that....

Map this on Platial

Tony Cheng's Seafood Restaurant and his Mongolian Barbecue

DC's Chinatown is about a half-a-block long. We found spot that had dim sum and service with a smile....this is rare for us. After our last experience with dim sum in London's Chinatown....we're not use to good-old fashioned customer service.

Tony Cheng's Seafood Restaurant (second floor) and his Mongolian Barbecue (first floor) had a dim sum menu - the cart service was only for the weekends. I think we were both surprised when the waitress was actually concerned about us having to wait for our dumplings to be steamed. Imagine. Back in London - at Aroma - the waitress couldn't wait for us to leave :P. Apparently, there was a big group waiting for our table and the servers let us know we were holding up business.

Back in DC's Chinatown, the waitress was sweet - kept us inform on the progress of our dim sum selections and totally took care of us... The dim sum....it was edible. I suppose I'm a bit spoiled - the Chinese restaurants in San Francisco and Oakland had tasty dim sum....At Tony Cheng's - we had the shrimp dumplings, shrimp balls, shrimp and pork shui mai, steamed pork buns and egg custard tarts. I was a bit disappointed about getting our egg custards with the main course - I love how the crust flakes in your mouth right after they're whipped out of the oven. But according to our waitress - they take a long time to prepare and she recomended ordering our desert at the same time as our lunch. The steamed shrimp ball had a fishy - icky taste. And of course, I bit into the shu mai, right after it was served - steaming hot....I had to do one of those gasping for cool air bits at the table. Really attractive stuff. Overall, the food was passable - not remarkable....I suppose the only reason we would come back is because we felt welcomed and were treated nicely. Couldn't say the same about the Chinatown joints in London.

.I enjoy simple flavors in beer. I visited a few breweries that have those flavors on draft. Granite City Brewery. It's by the Kansas Speedway.

I love a bar that offers samples when I can't settle on a pint. On our way back from KCI, we stopped here for lunch. I had a little shot of the Brother Benedict's Mai Bock and my honey tasted the Duke IPA. Then we ended up switching orders for the pint. I wasn't in the mood for hearty bock and the IPA felt cleaner on my palate. The folks at the bar were friendly and they sounded optimistic about the Royals game that afternoon.

Map this on Platial

Ole Tapas

Earlier this month, this city girl went back to her roots last night with some tasty dishes at Ole Tapas in Lawrence. We started off with an assortment of crostini. This one is topped off with white anchovies. OK - I typically don't order anchovies...but I remember having white anchovies as a starter dish with Susan and Tom at the Blue Plate in San Francisco. When served up with olive oil - the white anchovies had a lovely smoky flavor. Not too fishy. I wasn't disappointed with my crostini at Ole Tapas - a clean flavor, with smoky tones. Biting into the crunchy white bread and the fleshy fish became a delicious blend of textures and hearty flavors in my mouth.
We also had the house meatballs - in a creamy saffron sauce. Yummy! The meatballs were served up with some yummy herbs and paired nicely with the cream sauce.

Map this on Platial

Tropika

The first Maylasian restaurant to open in Orange County.

Update: my neighbors and I finally went to Tropika last month and enjoyed the food immensely. We had the Pangan Seabass with minced shallots, red chili & lemon sauce wrapped in banana leaf ($22 for whole fish), Roti Prata (crispy Indian style bread served with curry sauce), Mango Salad, Pineapple Curry Prawns, Potato Curry Chicken, Malay Sizzling Beef, Malay Peanut Crepe (crispy pancake stuffed with ground peanuts), and Mango and Coconut Puddings. Desserts were on the house - thanks to Daniel, owner of the restaurant and also our neighbor. We couldn't get enough of the Pangan Seabass and Roti Prata - highly recommended!

Map this on Platial

Aureole at Mandalay Bay

An amazing wine bar/restaurant from the culinary genuis of Charlie Palmer. I only had a chance to check out the wine bar - but it was still an amazing experience.

According to the web site, the tower is kept at 55-degrees F and 70% humidity. We watched the wine angels, clad in black, hook up to harnesses. The flew-up the tower and grabbed bottles for their guests. The web site said the tower’s designer created this process based on the Mission Impossible Scene. In the first Vegas episode for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, I watched Ted Allen moonlighting as a wine angel.

The bartender told us they mostly keep cheap red wine in the tower. He pointed out that it wouldn’t be good business to risk keeping expensive bottles up there and having a wine angel drop one of them.

Map this on Platial

Hana Zen in San Francisco

Hana Zen is at the cross streets of Cyril Magnin & Ellis Street.

We had just a lot of everything. Most of the dinner consisted of a chef’s choice of sushi and Susan and Tom’s favorite dishes.

Everyone snapped up the sashimi - fresh, delicate and well, you can’t have just one. We also made fine work of some “dragon” rolls [with the fish rolled over the seaweed and rice] and other spicy tuna offerings.

I had my first taste of Yakitori - grilled appetizers of sorts. Everytime a sever brought out a Yakitori dish - he or she urged us to eat it right away - lest it get’s cold…or something like that.

For our non-raw dishes…we had:

Lamb Yaki (the lamb meat was tender and easy to pry off the bones)

Yaki Asparagus (Grilled asparagus with Japanese mayo and tobiko - I dug the mayo…so tasty and hearty)

Scallops wrapped with bacon - oh yeah, bacon makes seafood taste good. I could not stop myself from gorging on this stuff.

Ika no Maruyaki (Grilled Whole Squid with special teriyaki sauce - also good….light and smoky)

We had more than these dishes…a lot more…but remember, I had sake. It was a miracle I could hold the camera steady. I suppose some would say it was a miracle I got the pictures off the camera after it’s been through a washing machine.

OK - this was a special dish - compliments of the chef. Everyone here loves Susan and Tom - did I mention that? So, the chef created this special sushi dish - especially for Tom. It’s not available on the menu…a few minutes after it was served - it was not available on the table. We gobbled it up. Again, that fresh - delicate - yummy

Map this on Platial

Globe Indian in Topeka

In Feb. 2006, we checked out the Globe Indian restaurant in downtown Topeka. One of the photogs said it had a great lunch buffet. This place had a great selection of dishes. Service was a bit slow for the the small population of diners - but I think that’s because they didn’t have enough waiters working. The Spinich Paneer was quite tasty. The cheese had a nice chewy texture to sop up the greens.

Then my favorite dish - Chicken Tikki Masala. It’s a great introduction entree to Indian cuisine. Not as spicy as some places…A cheesy tomatoe sauce with the marinated chicken. I loved dipping the paneer nan (cheese bread) into the sauce….and both dishes were great as microwaved leftovers.

Overall - Globe Indian is a user-friendly spot - it’s a good idea for folks who haven’t tried Indian food. It has familar flavors integrated into complicated spices. If anyone wanted to go veggie in Topeka - Globe Indian has some fantastic choices for the hippie in all of us. It’s not gourmet (at least not with the dishes I’ve tried in California or London) - but it could become comfort food for me.

Map this on Platial

Bouchon at the Venetian

I wanted to try some Thomas Keller food for a while now. My choir director adored his tasting menu at the French Laundry in Napa, a while back. Then I read about Keller’s Vegas venue, Bouchon, in Anthony Bourdain’s book, The Nasty Bits. Bourdain was humbled by Keller’s technique and envious of his fries. Since I visit Sin City often, I figured I could fit in visit to this French bistro inside the Venetian.

As a Christmas present, Mark took me on a date to Bouchon.

It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had in Vegas.

Our dinner had elegant and satisfying flavors plus good, knowledgeable service. This is Mark’s sauteed gnocchi. Now, I’m used to having the potato dumplings swimming a savory sauce. Bouchon serves up the gnocchi practically naked, save the ragoût of vegetables. After this meal, we learned that gnocchi didn’t need to be drowned in sauce when it’s cooked perfectly. It had this hearty roasted flavor that’s satisfying to any palate.

We started off with fresh oysters from California and Oregon. I’m always taking advantage of fresh shellfish when I’m on the West Coast. Since I’m stuck in a land-locked state, I often crave the bright, chilled flavors of raw oysters

Map this on Platial
Lucca Cafe & Market

The story on Lucca is Corona del Mar residents, Cathy and Elliot Pavlos, wanted to share their love of food and cooking that is inspired by Cathy's grandmother's cooking and her favorite restaurants in Italy, France and Greece. Lucca serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in an upscale yet casual setting with art-inspired decor. Lucca uses only fresh, quality ingredients, including local, seasonal produce and many organic products. They serve bread from La Brea and Buona Forchetta Bakeries, as well as Lavazza Coffee. The restaurant also has more than 30 wines by the glass.

The lunch menu has a selection of pasta, including Penne with Grilled Asparagus and Leeks, and Linguine with Shrimp Diavolo. Lucca's house specialties, include Ravioloni Aperti (a large, single open ravioli stuffed with grilled chicken and spinach in a pesto sauce with a light touch of bechamel, and dusted with Parmesano Reggiano), Lasagne Vegetale (Vegetarian Lasagna filled with Zucchini, Eggplant and Spinach, light fresh herbed ricotta filling and marinara sauce), and Lasagne Bolognese (the chef's family recipe; a traditional Meat Lasagna with a light bechamel sauce.)

Dinner is more European-bistro like, where they serve small plates (about half the portion you'd get in another restaurant) that you can share with others. The food is high-quality and simple. The salmon is wild, the tri-tip is certified Angus, most of the fruits and vegetables are organic and the scallops are from New England.

Map this on Platial

El Charro - Yummy Mexican Food!

We decided to try out El Charro on Fairlawn Road. A football match played on the television set and tables were crowded with families and double dates. Cozy, but not loud. I ordered the 3 tacos entree with a few bottles of Dos Equis. My tacos were loaded with chroizo, carne asada and carnitas. The tomatillo sauce burnt my lips off...painful, but a tasty burn. The chroizo tasted spicy and crispy. The carnitas were too dry and stringy for my taste. My favorite taco was the carne asada with the meat all smoky, juicy and a little greasy.

Map this on Platial

Frances O'Dooley's Irish Pub

O'Dooley's features live Irish music on Fridays... and the crowd joins in with hoots, refrains and to-the-beat clapping. It sounded like the "Irish Rebel" indulged in some American pub tunes as well. I ordered Guinness for my appetizer. For my main dish, I had an Irish Boxty with steak and mushrooms. The steak is slathered in a super-rich sauce. It's all wrapped up in a potato pancake - which helps soak up the dense flavors.

Last fall, I also enjoyed this oatmeal apple crisp while watching the Sunflower Showdown with a KU-friendly crowd.

Map this on Platial
