Veggie-friendly and very chill hippie restaurant with good food and friendly service. I went on a date here once and Linda Ronstadt sat down at the table next to me; later a friend worked here as a chef, and said she came in all the time. (That's Tucson's biggest star-sighting.)
Tags: vegetarianism, restaurants, tucson, linda ronstadt

Map this on Platial

Pima Air and Space Museum

Forget the Space part, but this is a great cold war airplane graveyard. They've got B52s, SR71s, Migs, WW2 German pulsejets... I found it extremely disturbing, in a flashing-back-to-Ronnie-Reagan-about-to-cause-the-world-to-end kind of way, but it's worth checking out. You can get a tour of the boneyard (the "AMARC") at the Davis Monthan Air Force Base, which I highly recommend.
Tags: planes, cold war, aerospace

Map this on Platial
Drive out West on Speedway until it starts meandering; pass any slow drivers; put the top down if you've got a convertible. The route's a little scary in the daytime, but the view, night or day, is fantabulous - and once you're over the mountains, you'd never guess Tucson was 20 minutes away.

Map this on Platial

Reddington Canyon

Take Grant to East Tanque Verde, and keep on going, past where it switches over to dirt, past the cattle guards, then up about half a mile. Park, and follow the trails on the South down into the canyon. You'll encounter a surprising number of naked (and possibly aroused) men (and the occasional woman), but hike upstream up the canyon, and you'll be rewarded with otherworldly scenery. Usually, in Springtime, there's chilly flowing water carrying snowmelt. You might see the occasional free-range cow, too.
Tags: hiking, naturism

Map this on Platial

Mount Lemmon, Catalina Highway

Take Grant East to Tanque Verde, then turn left onto the Catalina Highway, and take it all the way. You'll see the saguaros give way to cottonwood-filled riverbeds as you gain altitude (you start at about 2700 feet), then the scrub will get replaced by pine and aspen forest as you approach 8000 feet. Check out the ski lift at the top; at the very peak you can see a couple observatories, and Biosphere 2 off to the North. We caught a horned toad last time. Don't ride your brakes on the way down, and look out for insane cyclists.
Tags: mountains, hiking, forests

Map this on Platial

P1 Kart Circuit

The most fun go-karting ever. The track is purportedly a replicea of the Suzuka Kart Circuit in Suzuka, Japan. You can rent karts, or bring your own, and we saw some hard-core shifter-karts buzzing around when we went. Watch out for that decreasing-radius turn (the fourth turn, I think), that caught out two of our team. (But not me! Zroooom!)
Tags: gokarts

Map this on Platial
