Archaeological Site of Volubilis

The Mauritanian capital, founded in the 3rd
century B.C., became an important outpost of the Roman Empire
and was graced with many fine buildings. Extensive remains of
these survive in the archaeological site, located in a fertile
agricultural area. Volubilis was later briefly to become the
capital of Idris I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who is
buried at nearby Moulay Idris. The Committee decided to
inscribe the Archaeological Site of Volubilis on the basis of
criteria (ii), (iii), (iv) and (vi), considering that this site
is an exceptionally well preserved example of a large Roman
colonial town on the fringes of the Empire.

Map this on Platial
From toddlers to octogenarians, tattoos to Tommy Bahama shirts—they’re all here. People mingle in the tiled bar and its open-air dining room overlooking the river. But no one leaves hungry (try the Sunset Seafood Platter) or thirsty (dare to finish the triple-rum Sunset Grabber). 500 West Cocoa Beach Causeway; 321/783-8485

Map this on Platial
Barcelona's Central Market, is a great place to belly up to a tapas bar and have lunch. Here is the Bar Central, where you can get a great grilled vegetable platter as well as fish and salads. Barcelona is reputed to have more than half of Spain's vegetarian restaurants, and there are no shortage of vegetables here, unlike the rest of Spain. It's only logical that water-lined Amsterdam was among the first European cities to try the urban beach concept. One of the most stylish is on the sloped roof of the Renzo Piano-designed NEMO, Amsterdam's Science and Technology Center (Oosterdok 2, 31-20-531-3233; www.e-nemo.nl). DANCE WITH GROWN-UPS

The popular nightclub Jimmy Woo's may be good times if you're 22, but anyone older might feel like a chaperone. Go instead to the Mansion (Hobbemastraat 2; 31-20-616-6664; www.the-mansion.nl), an upscale saloon that feels like a members-only club for stylish 30-somethings. Fortunately, you don't have to be a member or know one to be admitted to this three-story town house. It has an over-the-top Asian restaurant with ostrich wallpaper and mirrored tables, three cocktail bars with pretty lighting and hotshot bartenders, and a cool dance floor that vibrates with some of Europe's up-and-coming D.J.'s.

I Like Susan Mainzer: Dinner at Lucques

My lifelong friend John's girlfriend / house shopping buddy was told that I like food. And Susan knows Los Angeles like you wouldn't believe.

So John told her that I like good food. Bless her heart, she took me to the West Hollywood Foodie Altar of Lucques on a Sunday night.

In the image below we see Susan lurking in the shadows (she's kinda a behind-the-scenes type) of my dessert crepes.

I have eaten all over the world and there are three restaurants that stand head and shoulders above everything else for outright technique. I have been to many other restaurants that had vibrant flavors that blew me away, but this is my top three technique list:

These were:

1. Cafe Nora in Washington DC
2. Le Crocodile in Vancouver BC
and now Lucques.

We went on Sunday, so we had the Sunday dinner (see the web site).

I had the mussels. They were delicious, the sauce and the white beans went perfectly with the mussels. But the real technique was shown in the rillettes. The duck in the rillettes was perfectly fibrous, the accompanying greens balanced it nicely and were sparse enough not to overwhelm it. It was excellently balanced.

For us this meant:

sunday, february 4, 2007

duck rillettes with savoy cabbage,

mizuna salad and cornichon

***

mussels and clams paysanne with jamon,

green garlic, stinging nettles and white beans

or

roast leg of lamb with warm spinach salad, olives,

anchovy and fried pumpkin persillade

***

warm crepes with apple confit,

crushed almonds and crème fraîche

40 dollars per person

-------------------------------------------------

So, I was successfully food-wooed by Susan Mainzer.

Map this on Platial
NY times review, Fancy restaurants are always part theater, but some are more so. At Benares, Mr. Kochhar's new venture — with his being a TV star and the tabs at a level to preclude all but bankers and soccer players — the theatrical element is high. Perhaps that helped it win its first Michelin star this year.

A stone-clad foyer leads up a grand stairway to the restaurant itself, awash with pools with flowers floating on them. I have to admit I couldn't suppress a nostalgic twinge for the plastic seats of Hot Stuff as I was encouraged into my leather banquette.

Map this on Platial
TAMARIND

The brainchild of the chef Atul Kochhar, Tamarind was one of the first Indian restaurants in London to win a Michelin star, in 2001 (which it has retained despite Mr. Kochhar's moving on). It has a welcome station at the door, beyond which stairs take you down to the spacious yet intimate dining room, decorated with distressed mirrors and tended by a large staff in black tunics. A half-silvered two-way mirror allows you to catch shadowy glimpses of the chefs' gestures in the kitchen.

Bubble Lounge

Ideally located on a historic block of Montgomery Street close to North Beach, the Financial District, and Union Square, The Bubble Lounge is a truly unique gem among San Francisco's nightlife. A sibling to the original Bubble Lounge in the chic TriBeCa district of Manhattan, this location opened in the spring of 1998 as the first West Coast establishment to offer such an extensive selection of bubbly from around the world. This is the "ultimate champagne source" where "champagnes can be discovered and enjoyed", a perfect choice for any occasion. Since its premiere in spring of 1998, The Bubble Lounge continues to be one of the hottest night spots in all of the Bay Area for both natives and tourists, champagne connoisseurs and novices alike...

The Bubble Lounge's decadent menu is mirrored by its luxurious interior décor. The entrance leads into an extravagant main room with high ceilings and the building's original brick walls decorated with champagne collectibles and artwork. Ten inviting salons are furnished with satin couches, overstuffed chairs, rich mahogany, and marble tables - all under the soft, warm glow of candlelight. Downstairs is The Krug Room, an even more intimate space reminiscent of traditional champagne cellars with a private bar. The ambience is elegant, yet very comfortable, welcoming to a wide range of guests from the young professionals after work to the stylish and fashionable of late night.

Map this on Platial
HOT STUFF

Hot Stuff has been winning rapturous praise for nearly two decades, since the Dawood family opened it in 1988. It sits in a row of little shops on a side street in Lambeth, south of the river (where “My Beautiful Laundrette” was filmed). It's tiny — two rows of plastic tables and chairs, a kitchen at the back with hip-hop keeping the cooks lively, and a front window decorated with frosted glass flames. The air is thick with cumin and garam masala, the blend of spices endemic to Indian cuisine.

Map this on Platial
