A beautiful park with tons of trails. From the main parking lot I really enjoy taking the dogs on the North Horse Loop. There are generally fewer hikers here so it is easier to let the dogs loose. The nature center has maps of all the trails in the park, and there are many!

Map this on Platial
Under the nopo trainbridge, lies this sinking abandoned, turn of the century wooden barge. I actually don't know one bit of history on it, but it's obviously either been ship wrecked here, of was the first of a one ship boat graveyard. It is a thrilling place to risk tetnus, scurvy and radiation poisoning, all in one sitting.

Map this on Platial

Portland Farmer's Market

The central city farmer's market - runs 8:30am - 2pm Saturdays, April through December. Great local farmers and producers of everything from chocolates to cheeses, pates, and wines. Not a bad place for a morning snack, either - wood-oven asparagus pizzas, anyone?

Map this on Platial

more everyday sunshine

This is as good a place as any to start discovering one of Portland's most conceptual public art projects. Along the entire length of the streetcar line, there are fourteen motion-sensored spotlights that are triggered by pedestrians walking along the sidewalk. You must be on the same side of the street and walking in the same direction as the streetcar runs. The spotlights are attached to utility poles. The light won't come on immediately - sometimes it takes several minutes for it to fade on and slowly fade off. The spotlights illuminate things you might not normally think too much about, like a simple architectural feature, a park bench, or a patch of dirt.

When I first heard Harrell Fletcher describe his concept for the project, it went something like this: "When I was a boy, my father and I would go on walks and he would point at things that he thought were interesting. Later in my life, I studied photography, and I thought of that as a form of pointing, or saying "I find this interesting." The spotlights are intended to illuminate things that I found interesting along the streetcar line."

This public art piece makes a really fun evening walk for the curious.

Map this on Platial
Man the media in this town can't help but out-review each other. Blogs, both weeklies, the daily and the monthly magazine all have hyped this place in the span of two weeks. When we went, it was the kind of place that is cool, but makes you feel cooler and more attractive for being there. Our drinks were solid, the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable and our happy hour bites were delicious. We're excited to return and try some of the offal coming out of the kitchen.

Map this on Platial
