The Interactive Communication Technology major is an interdisciplinary program that offers study in interactive technologies exploring the impact and diversity of the computer as an interactive communication tool. This program brings together several departments (primarily Art and English) in a comprehensive approach to visual and verbal communication using computer technology as the common link. Courses examine the communication process and its elements. This combination lays a foundation for diverse experiences in thinking critically, speaking effectively and communicating visually, with an emphasis on developing conceptual, aesthetic and technical skills in the production of computer generated media.

Map this on Platial
The Institute of Design (ID) is a graduate school of design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. We are dedicated to humanizing technology and improving the process of innovation, by developing and teaching a more methodological and human-centered approach to design. While most new products and services today are created in response to technology, marketing, or design trends, leading to a dizzying array of consumer choices that complicate our lives, we believe that real innovation starts with users' needs and employs a set of reliable methods, theories and tools to create solutions to their problems.

Map this on Platial

COPENHAGEN INSTITUTE OF INTERACTION DESIGN

The Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) is a new initiative happening in Denmark. Our aim is to establish a high profile design institute that will encourage a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment – providing an international setting for new thinking in design and technology.

The structure of the institute will incorporate an integrated plan of teaching, research and consulting – all in the same building, at the same time – allowing the different areas to influence each other in their vision and philosophy. We believe there is a high demand for interaction design education worldwide and the school and research lab will provide a platform for a strong educational program and innovative research projects. We believe in new research models that interface with both academia and industry – as design is a major innovation driver towards a knowledge-based economy.

Map this on Platial

Map this on Platial

The course provides a creative and intellectually stimulating environment where students and staff can explore relationships between people, design and emerging technologies in different contexts of practice (industry, design studios, think tanks and research labs), through different design approaches (practical, experimental, conceptual and critical), and by tackling different design roles (maker, strategist and critic).

During the first year, emphasis is placed on set projects which investigate these design contexts, approaches and roles. The projects can be short workshops introducing new skills, such as electronic and software prototyping, or they can last several weeks and so allow for a more prolonged engagement with a particular perspective.

During the second year, students are expected to initiate their own projects, and to build up a body of work that reflects the professional context in which they wish to practise. Many students work closely with people outside the College, be they experts or volunteers, in order to identify hidden or neglected desires and needs, which are then reflected in design proposals for new products and services. Project outcomes are expressed through a variety of media including prototypes, simulations, animation, video and photography.

Map this on Platial

Domus Academy

Domus Academy was born in Milan in 1982 as an open project around the Italian design and fashion experience. During the years, DA also asserted its importance as a school, in the full meaning of the term: a place of post-graduate training and research laboratory on the processes of industrial creativity, on the aesthetic and consumption scenarios, on space and time relationship, on the form of public and private services and on the radical changes deriving from the diffusion of the "Web". Strongly rooted in Italy, Domus Academy works in an international perspective, in order to enrich, spread and update the design culture. Domus Academy is a real point of connection between design, fashion and management culture.

In 1994 Domus Academy was awarded to Compasso d'Oro for the career for the quality of its teaching and publishing, for its constant attention to borderline themes, from humanization of technology to exploring the relationship between design and fashion, from reflection on the sociology of design to design management and to design of services.

Map this on Platial

Dept. of Industrial Design KAIST

The main educational aim of our department can be summarized by the following.

First, through well-balanced and systematic education of humanity, science and engineering, and formative arts, students are to develop intelligence, creativity, originality, and artistic sensibility.

Second, a deep understanding of the history, nature, and scholastic phase of design is sought along with the shaping of ethical values to be responsible towards human and society.

Third, design problem solving methods are taught to develop the ability to understand the structure of design problems and solve them creatively.

Fourth, the ability to precisely present an idea through writing, drawing, and modeling is sought, as well as the ability to use computer and other digital media as a design tool.

Lastly, the ability to run and manage a design organization and its process while cooperating with professionals of other fields and users who are taking part in a product development process is fostered.

Map this on Platial
Identifies and develops design methods, techniques, and tools that merge boundaries between "user and designer", "digital and analogue", and "product and software".

The Interaction Design Lab integrates researchers from engineering, art, and design to meet design challenges of our increasingly hybrid world. These include applications of sound for users in mobile, extreme contexts, how theories and methods from visual perception sciences can be used within art and design, and issues of strategic design management and, specifically, how those issues can be communicated more effectively within and across organizations.

Our researchers embrace challenges of interaction design in the 21st century from an integrated process and product perspective. We use practical product-oriented work as a way of developing both theory and methods in the field. Our work currently focuses on design methods (design ethnography, participatory design, performance and design) for a range of contexts (inclusive design/rehabilitation technologies, soundscapes and wearables, games, and information access tools for people from oral cultures).

Our work has crossed many boundaries including international exhibitions in galleries and museums, keynote addresses, commercial contracts, innovative E-learning applications, extensive publications via journals, conferences, and edited books.

Map this on Platial

Hyper Island

Hyper Island started in 1995 when Jonathan Briggs, David Erixon and Lars Lundh met during a project involving a CD-rom production. They soon realized the increasing need of a different kind of education involving industry based learning, for the growing new media industry. The first long term program at Hyper Island started in Karlskrona 1996 with 32 students.

Since the start in 1996, the pedagogic of Hyper Island has been a true success. Today, Hyper Island runs the long term programs Digital Media (in Stockholm and Karlskrona), Interactive Art Director (Stockholm) and Business Management (Karlskrona). In total over 260 students study full time at Hyper Island each year.

Map this on Platial
