1997 Wurzburg, Germany

When I was young and in college at UT, I spent a summer abroad in Germany. I stayed at an apartment off Durrbachtal in Unterdurrbach, Germany. There was an pizza place called 'Al Capone' and a bakery next door. A church across the street woke me with bells at 5am every morning. Good times.

Laura (my roomate) and I essentially subsisted upon the local beer - Wurzburger Hofbrau - and orange Fanta, both of which we bought by the case from the liquor store down the street. The only black out to come out of this experience was when we toured the brewery, drunk... drunk... drunk!

Map this on Platial
On our way to Washington, we stopped in Astoria to tour the town that 'Goonies' was shot in. Found a gem of a place in the 'Shallon Winery.'
Stevenson, Washington and Mount Hood, Oregon

We traveled to Washington for the last leg of our honeymoon and stayed in Stevenson at the Columbia Gorge Riverside Lodge. While the view was nice, there is a train that runs right next to the lodge, so don't expect any sleep. We attempted to hike out to Mirror Lake on Mt Hood, but since it was only early May, all the roads were blocked by snow. The rest of the Columbia River Gorge was awesome though, and the many falls (like Multnomah Falls) were beautiful. Favorite beer from this area? Henry Weinhard's Blackberry Wheat.

Map this on Platial

Prague, The Czech Republic

In the end of June, Matt, Laura, and I took a trip to Prague. We stayed at some hole in the wall hostel across the river from town with a bunch of Austrailians. Pilsner Urquell, the Mucha Museum, Bohemia Bagel , the Jewish cemetary, St. Vitus' Cathedral, and good times with friends were the highlights. This is when I fell in love with Mucha and Prague in general.

I returned to Prague in the summer of 2000 with my friend Calvin. Still loved it just as much. The first three pictures are from the 2000 trip.

Map this on Platial
Crystal and I came with high expectations of going to the Georgia O'Keefe museum, but alas it was a Monday. We did eat at one of my favorite restaurants - Cafe Oasis. Another must see is the market at the square and Loretto Chapel staircase which is considered a miracle, as it was built without nails.

I stayed again in Santa Fe in 2001 when Aaron and I visited. This time we got to see the Georgia O'Keeffe museum!

Map this on Platial

Deerfield Beach, Florida

Deerfield Beach is located on the part of the Florida coastline I like to call Little New York. We've been going here once a year for a carnival glass convention. Its a pretty beach, but the real winners are the Gelato shop and Flanigan's restaurant (try the Dolphin Fingers!) both located on 2nd street. If you want to see houses and boats you will probably never be able to afford, take a boat tour of the Intercoastal Waterway - you'll get your fill of wealth and maybe see a manatee.

Map this on Platial

Edgartown - Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

In the summer of 2004, Garrett and I used a trip win and went to Martha's Vineyard. While it was a great chance for Garrett and I to get away from it all, we really weren't impressed by Martha's Vineyard. Garrett termed it "a rich people's prison." I think the real allure is that it costs so much to get out there that most people just stay on the cape. It was definately pretty, but the food wasn't all that and overall, the atmosphere was rather oppresive. We stayed at the Kelley House and while it was nice, I was glad we weren't paying because it was expensive. All in all, I tend to doubt we will return unless we won another trip.

Map this on Platial
If you want complete quiet - check out the Kiwassa Lake Bed & Breakfast - it overlooks the lake and unless you come in the height of summer when all the families are there, its quiet as a mouse!

Map this on Platial

Rocky Mountain National Park - Colorado

Garrett and I camped at RMNP for about a week in October of 2003. We went during the rut so that we could get a full experience of the area. It was a mild fall, so we were hot in our sleeping bag that was temperature rated for much colder conditions. We drove Trail Ridge Road, hiked to Moraine Park, Cub Lake, did the Bear Lake Corridor hike up to Emerald Lake and did many other unofficial hikes. Beaver Mountain and the trail to the treeline next to it was where we saw the majority of the elk herds. While coming back down from a hike at dusk, we stumbled upon some cows crossing down towards the meadow and eventually spotted the bull. Luckily, he didn't spot us - as the thought of my husband tangling with a creature that size as I watched from up in a tree wasn't very inviting.

Map this on Platial
In 2002, Garrett and I got married and took our honeymoon in Oregon. We stayed for several days in Cannon Beach. We lodged at the 'Sea Sprite Guest Lodgings'. A great place to eat in the area is Camp 18 Restaurant outside of Seaside. Its essentially a logging museaum where the food is as huge as the logs holding the place up! While in the area we also hiked Ecola State Park, which I highly reccomend. Beautiful ocean cliffs.

Map this on Platial

Fussen, Germany

My friends Matt, Rob, and I went on a little overnight trip to Fussen. Being poor college students we used the "Bayern Ticket" which allows you to ride the slow trains in Germany all weekend long for 35 DM. We visited Neuschwanstein Castle and took a 3 hour hike up to the Tegelberg Gondola. All the other signs in the area had overestimated the time it would take, so we figured that we could make the hike in 1.5 hours. The whole way we saw all these old Germans hiking down and felt that we were grossly out of shape. Come to realize once we got to the top, that they had all taken the gondola and then hiked down. Boy did we feel stupid! We had some great pike for dinner at the hotel we stayed in and then traveled to Munich the following day. Unfortunately, I think I was too drunk to take any pictures of Munich. I do remember that the city soccer team took the championship and there was a huge street party. That was an experience!

Map this on Platial

Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Brussels, Belgium

I don't really remember everyone that went on this trip, or much about the trip at all for that matter! I know we stayed at The Flying Pig (a hostel), visited the Rijksmuseum, walked by Dr. Paddo's Mushroom Shop, walked into several coffeeshops, walked the Red Light District at night, and ate at The Pancake Bakery .Our first night there we visited the Blue Velvet coffeeshop and I almost lost Matt after the hash. He stared at a statue of the Mother Mary on top of a cathedral and claimed it was talking to him. More hallucinogenic fun followed back at The Pig and essentially, we just wandered around Amsterdam lost the whole trip. There was a great drawing exhibit at the Rijksmuseum with a bunch of Albrecht Durer. Other than that, few memories and fewer pictures!

Brussels was about a four hour stop that we fanegled through our EuroPass rules. Got to see the palace and the Statue of the Pissing Boy (Manneken-Pis). Beer sucked, but then we had been drinking German beer for too long by this point in the summer!

Map this on Platial
I started visiting this park in 1993 for the annual beach clean-up. Padre Island National Seashore is "the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world" but if you've never been to the gulf coast before, don't expect a pristine blue ocean. This is a haven for wildlife, but the Gulf is also littered with oil rigs. This means lots of tar on the beach, jellyfish, seaweed, and murky bath-warm water. That being said, if seeing beautiful night skys and being able to drive for miles on the beach and see very few people is something you are interested in, I highly reccomend it. Things to watch out for - Texas size mosquitos, sand fleas, and sharks past the 3rd sand bar.

Map this on Platial

Lake George, New York

Lake George is a family destination for the summer months and has been for centuries. If you are planning on visiting in the summer, check the website above for the firework schedule, as fireworks are normally done on Thursdays. One of my favorite seasons for Lake George though is the dead of winter. Perch are abundant and the solitude of ice fishing is a welcome calm from the fake spread of a summer tourist town.

Map this on Platial

Maine Cemetery - Maine, New York

This cemetery off Rte 26 is where my grandfather is buried and other relatives from the Denton/Cupcavich side of my family. It is a beautiful cemetery that can get a little spooky with the right weather.

Map this on Platial
This is the home where my mother grew up and where my grandmother still lives. As children we roamed the forest behind the house and as he grew older, my grandfather spent much time sitting in the same woods.

Map this on Platial

Vedauwoo Recreation Area - Cheyenne, Wyoming

In a spontaneous day trip decided by Garrett, we drove from Rocky Mountain National Park to Wyoming. We found this great rec area in Medicine Bow National Forest with awesome rock formations. Still feeling the random adventure spirit, we drove down a road that became a dirt road and ended up becoming private property. Saw some prong horn antelope and finally turned around to get back on the road.

Map this on Platial

Las Vegas, Nevada

In 2003 I won a trip through Rodney Carrington to go to Vegas and roll for a million dollars. Needless to say, I didn't win, but we did have a great time. Unfortunately, my leg was in a boot from breaking it in Colorado, but I managed to hobble around. Highlights included Margaritaville, the Bellagio Fountains, and Margaritaville. Did I say Margaritaville?

Map this on Platial

Lake St. Catherine State Park - Poultney, Vermont

Lake St. Catherine is a pretty little lake located in Poultney, Vermont. During the summer my mother-in-law's side of the family meets here on weekends for cookouts and fun in the sun (when the sun chooses to grace us with it's presence!) There is a nice little beach and water shallow enough for the smallest of children. Green grass fields large enough for an impromptu soccer game or frisbee toss.

Map this on Platial

Capulin Volcano - Raton, New Mexico

Took a day trip out to the Capulin Volcano which is a dormant volcano near Raton, NM. They have mule deer in the crater and you can see for miles on the top of the rim.

If you are going to be staying in Raton, and are looking for a funky place, check out the El Portal Hotel. Its got historic rooms and may be haunted. I've heard things before in the hall and looked to find nothing.

Map this on Platial

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado

If you want to see those "wide open spaces" sunsets the West is famous for, but can't make it to the Grand Canyon - this is a close second. The sheer magnitude of the drop of the canyon is breathtaking. We camped at the bottom of the canyon after a handle gripping ride down the park road. It was a straight liquor night and much fun was had by all!

Map this on Platial
