In 1893, when the Metropolitan Park System was established, large estates lined the shores of the Mystic Lakes. In part through generous gifts of land, the eastern became part of the park system. The western shores were never acquired and were subdivided into smaller house lots. Today the Mystic Lakes are popular for freshwater swimming at Sandy Beach. Special sailing programs are available at the Tufts University Boathouse. The Upper Mystic Lake is for non-powered boats only. The Lower Mystic Lake is for power boats with no wake.
Tags: swimming, rowing, sailing, beach, lake, mystic lake, water, animal alphabet

Map this on Platial

Houghton's Pond

Twenty-four acres in size and up to 42 feet in depth, Houghtons Pond is a spring-fed kettle hole pond formed by receding glaciers approximately 10,000 years ago. The Massachuseck Indians fished the pond and hunted the surrounding lands. From the colonial period through the late 1800's, several generations of the Houghton family farmed the area.

The swimming area is supervised by DCR lifeguards from late June through Labor Day, 7 days a week. The beach has a handicapped accessible ramp which leads to the water. All park visitors must follow the directions of the lifeguard staff at all times. Failure to do so will result in removal from the park.

Berry Pond

There is a great bicycle map available from Pocket Rides showing how to get to this pond from the Ballardvale T station.

Berry Pond is the area's day use facility, and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pond has a sand beach and new washhouse with flush toilets and changing stalls set against a beautiful backdrop of trees reflected in the surface of the pond. Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Grills and picnic tables are available for anyone wishing to picnic at Berry Pond.

Lorraine Park Campground, located about 2 miles from the Headquarters on Jenkins Rd., contains 91 sizeable campsites that are spread out sufficiently to provide a real "forest" camping experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a grill, and although no electric or water hookups are available, the bathrooms do have hot water showers. Camping is offered mid-April to mid-October; office hours are from 9am-9pm.
Tags: swimming, water, swim, swimming hole, picinic, state forest, hiking, fishing, trails, showers, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, trailer, accessible beaches, accessible camping, accessible restrooms, hunting restrictions, picnicking, skiing crosscountry, r.v., walking trails, camping

Map this on Platial

"Borggaard Beach is located off Palmer St. next to the Packer Tennis Courts. It offers a sandy beach, well-defined swimming areas, restrooms, and changing and shower facilities. The waterfront is staffed with certified lifeguards. When open, it meets the local Board of Health water quality standards. During the 2006 summer beach season, we sell beach memberships that permit unlimited use of the beach during its regular hours of operation. Everyone needs to check-in. Resident and non-resident adults show their driver's licenses; walk-ins give their names to the gate attendant. All registered names are on our computerized list. As always, the beach staff is planning some great programs this summer. Once again, we offer preschool and Certified Red Cross Swim lessons this season. Our summer season runs from June 26 through Aug. 25."

Map this on Platial

Malibu Beach / Savin Hill Beach

Malibu and Savin Hill Beaches are great sandy spots for summer sunbathing. Substantial upgrades include a new ADA-compliant promenade along the beach, providing superb views of the Harbor and access to a wide section of the waterfront. A new playground, new sand, new lighting and additional landscaping add to the atmosphere at these beaches. Malibu Beach offers protected swimming and a bathhouse. Savin Hill Beach has a tot lot, baseball fields and a protected swimming area. Both beaches are owned and operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Both beaches also provide a close-up view of the Keyspan Gas Tank, one of Dorchester waterfront's most recognizable landmarks. The tank, decorated with giant rainbow-colored stripes, is the world's largest copyrighted artwork.

Map this on Platial

Revere Beach

The prize for best-known urban beach goes to Revere Beach. Ask a Bostonian if there are any city beaches, and he or she will likely mention this one. While it might be regarded as the anti-Vineyard, Revere Beach is nonetheless loads of fun, convenient for most city dwellers, and a great place to people-watch.

It's easy to find this beach. Just get on the Blue Line and follow all the people with their radios blasting merengue or hip-hop. It's a youthful beach, popular with teenagers and 20-somethings, especially those who listen to WJMN-FM. This popularity comes in part because of the long sea wall where you can sit and scope for ''hotties.'' For Boston babe watch, this is the place to go.

At a venerable 102, Revere is the oldest public beach in America. Public concerts at the bandstand and easy T access make it one of the most popular beaches in the state. Lifeguards are on duty from late June to early September. Downsides are loud noise from incoming jets, and sometimes smelly water.
Tags: beach, swimming

Map this on Platial

Wollaston Beach

This gently curving beach has all the joggers on the sea side and all the food shacks on the city side.

Wollaston Beach is best known for its jogging/bicycling trail, which runs about 2.3 miles. Caddy Park, at the southern end of the beach, has more than 15 acres of fields and a lookout tower. Moswetuset Hummock, at the beach's northern end, is a mix of woodland trails and marshland used in the 1600s as a Native American summer campsite. There are nice views of Quincy Bay and the 144-acre Squantum Marsh.

Services and facilities: Bathhouse, handicapped access, bicycling, fishing, hiking, observation tower, swimming, playground. Directions: For Caddy Park, take the Red Line to Wollaston Station, walk to Hancock Street, turn right and walk one block to Beach Street, turn left, and continue on Quincy Shore Drive. For Moswetuset Hummock, take the Red Line to North Quincy Station, transfer to No. 211 bus, exit at East Squantum Street and Quincy Shore Drive, proceed to the small wooded knoll 200 yards east.
Tags: beach, swimming

Map this on Platial

Crane Beach

Along with Castle Hill and the Crane Wildlife Refuge, Crane Beach was once part of the vast early 20th-century summer estate of Chicago industrialist Richard T. Crane, Jr. The white sands of Crane Beach stretch for miles along both sides of Castle Neck, forming one of the most picturesque swimming beaches in all of New England. Crane Beach also provides important habitat for myriad wildlife and is an important natural barrier that protects the Essex River Estuary and its inland communities.
Tags: swimming, beach

Map this on Platial

Salem Willows Park

If you ever visit Salem Massachusetts and tire of the mostly-cheesy witch-hysteria element which is so prominent around the center of town, you should go to the place that a lot of the tourists miss: the park called The Willows.
You won't find any witch-themed toys there. Instead, you'll find: "Beautiful shaded seaside grounds, scenic ocean views, public pier, bandstand for concerts, picnic areas, beaches, children's rides, activities and many eateries."...as well as the old-school classic coin-op video arcade! (my personal favorite Salem destination) They've got Pac Man, they've got Space Invaders, they've got Centipede...and many many more games from the golden age of video games, as well as around 10 pinball machines, air hockey, and a bunch of other games too. There's also a seperate building full of play-for-tickets style games like Skee Ball - fun for the whole family! Having a walk around the willow trees and out on the pier for a nice ocean view is pretty much essential as well.
Tags: willow trees, arcade, video games, ocean, park, seaside promenade

Map this on Platial

Ipswitch River

The slow moving Ipswich River winds though Bradley Palmer State Park. Occasionally, near the small bridge, there is a rope swing, which is popular with the locals, but the park officials will often take it down. Popular with canoeists, the river is usually clean and warm If you go further east on Ipswich Road, the river widens and there are more swimming opportunities. Most people park on the side of the road.

Pleasure Bay

Owned and operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, this area provides an abundance of recreation and historical learning opportunities for the visitor. Accessible from downtown, the HarborWalk extends along Pleasure Bay, with a detour to Castle Island. Pleasure Bay is a calm, enclosed lagoon with a sandy beach for swimming. Pleasure Bay is one of the most popular swimming and sunning beaches in the City. Foot showers and water fountains are located on-site. Because the bay is fully enclosed by the man-made Head Island Causeway, water and sediment quality are consistently high. The causeway located behind the beach provides a great walk way for strolling around Pleasure Bay.

Originally freestanding, Castle Island has been connected to the mainland since the 1930s, when streetcars brought bathers to Pleasure Bay. Fort Independence, located on Castle Island, is a five pointed granite structure. The current structure is the eighth fort to occupy this site and contains over 172,687 linear feet of hammered stone and was constructed under the direction of Colonel Sylvanus Thayer between 1834 and 1851. The fort is open during the summer months, and visitors can explore independently or take a free tour. The fort and the island are on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and Fort Independence is a National Historic Landmark. There are views to Logan Airport and the Harbor Islands, and visitors can observe boating activity in the Harbor. The area is excellent for jogging, walking, picnicking, biking and hiking, and there is a fishing pier and swimming area.
Tags: beach, swimming, kites, walking, sun basking, sun

Map this on Platial
This sandy beach, owned and maintained by the Commonwealth's Department of Conservation and Recreation, is one of the best swimming beaches in the area, with nearby public amenities and great views of the Harbor. New sand, new walkways, benches, lighting, shade shelters and award winning landscaping have helped to make Carson Beach a popular destination. The recently renovated Edward J. McCormack Bathhouse, one of the first facilities completed as part of the "Back to the Beaches" effort, has restrooms, changing rooms, showers, drinking water fountains, chess tables, and bocce courts. In addition, it hosts first aid and lifeguard functions. "Mother's Rest" and its fishing pier have also been rehabilitated, making for a beautiful picnic area with a fantastic view of the Harbor.

Duxbury Beach

Best beach in the Boston area, IMHO. Public parking (~$10) accessible via north tail of salt flats (via Canal St. from Rt. 139); town residents can park via south tail across an old wooden bridge. The shallow grade means you can walk forever in waist-deep water. And when the tide goes out, a huge amount of beach opens up for you. You're forced onto a relatively narrow, rocky shelf when the tide is up. There's a little snack bar by the public lot, or else check out Farfar's Danish ice cream joint further inland on St. George's St.

Map this on Platial
