Pizzaiolo

Pizzaiolo is the best eatery to open in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, which has lately emerged as the southern counterpart to North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto. If Charlie Hallowell, an eight-year veteran of Chez Panisse, served his thin-crust Neapolitan-style pizzas in a truck stop, there'd still be a line. But add a hot locale and stylish decor—Hallowell designed the interior himself, teaming up with his father-in-law to construct tables and benches from 120-year-old reclaimed Douglas fir and exposing some of the original brick—and the wait to be seated usually lasts an hour. Not than anyone's complaining. His pizzas, artfully scattered with innovative toppings (think arugula salad or truffled brandade), emerge from the 750-degree wood-burning oven blackened at the edges and perfectly chewy. Non-pizza dishes—such as farro with shrimp, arugula, and tomatoes; pork with polenta and broccoli rabe; and clams with homemade sausage, chickpeas, and kale—are equally impressive (entrées, $10–$18).

Map this on Platial

bloodsuckin' dominos pizza! 07/09, 8:15pm

ordered a pizza at 7:08. delivery guy called an confirmed address (!) at 7:29, said he was 3 min away and could i wait OUTSIDE for him. i do (!?!), for over 10 min and he doesn't come. i call him. no answer. i call the store. they ask me to wait 2 more min. i do (!??!?!). i call back. i tell them i'm not paying and they say "we're not giving you a pizza for free" (WTF!?! it's BEEN over 30 min by HER admission!). i go back upstairs at 7:50. delivery guy calls me back saying he went to the cross streets and there was no such street number--and he tells me THE WRONG cross streets (after he confirmed!). i tell him i'm not going outside again, he's coming to me. he agrees. and never shows up. i write a nasty email to customer service and call and cancel the order--and the woman says "ok" like THAT's the solution to the problem! I'M HUNGRY!!! when i rule the world, they will ALL pay...

Map this on Platial
