This jewel houses the masterworks of Dutch and Flemish painters from the 17th century, commonly called the Golden Age: Rubens, Hals, van Dyck, Vermeer and, of course, Rembrandt.

If you're planning to work your way through all the museums on this list, save this one for last. Not only is Rembrandt's enormous "The Night Watch" a transcendent experience that will cap off your world art tour, but the museum's main building is being renovated through 2008. If you're in town anyway, don't fret: The major masterpieces, including "The Night Watch," will be available for viewing in an auxiliary wing.

Map this on Platial

Plantin-Moretus House-Workshops-Museum Complex

The Plantin-Moretus Museum is a printing plant and
publishing house dating from the Renaissance and Baroque
periods. Situated in Antwerp, one of the three leading cities
of early European printing along with Paris and Venice, it is
associated with the history of the invention and spread of
typography. Its name refers to the greatest printer-publisher
of the second half of the 16th century: Christophe Plantin (c.
1520-1589). The monument is of outstanding architectural value.
It contains exhaustive evidence of the life and work of what
was the most prolific printing and publishing house in Europe
in the late 16th century. The building of the company, which
remained in activity until the 1867, contains a large
collection of old printing equipment, an extensive library,
invaluable archives and works of art, among them a painting by
Rubens. Through the publications of the Officina Plantiniana,
the Plantin-Moretus complex is a testimony to the major role
played by this important centre of 16th century European
humanism in the development of science and culture.Considered
as an integral part of the Memory of the World (UNESCO, 2001),
the Plantinian Archives, including the business archives of the
Officina, the books of commercial accounts and the
correspondence with a number of world-renowned scholars and
humanists, provide an outstanding testimony to a cultural
tradition of the first importance. As an outstanding example of
the relationship between the living environment of a family
during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the world of work and
the world of commerce, the Plantin-Moretus Complex is of
unrivalled Documentary value relating to significant periods of
European history: the Renaissance, the Baroque era and
Classicism. The Plantin-Moretus complex is tangibly associated
with ideas, beliefs, technologies and literary and artistic
    works of outstanding universal significance.

Map this on Platial
Yes, there are still museums that are like sanctuaries, frozen in time with pockets of space organized by climate and region. Taxidermy animals posed in exhibits, looped recordings of birds and mating calls and bears frozen in mid roar.

Now they're trying to appeal to a new constituency by bringing in new projects like having musicians like matmos make scores for the exhibits or having jared diamond curate an exhibit based on his book "Collapse."

Map this on Platial
World-class botanical gardens includes cactus garden, Australian garden, Japanese garden, roses, herbs, Shakespeare garden and much more. Chinese garden coming soon! The tearoom (reservations recommended) is wonderful, though not as charming as it was before Sodexho took it over. (My advice: Dim the lights! Put some music on!) Great art collection, library (for scholars) and gift shop. A wonderful way to spend a relaxing day. Visiting this convinced me that Southern California was actually a pretty place the first time I saw it over 20 years ago. Don't miss the new Children's Garden, even if you don't have kids.

"Now?" Langdon managed. "It's after midnight."
"Am I correct that you were scheduled to meet with the curator of the Louvre this evening?" Langdon felt a sudden urge of uneasiness. He and the revered curator Jacques Sauniere had been slated to meet for drinks after Langdon's lecture tonight, but Sauniere had never shown up. "Yes. How did you know that?"
"We found your name in his daily planner."
"I trust nothing is wrong?"
The agent gave dire sigh and slid a Polaroid snapshot through the narrow opening in the door.
When Langdon saw the photo, his entire body went rigid.
"This photo was taken less than an hour ago. Inside the Louvre."

Well-preserved cliff dwellings were occupied by the Salado culture during the 13th, 14th, and early
15th centuries. The people farmed in the Salt River Valley and supplemented their diet by hunting and gathering
native wildlife and plants. The Salado were fine craftsmen, producing some of the most exquisite polychrome pottery
and intricately woven textiles to be found in the Southwest. Many of these objects are on display in the Visitor

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)!

Explore more than 100,000 works of art at LACMA, the largest encyclopedic museum west of Chicago. Through its far-reaching collections, the museum is both a resource to and a reflection of the many cultural communities and heritages in Southern California.

I find the museum kind of cramped and packed in, but they've just started construction of a new building so hopefully that will help. The permanent collection is pretty good and once in a while they have good new exhibitions too.

They also have free outdoor jazz performances in the summertime as well as family activities year round.

In the movie LA Story, Steve Martin's character Harris Telemacher rollerskates through some of the permanent collection.

Map this on Platial

De Hoge Veluwe Park

De Hoge Veluwe National Park is a huge public space formerly owned by the influential Kroller-Muller family. Park goers traverse the park on white bicycles, which are owned by the park’s management and "rented" to the patrons at no charge. At points throughout De Hoge Veluwe, there are stations where people can drop off and pick up bicycles to ride around the park. One of De Hoge Veluwe's greatest assets is its art collection, housed in the Kroller-Muller Museum. The museum, and the adjoining sculpture garden, comprises a stunning compilation of great works of art, including an expansive collection of impressionist paintings.

Map this on Platial
Tropical cultures museum stuffed with artifacts from the colonial periods that made the Netherlands so well connected. Some really fascinating exhibits, they do a great job creating immersive, walk through and sit and play bits, like the mexican cafe, with wrestling on the tv, and the iranian tea house with live news on the radio, and slippers to put on.

Map this on Platial

Croxhapox

CROXHAPOX is an experimental art house and an open working place for contemporary art, situated in Ghent, Belgium.
It was created in 1990 by Hans van Heirseele, Frank Van den Eeckhout and Guido De Bruyn. Intended as a small non-commercial exhibition room, CROXHAPOX evolved through the years towards a multidisciplinary entity, with a particular vision on content and a diversified exhibition policy. Today, CROXHAPOX receives any form of contemporary art, and offers a working space for music, film, poetry and art criticism. In doing so, CROXHAPOX focuses not only on young or less reputed artists, but also aimes at throwing some light on the importance of artistic research and content.
In this way CROXHAPOX offers a large potential for experimenting. CROXHAPOX has no commercial activities, nor does it represent any artists, art disciplines or genres, and for this reason is not to be considered a gallery.

Map this on Platial
