Macau Street Restaurant

Went for a eetvery good meal at the Macau Street Restaurant with John and Susan.

We went specifically for the crab, but they were out by the time we arrived. Very good, reasonably priced Cantonese food.

Best of my menu ... the Crab and Fish Maw soup. The crab was a little fishy, but otherwise top notch.

Map this on Platial
Totally excellent.

A very nice turkish / middle eastern restaurant in Menlo Park. The restaurant staff was very attentive and provided great recommendations.

Saint Germaine with Jay

Jay and I try to go to lunch weekly. One week we went to Saint Germaine near his house in Madison Valley.

This is a french bistro with delicious, but rich, food. I opted for what must have been the richest thing on the menu - a mussel casserole with gruyere cheese. I made it half way through.

It was wonderful though. The mussels were perfectly cooked and the cheese was nicely balanced with white wine.

Much recommended.
Tags: washington, seattle, jay fienberg, madison valley, four stars

Map this on Platial

Fremont Baguette Box

Baguette Box has two locations now. Owned by a familiar acquaintance who also owns Monsoon.

I've been to this one a few times. They serve high end sandwiches with a vietnamese high-end twist. Their drunken chicken sandwiches are a must-try as well as their marinated skirt steak. But I must say the best thing on the menu is the Truffle Fries. They are totally excellent.

A great, but expensive, lunch. Two sandwiches, with one order of fries to share and a few drinks is gonna pop you for about $25.
Tags: washington, seattle, fremont, margaret, vivan lam

Map this on Platial

The Greenroom Before Seeing Porcupine Tree

One review of The Greenroom I saw somewhere on the net said that the only reason to go there was for cheap beer and to get into the concert short line.

At The Showbox, if you go and have drinks at the Greenroom before a show, they close off the bar and let you get in first.

I met up with my friend John Bruels before seeing Porcupine Tree featuring Richard Barbieri, which I wasn't expecting. I didn't even know he was in the band.

They were fairly good. One guy after the show was pretty tweaked and said the venue didn't do them justice.

I wouldn't know. I thought several of their songs were really great until the unnecessarily rocked. There were a few songs they did that were stunning and of them some necessarily rocked.

But all in all, I thought they'd build a great mood and then all of the sudden unnecessarily rock. Which I found disconcerting.

The Greenroom serves a good hamburger and has the ambiance of a moldy shoebox.
Tags: washington, bar, concert, seattle, porcupine tree, john bruels

Map this on Platial

Ototo Sushi

On the 2nd of May 2007

Went to Ototo Sushi with Vivian to try the place out. She'd been there before and reported that the staff was unskilled but the food was very good.

That highly mixed review piqued my interest so we sauntered up there last night in a state of starvation.

The have a fairly nice Sake list. Three or four Junmai Daiginjos to choose from.

We had softshell crab (spider roll) and their special Ototo roll with lobster.

We also picked up a robata plate which had some excellent bacon wrapped scallops (small), yakitori (okay), and salmon (very good).

Their Chicken Karage was not worth repeating

Their Yam tempura used North American golden yam and not the white asian yams. As a consequence, they were chewy and overly sugary.

The sushi was phenomenal though. Very nicely made, well balanced.

We'll certainly go back. We'll go Nigiri next time.
Tags: washington, japanese, sushi, seattle, vivian lam, three stars

Map this on Platial

Boulette's Larder

I had a great brunch all by my lonesome one morning in San Francisco by walking down to the Ferry Terminal and grabbing a table at Boulettes Larder.

It was phenomenal. I had their Sand Dabs which were deep fried with a spinach salad over the top. The salad included a boiled egg and a great vinaigrette.

The place usually demands that you have a reservation. So make sure you get one. I got lucky because it was April and still pretty chilly in the mornings. In the summer, I'd imagine it's impossible to get in.

You must go.
Tags: fish, san francisco, califormia, brunch boulettes larder, sand dabs

Map this on Platial

Jake's Grill

After a fairly large and intense WISER Commons meeting in Portland, I went to Jake's Grill for dinner with 17 other people. An intense meal ensued that likely scared the wait staff.

Jake's is a McCormick and Schmick holding, so they have a sort of pared down version of the Mc&Schmk menu.

We should have got a picture of the whole group, actually. I need to be better about noticing these opportunities and getting photos.

I had a very nicely done hazelnut encrusted halibut. Since we were a party of 18, it is actually impressive that food came out both promptly, at the same time and, I believe, all warm and ready to go. We were actually all gathered around a table that was probably made to seat 12. So the fact that all the plates fit was pretty impressive as well.

On a walk around downtown, I was sad to find my favorite French restaurant, Brasserie Montmartre, was closed. The internet claims it's close for renovations, but it looked utterly deserted - complete with a moldy starbucks cup in the window. Sigh.
Tags: interra, tova ramer, brad degraf, three stars, oregon, portland, jon ramer, wiser commons

Map this on Platial
William and I went to the Warehouse Restaurant after another full day of business meetings.

No one greeted us at the door. We waited about 10 minutes and were just about to leave when someone came and seated us.

For a drink, I had their Vanilla Nut, which was a Vanilla Vodka and Frangelico. Very good.

William and I both had their special, which was pasta (well cooked, but not fresh) and beef tips, asparagus (cut really really small, onions, little chunks of gorganzola and other stuff.

The pasta was pretty good.
Tags: colorado, colorado springs, the warehouse, william rowden

Map this on Platial
We were supposed to go to PF Chang's with them but since they bagged out, we got to go to O/8 up the street.

The staff was knowledgeable and fast. The food was excellent.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what I ate. I forgot to write it down and didn't have time for about a week to type this up.

So ... I very much recommend the restaurant. But I can't give specifics. Sigh.
Tags: washington, bellevue, robert anderson

Map this on Platial

The Blue Star

William and I went to check out the Blue Star on the recommendation of our colleague, Greg Mizell. It was really very good.

Set in an unassuming part of Colorado Springs (not much of Colorado Springs would be anything else, but this is very unassuming), the interior was surprisingly fashionable.

The staff was very friendly and were honestly engaging. We truly felt they would have been nice to us, even if we weren't paying customers.

I asked for a Smokey Martini, as I couldn't get one in the airport yesterday. They weren't sure what that was, so I told them. They made a very nice one. The used good scotch because of the novelty of being stumped.

My first course was the Baked Brie, black mission fig Wooton chutney and micro greens. This came with a very large chunk of Brie. William can't eat cheese, but it was phenomenal.

My second course was even better. The Tejon Tender. Char grilled, garlic leek mashers, haricot verts, blue cheese wontons and kecap demi glace. The steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The leek potatoes were also really good. And Blue Cheese wontons .... how can you go wrong?

For dessert I had an amusing event. Their Tequila Sunrise dessert was a tequila lime mousse in fillo dough and a white chocolate topping and a lime coulis. So I get it and it was really good - but weird.

So I asked the waitress what the minty taste was in my dessert. She looked horrified. The new pastry chef had apparently put the wrong coulis on. She must have asked if I was sure it was okay about 50 times.

The funny thing was, it was pretty good that way.

- Pepper Salt Crab Knuckles
- King Crab fried rice in Portuguese Sauce
- Stuff Eggplants
- Braised Enochi Mushrooms, Egg Tofu and Choi Sum

We've been to Tamarind Tree several times. On Wednesday night we went with Ken Thompson, a friend from Vancouver, and Ivy Chang, Vivian's chocolateering friend.

It was not a good experience. They were out of beef and out of several liqueurs, so about everything we tried to order was not in stock.

Then at the end, they packed up all the sides and didn't send home any of our main courses.

So we won't be headed back any time soon.

So we went and loaded up.

The menu is here.

Our take from it was the stuff squid, the spare ribs, the cognac filet mignon, a special crepe made with coconut milk, and the mustard greens with abalone mushrooms.

Monsoon is always phenomenal.

I went to the Mexican place across the street from my cousin Robert's Digipede offices on Grand in Oakland. I'm not sure of the name or the address. But ... wait, it's actually Senior Nero's. I just looked at the receipt. Of course, Platial won't let me edit it.

So now, I guess, they are going to have to change the name of the restaurant.

Food was okay. They had a nice chicken mole, but the chili relleno left much to be desired.

I think it was good for Robert to get out of the office for a bit. We had a good talk over so-so mexican food.
Tags: robert anderson, **, oakland, mexican, california, 200702

Map this on Platial

One Market: A Good Business Lunch

Today for lunch I went to One Market at ... One Market Street in San Francisco.

The food was excellent. And, even though it was a business lunch, so was the company.

I had the

NATURAL ANGUS FLAT IRON STEAK bay leaf marinated, green peppercorn sauce 19.75

accompanied by an interesting portabello mushroom gratin

For dessert I had a simple, but delicious butterscotch pudding.

All quite good.

It was also strange to go to a business lunch with Foodies. They simply don't exist in the transportation industry. So to have four sitting at the same table felt sort of like manna.

Melinda Likes Cooked Food

I try to see my friends Carolyn and Melinda whenever I'm in the Bay Area, but it seems to be working out to every four or five trips.

I've known Carolyn an impossibly long time, she's very much my sister-I-never-had. That makes Melinda the sister-in-law I never had.

This time they wanted to try Cafe Gratitude which is a raw food, vegan restaurant in Berkeley.

I had the I am Bountiful and the I am Fabulous. Both of which were very tasty.

We didn't know one key thing though, we didn't know it was a raw food restaurant. So we got our main courses and were a bit surprised. Melinda made a face that I described at the time as "A face you would recognize in a satellite photo." She was not thrilled with the raw food concept.

In fact she specifically asked our second young and monsterously sexy waitperson if the food was supposed to be cold. Much to my surprise she didn't say something like, "Yeah, uh ... duh! We're a RAW FOOD RESTAURANT!" But ... as I said ... we didn't know. Anyway Y&MSW 2 was really nice about it.

Later young and monsterously sexy waitperson three brought us nice deserts which, of course, were all raw, but there are plenty of no-bake cakes. So that was pretty tasty.

I actually quite liked my I am Fabulous. But it did feel like a salad and my brain has been trained to think of a salad as an appetizer.

So, even though Melinda wouldn't, I'd recommend Cafe Gratitude to people who fully understand that they will be getting raw vegan food.

Brunch with Jay Fienberg

On Saturday Morning, Jay and I met for brunch at 22 Doors in the Capitol Hill Neighborhood of Seattle.

The food was excellent,

My fare:

Mimosa (nicely done)
Croque Madame (somewhere between a benedict and an open faced sandwich, very delicious)
One Pancake (I needed it)

Jay:

Mushroom and Chevre Omelet (he seemed to like it)
Mimosa, Coffee

About $20 a person, half of that being the mimosa.

Good atmosphere, excellent food. We talked for over three hours, so it must be fairly inviting.
Tags: 22 doors, jay fienberg, 200702, seattle, capitol hill, brunch, ***, washington

Map this on Platial

Working Wednesday @ Tully's in Upper Queen Anne

This week's working wednesday has me at the Upper Queen Anne Tully's. Free wifi. Pretty good coffee. Lots of outlets, comfortable chairs.

Most impressive is, I've been in here all day and the place has been over 3/4 full the whole time. I'd say it seats about 50 people. Very active. Lots of people on laptops, lots of conversation.

Very cool.
Tags: seattle, queen anne, tullys, working wednesday

Map this on Platial

Top Tier Chocolates at Donnelly Chocolates in Santa Cruz

On our drive down the coast we had one mandatory stop - Donnelly Chocolates. Richard Donnelly, who turned out to be a very helpful guy, makes some pretty excellent chocolates. Especially liquid filled ones - which are pretty hard to get right.

We picked up several, including Lemoncello and a nice Single Malt. He doesn't skimp either, the single malt was full strength and not cheap. I believe a nice aged Macallan. Very smoky.

As always, the geolocator didn't do a very good job, it's actually on the southwest corner of Mission (Hwy 1) and Bay Street.

Lunch with Vivian and Julie

Our friend Julie Charles just bought a houseboat down the street from our offices. To celebrate she came to see our offices, then we at at Mc&Schmk, then went to see the new houseboat.

Julie's new place is really nice. Her only issue seems to be the big crappy Chinese restaurant nearby - they have dances that are really loud, it seems.

Her dog is also terrified of the spiral staircase and won't descend. So he's an upstairs dog now. Yes, there are logical issues with having an upstairs dog. Let's not go there right now though.
Tags: mccormick schmicks, julie charles, vivian lam, washington, seattle

Map this on Platial

Chinese New Year in an Italian Restaurant?

Vivian and I went to the seafood shop at Fisherman's Terminal and there were NO CLAMS.

It was Chinese New Year and you have to eat clams. If you don't, well, no luck for you buddy.

We wanted some luck, but our part of Seattle doesn't have any Chinese restaurants. So we ended up at Mondello to have their special seafood and linguine.

Not exactly traditional, but rules are flexible, eh?
Tags: mondello, magnolia, seattle, vivian lam, clams

Map this on Platial

Saturday Night Dinner

Vivian and I spent the last night of our weekend trip eating at Arcadia in downtown San Jose. The food was wonderful.

Our Menu looked something like this:

Vivian -

Foie Gras Sliders - Caramelized onion jus, D'Anjou Pear Chutney

Creamed Spinach

Jim -

Bloomsdale Spinach with Quail Eggs, Pancetta, Hedgehog Mushrooms

8 Oz US Kobe Beef - medium rare - with green peppercorn crème sauce

Duck fat fries

Dessert -

Vivian - lemon souffle cake kumquat reduction and candied kumquat and fresh clementine orange

Jim - rootbeer float with sassafrass ice cream.

---

The spinach salad was a welcome treat. The Quail eggs were done very nicely. Not too much salt ... although with pancetta there's always a bit of salt...

My steak was perfectly prepared, I was very surprised. Perfectly seared on all sides and a nice red all the way through the meat. The sauce was tasty, but certainly optional.

The Duck Fat Fries were .... lickable.

And the desserts were also very good. Between the Sassafras ice cream on Saturday night and the Coffee Bourbon ice cream the night before ... I'm upgrading my ice cream maker.

Certainly recommended if you are in the area.
Tags: arcadia, san jose, california, bay area, vivian lam, ****, steak, fries, ice cream, duck fat, half moon trip 2007

Map this on Platial

We didn't actually end up going to Bubbles

Bubbles was a Champagne and Caviar bar in Carmel, we stopped in but Vivian didn't want to have too much champagne and then fall asleep on the drive back to San Jose.

Their selection of caviar was okay, but not inspiring. The prices however inspired us to wait until we got home.

We don't often shy away based just on price. For what they were charging we thought we'd see more Iranian product.
Tags: half moon trip 2007, carmel, california, champagne, caviar, expensive, not worth it

Map this on Platial

Dinner at Navio

Vivian and I went to Navio for dinner after our cooking class. It was excellent! Very highly recommended.

We shared:

Crispy Pork Belly
White Bean Ragout, Périgord Truffle Sauce

Jim had the:

Covina with sunchokes and a blood orange reduction

and for Dessert

Warm Chocolate Chipotle Gratin Coffee-Bourbon Ice Cream

Vivian Had the

Poussian with Foie Gras diffusion

and for dessert

Sweet Potato Mochi with liquid chocolate center and Black Tea Ice Cream

The main courses were fantastic, but my god were the desserts even more so.

The coffee bourbon ice cream was inspirational. You'll see me trying to make it before summer hits, I'm sure. The Warm chocolate chipotle gratin was sort of like a bowl-free creme brulee with a warm chocolate cake center. It was perfectly done.
Tags: half moon trip 2007, half moon bay, california, bay area, ritz carlton, navio, *****

Map this on Platial
