Rotunda Museum

The Rotunda Museum was designed to convey William Smith’s theory; that rocks could be ordered according to the fossils they contain. We want to capture this unique aspect of the Rotunda in the redisplay – the idea that a museum could be used to illustrate new theories, the excitement generated by Smith’s presence in Scarborough and the relevance of his work today. In returning the Museum to its original role we will create a centre of geology serving the Yorkshire region.

Geology Now will bring the Rotunda Museum up to the 21st century, using multimedia to present current geological and environmental research. The Dinosaur Coast Visitor Centre will make the link between the museum and the world outside; encouraging people to visit geological sites on the coast and enabling them to identify and register their fossil finds.

The first floor gallery, with its original tiers of cases and Phillips’ Geological Section, will present Smith’s ideas, capturing the flavour of a 19th century museum. Fossil specimens from Scarborough’s Collections, which would have formed part of the original displays, will be returned to the Museum and for the first time specimens from Smith’s own collection, on loan from the Natural History Museum, London, will be displayed.

A new entrance will be created, at what is now basement level, and a lift will replace the central stair. The approach to the Museum will be landscaped to create an appropriate setting and sense of arrival as well as providing spaces for outdoor events and activities.
Tags: regeneration, museum, scarborough, geology, renaissance, yorkshire forward, urban renaissance

Map this on Platial

Come on down to the Frontenac County Schools Museum where we preserve and display a treasure trove of artefacts and photographs from the history of education and teaching in early Ontario. We have recreated a turn of the century one room school house, for those of you young at heart enough to want to go back in time! Come learn what it was really like to write on a slate or to use straight pens with ink. In the summer, daily classes at 2:00 pm. Phone 613.544.9113 for most up to date hours of operation!
Tags: museum, fun, schools

Map this on Platial

Minnesota History Center

With its breathtaking views of downtown St. Paul and the State Capitol, the Minnesota Historical Society's History Center is an architectural masterpiece made of Minnesota materials including Rockville granite and Winona limestone. With activities and exhibits for all ages, the History Center is home to an innovative museum, engaging public programs, a modern library, distinctive stores and an award-winning restaurant.

Exhibits
Explore Minnesota's past through exhibits that feature authentic historical objects, hands-on experiences and multimedia presentations. Public programs - featuring speakers, musicians and inventors, just to name a few - add a lively dimension to the exhibits.

Library
The Minnesota Historical Society has been collecting, preserving and interpreting the history of Minnesota since 1849. Today, it is the world's largest repository of Minnesota materials. Research almost any topic, uncover a house's history or trace family heritage - and that's just the beginning of the wealth of information the Library provides!

Museum Stores
The Minnesota History Center's Museum Stores feature Minnesota-themed books, children's gifts, hand-crafted jewelry, collectibles and much more. Both stores feature convenient extended hours during the winter holiday season.

Mill City Museum

An attraction for all ages, the museum chronicles the flour milling industry that dominated world flour production for roughly a half-century and fueled the growth of Minneapolis, recognized across the nation and around the world as "Mill City."

Built within the ruins of a National Historic Landmark, the Washburn A Mill, the museum will provide a multi-sensory, interactive journey. The story of flour milling - and its impact on Minneapolis, the nation and the world - comes to life in this one-of-a-kind museum.
