Second apartment in New York City. Much larger space and only one roommate. This building may have at one time in the 50s or 60s been the site of the famous Harlem collage artist Romare Bearden's first art show. Yoko Ono first showed around here in the 60s, too. We had a lot of mice because we lived above a restaurant. I once caught two on the same glue trap. The infamous "Two Potato" bar used to be right next door. It was known for its transvestite lounge acts and who knows what else. The bar was also extremely loud, frequently annoying me at 3am. I was living here when the WTC was attacked in 2001. The Archive Building, where the infamous Monica Lewinsky lives(d), is right across the street. I never ran into her, myself.
Tags: my life, residences, west village, nyc, new york, ny

Map this on Platial

WINTER LEISURE TENNIS - MON 2/20

Part of the Brooklyn Fake Olympix:
cooper park is found between the corners of
masbeth, morgan, sharon and olive streets
a bit northeast of the intersection of
bushwick and metropolitan (by the white castle)
and overlooks an old insane asylum
    it has big beautiful trees
and the courts, found on the morgan side of the park
    have no annoying nets

winter leisure tennis is played in 30's flapper formal wear
or at least some variety of country club formalwear
(dress shoes; suits for men; gowns for women)
and is played with drink in hand, in a glass

it can be played singles or doubles

and is all about the volley

the point is not to spill your drink
and if your opponent makes you run
you may call him an asshole

points are determined in this way

athletes must provide own racquets / liquor / glassware

---

upcoming

---

MON 2/20 FIRE GOLF / evening / location tba

fire golf is played for distance
    like a driving range

    which is more pretty
    (and fairly irresponsible)

balls and clubs will be provided

TUES 2/21 DRUG CHESS / evening / location tba

opponents must each be on different drugs
    alcohol does not count

TUES 2/21 EROTIC DANCING / evening / location tba

    self-explanatory

WED 2/22 PYRO (FOR ALTITUDE) / evening / location tba

this sport is quite simple and elegant
how high can you make the fire go?
    any kind of fire
    think strategically
this will be judged from a rooftop
athletes may compete from anywhere in the area
    no property damage, please

WED 2/22 PISSING CONTEST (FOR DURATION) / evening / location tba

    judged by stopwatch

WED 2/22 CAPTURE THE FLAG / evening / location tba

    American flags not acceptable
not at all the sport you imagine
    more like a scavenger hunt
to bring back the most / best corporate flags

this event is already in progress....
Tags: fun, nyc, brooklyn, art, tennis, drinking, olympix

Map this on Platial

The first time I heard Portishead

We had been secretly seeing eachother for over a year. Even though I lived 8 hours away and you were married and I had a live-in lover. We saw eachother rarely. But talked on the phone for hours at least once a week-- conversations I had a hard time explaining.
I was in NYC, your wife was out of town. We were in the bathroom and Portishead was playing. I remember being terrified that we would get caught even thought I knew it was impossible. Later on I took a cab to Union Station to catch my bus even though you gave me subway directions and told me I would be fine. I walked in the station and then walked right back out again. I bought the album as soon as I got home. I still think of you everytime I hear it even though it's 12 years later.
Tags: hopeless romantic, nyc, portishead, cab fare, too young to know better, f.

Map this on Platial

Stuck in Freight Elevator for 4 hours.

Summer time, 2001 (?), approaching midnight, Eric, Brian and Myself found ourselves in the surreal empty mirror lined ballroom in the top of the Puck building. We had come up using the freight elevator, so we descided it'd be the best way to go down as well. We re-boarded at 11:59, and during our descent, (what we can only assume was the result of an automated power switch set for midnight) the elevator stopped and the power went out. Uh oh. This is a pretty sealed up freight, no open railings to climb around, no open hatch in the ceiling. We tried to pry the doors open, no luck. We thought we'd give it some time, thought that it was a general power outage, not just the elevator. Time goes by, no change, we are getting antsy, i have a cell phone with low battery warning. I think through the short list of who would be willing to cross the east river to come rescue us. Hartman! (maybe he even owed em a favor?) ... Voice mail. Damn, "We're stuck in the freight elevator of the puck building, come in through the open door in the back near the dumpsters, we're very near the top floor. The power seems to have gone off. My battery is about to die." ... He calls back a while later and says he's on his way. An hour or so later, he calls again to say that not only is the back door locked now, but he ripped his pants climbing the fence that is also now locked. I try to convince him to talk his way past the night watchman, my phone dies, I don't know how much he heard, or what he's going to do. We are now really at his mercy. ... Another hour or so goes by (at this point it's hard to keep track) and we hear some people banging somewhere above us on the elevator shaft, yelling "is someone in there? this is the NYPD!". We are shocked, startled, and relieved After a short pause, we call back that we are down a bit lower, and that we are stuck. A minute later the doors are being pried open with some kind of crowbar, and there are no less than 8 uniformed officers of the law waiting with their arms crossed for a good explanation ... (to be continued)
Tags: stuck, stranded, elevator, manhattan, abandoned, help, puck building, summer nights, wandering, exporing, uhoh, eric, hartman, brian, nyc, freight

Map this on Platial

Art Fiend Foundation Clothing

Artist-controlled co-op with nine permanent designers. One of a kind and handmade pieces. You may pass this Lower East Side treasure and accidentally assume it’s gone out of business. But don’t be fooled—tucked behind the graffitied window is a Big City gem: an artist-controlled business that blurs the line between a commercial partnership and co-op. Seemingly removed from the fast-moving trends of the fashion world, nine members regularly usher in newly-tailored designs fresh from their local studios. Every piece has a personal flair, and whatever item you purchase is likely to come around one time only. Like the merchandise, the store has an organic feel from the unfinished wood floors to raw clothing racks made from a tree branch. The Foundation is also host to ongoing art shows with all profits going to the artists themselves.

I had great calves as a result of climbing all of those stairs and also didn't want to leave very much. My room was a box built on the roof with a deck outside. That was pretty cool, until someone broke in and then torched all of my stuff. I lost everything I owned. Oh well, it makes for a great NYC story. I still remember the great views we had and watching the sun rise over Brooklyn and the East River.
Tags: my life, residences, new york, nyc, east village, ny

Map this on Platial
Zak was doing the books for Smith and Wollensky at the time, and offered to take me out for a great fancy lunch. I showed up with my skateboard, a bit sweaty, and was seated right away, thinking he'd be right along. Older business power lunchers were checking out my style, i nibbled on an appetizer. Where the hell is Zak??!

He never showed, I lunched alone, on food that was not really within my budget, but totally enjoyed the puzzled looks on everyone's faces.
Tags: smith and wollensky, steak, power lunch, nyc, zak d

Map this on Platial
