Seeing Daniel Menche swallow a microphone

Dan Menche, a rebel skates local who used to drive us up the west hills, got into music. Not really the kind of music you normally listen to.

I saw him open for (maybe it was for Motorgoat?) some band at the XRay where he just literally screamed at full volume "GET OUT, LEAVE, GET OUT OF HERE, I'M NOT STOPPING TILL YOU ALL LEAVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!"

It worked, he (eventually) cleared the tiny tiny all ages downtown punk venue. I think most of us stuck aorund thinking it'd turn into something more 'engaging'.

The next time I saw him perform here, he swallowed a contact mic, you could hear all kinds of gurggles happening, then took another mic and started swinging it around like a lasso, faster and faster, the wind in the screen started hissing, then whistling.

Not really the kind of stuff to jam to on yer ipod, this approach to musical performance is very spiritual, and I appreciate Dan's take on things. By this time he drove a nice newish Jetta around town, and was really living by his own rules. I don't think any of the Rebel skates dudes really 'got' his music.

Years later, at Amoeba records in Berkeley, I found a cd with his name on it. I had no idea he was still doing it, let alone actually putting out media. That moment sealed in my mind that he was basically a legend.

HI - Portland, Northwest Neighborhood

        Telephone +1 (503) 241-2783
Fax +1 (503) 525-5910

Starting at $17/night

A simple hostel in a good location. It's located just northwest of downtown, about a 15 minute walk to Pioneer Square. It's also just a few blocks away from the free bus square that covers all of the downtown area. Going the other direction, it's just a few minutes away from the trendy northwest area shops (centered around 23rd Avenue, AKA "trendy-third"). There are also plenty of good bars in that area, especially on 21st Avenue.

It's plainly decorated but reasonably clean. The rooms are small with a few bunks in each room. The bunk beds are sturdy wooden ones, and there are some single beds if you arrive early enough to get one. There is a full kitchen adjacent to a small sitting area with some tables and chairs. Downstairs there is a quiet little reading area that's rarely used, so it's a good secret place to go if you want some quiet time. Out front there are some chairs and it's a nice place to sit and watch the steady stream of cars heading out to the shops and bars.

It's not what you would call a fun hostel, there may be a few people around to chat with but it's a pretty quiet place. The guests range in age greatly, and there are often at a few middle-age and even elderly hostellers.

Tip: When you're walking from the hostel towards downtown on Glisan, look for a lady with a little food stand around 9th or 10th Avenue around lunch time. She sells a homemade creation called "the whole bowl," and something you shouldn't miss.

Angry Make-Out Breaks Out @ the pAper chAse Show

6/17/06 -- I’ve seen about a million shows at The Beat Kitchen, but let’s talk about the latest live music experience from: the pAper chAse (pretentious use of letters, all theirs).

What can I say? Lots of whacked-out samples and tons of crazy singing about paranoia and fucked-up heart break by the lead singer who, with his bleached hair, looked like a little like Eminem but maybe on a little more meth. And I mean that in a good way!

I didn’t know how they were gonna pull the off the desperate eeriness of their latest CD all in one small live show, but they did.

Let’s look at the titles of tracks of their new CD “Now You Are One of Us” here, shall we?

1.its out there and its gonna get you
2. we know where you sleep
3. the kids will grow up to be assholes
4. wait until i get my hands on you
5. you will never take me alive ….
and more …

Umm, I think you get the point.

Not exactly the kind of songs you expect to bring out the romance, but that didn’t stop the two crazy kids in front of us from breaking-out into a really angry make-out that sort of turned into a slam dance as they started knocking people over while slobbering all over each other.

Until they were literally kicked out the fire exit door by one of the bouncers. While they were still totally making-out.

They didn’t even unlock lips for like, one second on their way out the door.

Let’s hear it for angry, paranoid love! Err, lust. Whatever.

Gloriously creepy about covers it all.

Good show, pAper chAse, good show.

p.s. I would be remiss to mention my favorite fellas from Minneapolis, MN opened, the OG TPC – The Plastic Constellations. Please feel free to read about their awesome show at the Empty Bottle earlier in the year, here on your fav site platial.com
