Dolphin Stadium

Home of the Dolphins and the Marlins. Here, the Marlins have won two World Series, while the Dolphins haven't won a SuperBowl since they moved from the Orange Bowl in downtown Miami. In fact, the Dolphins haven't won the SuperBowl in my lifetime.

Formerly known as Joe Robbie and Pro Players Stadium, Dolphin Stadium is a great venue for football, and while it handles baseball just fine, it's obviously not a stadium designed for baseball.

The Marlins organization and the City of Miami had talked earlier about building a new baseball stadium in downtown Miami, but I heard that the State of Florida wouldn't back the deal with state funds. As much as I would like to see the Marlins get the new stadium downtown, I have to back the governor on the decision he made. For Atlanta and Georgia it's easier....you have one team for each major sport and they're all in one city, which just happens to be the capitol and regional hub. In Florida, on the other hand, you've got multiple teams in each sport spread all over the state, and none of them are in Tallahassee. So if you help build a stadium for the Marlins, why not the D-Rays or any other pro sports team for that matter?

Enough preaching, I saw the Marlins play San Diego here one night with my sister and brother-in-law. The Padres shut them down that night (that was when the Marlins were still one of the newest teams in the Majors). They didn't get good until 1997, when they won it all. The Marlins have still never lost a post-season series.

Florida seems to have become Atlanta's trouble team. Montreal used to be the team that would beat Atlanta without mercy no matter how good the Braves played against everone else. The Marlins have now seemed to fill that role. Think about it, the Marlins have won two world series and were born into a division that the Braves have owned ever since the Marlins came into the league. So while they've never been able to win a division, they still have not been beaten in a post-season series. It's quite a coincidence that because Florida and Colorado came into the league, the Major Leagues were forced to realign divisions. Because of realignment, in order to have an even number of playoff contenders, the wild card slot had to be added. Florida has won two World Series by getting into the playoffs as a wild card team.
Tags: stadium, baseball, miami, sports, florida, dolphin, stadiums, arenas, coliseums, mlb, marlins

Map this on Platial

Lacy Park, San Marino

This is the best public park I've ever been to, period. It's small enough to let kids run wild without worrying about whether they'll ever return, but peaceful enough to feel instant relaxation. There's a wide path for bikes, scooters, etc. that surrounds a hugh manicured field. It's like having a Huntington Gardens you can play in! There's also a nice playground, tennis courts, and a small rose garden. Great place for a picnic, and in the summer there's a concert series. Warning: there's a fee for non-residents on the weekend. Also, parking can be a little tough, but it's worth it! Perfect for all ages.
Tags: gardens, walking, biking, running, relax, tennis, baseball, park, playground, fun, parks, places, recreation, lawn, pasadena, san marino

Map this on Platial

Turner Field

Home of the Braves. It was the Olympic Stadium built for the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. Ironically, baseball, which was the only Olympic event that I got to see, was played at the old AFC Stadium. Last summer, my brother-in-law took me to a game, and since his friend's grandmother knows Henry Aaron, we were somehow able to get Aaron's seats. We ended up sitting literally behind homeplate. I don't mean a couple rows back or so, I mean it was us, then the wall, then the umpire's butt. Best seats I've ever had. They played the Cubs that night, and after a rain delay of 1.5 hours with some bad lightning, they ended up winning the game.

The first game I got to see here was a playoff game against Florida in 1997. We won the game, but of course we lost that series because the Marlins went on to win their first World Series that year.

I miss the memories of A-FC Stadium, but this ballpark has better seats and is more stylish. It's truly a stadium built for baseball whereas A-FC was designed to save money by utilizing the generic, bland, coliseum style stadium for multiple sports, of course, mainly baseball and football. Ironically, Turner Field was originally that Olympic Stadium, which had that same bland coliseum shape. They just tore out some pieces in order to shape it how it is today.

A personal story

I moved to New England in the spring of 2004, and met my boyfriend not long after. We are both die-hard Red Sox fans. Imagine our excitement to receive playoff tickets that October for the ALCS at Fenway Park - Red Sox vs Yankees! Unfortunately, they ended up being for Game 3 - the infamous 19-8 beating. As we left the park, dejected, I wondered if this was always going to be my memory of Fenway.

Of course they didn't lose a game after that, broke an 86-year curse and won the World Series. What did I get? A wonderful guy, and what turned out to be the perfect memory of a magical ballpark. We might have been down, but we we were never out.

In the year of 2001, I was taken on a date to fenway park for my 27th birthday. the boy who took me was named Barry (a die hard fan of the sox). The date was just a date for me, no love connection, so the next day he asked me to pay him back for the ticket.
Angels Stadium in Anaheim

Angels Stadium has seen many incarnations. It used to house both the California Angels and the Los Angeles Rams then, after the Rams left, the centerfield seats were torn out and a rock fountain/waterfall was put up. The stadium has undergone a few renovations since then and is still a nice place for a game because of the crowd. The exterior is one of my favorites in all of baseball.
Tags: baseball, los angeles, angels, anaheim

Map this on Platial

SafeCo Field

Living in Tacoma for so many years, I saw plenty of games at SafeCo. This is one of the most beautiful, best designed ballparks in the country. The roof acts like an umbrella for the rain but you still feel like you are outside. The seats are great and the food is BY FAR the best in the Majors.

My favorite moments at the Safe:
~Watching Cal Ripken Jr play his last game in Seattle on September 10th, 2001 with my mother, just before she flew out, narrowly missing the 9/11 no-fly span.
~Watching Ichiro rack up 262 hits in one season.
~Watching Edgar Martinez play his last game.
~Seeing Bret Boone play his last game.
~Watching the Mariners win 116 games and then lose to the Yankees.
~Flying in from Phoenix (after watching the Dbax beat the Cardinals in Game 5 of the NLDS) to watch the M's beat the Indians in Game 5 of the ALDS.
Tags: baseball, seattle, safeco, mariners

Map this on Platial
PetCo Park, stupid name, beautiful ballpark...

We flew down from Seattle to watch the very first games at the park...Mariners vs Padres. The park has those things that really make baseball a fun family experience...most notably, the grass seating in center. I love grass seating, one of those things you give up after Spring Training is over, so it is nice to have it year round now.

PetCo was also the home of the first World Baseball Classic finals where Japan defeated Cuba...which I was also at.
Tags: baseball, san diego, petco, padres

Map this on Platial
The Pirates new park, which is significantly better than Three Rivers, is amazing. Right on the water, sweeping views of the Pittsburgh skyline, the bright yellow bridges, lots of history including Negro Leagues history, and now the only two-tiered MLB park...this place is quite a gem. If not for Heinz Field next door, this would be the crowning achievement of the city. I have a lot of personal ties to Pittsburgh, my family is from there, but this park made me want to move back. We flew out to watch the Mariners play the Pirates a couple years back and it was great. What an amazing place. I hope to go back soon...maybe for the 2006 All Star Game
Tags: baseball, pittsburgh, pirates, pnc

Map this on Platial
Ichiro encourages many people. A motion like a ninja, and a run. If he throws, it is called a laser beam, and If he will be a bunt hit and he will hit a home run, he will have good control of striking a ball in any direction freely. It is great. and he encourages us -- the results -- obtaining -- dividing -- coming out -- there is nothing but it. With the small thin body, the highest sport which Americans made is entered from the frontier district in Asia, and there is the figure of Ichiro who sometimes surprises even them fifty-fifty with strong large foreigner.
The spring of 2006. As a member of all JAPAN, Ichiro beat Cuba in the final game and led Japan to the world's No.1. What can he be called without calling it a great sport ninja? He is just the top star of Asia in the world of a sport.

Shea Stadium

This stadium, because of its proximity to Yankee Stadium, seems to get passed up by most baseball fans. I know I did. In three trips to NYC, I went to Yankee Stadium twice. We always flew into LaGuardia and drove by Shea and I looked at it and said...we should go...but I never did. After Piazza signed his multi-year deal with the Mets, I grew as a Met fan and became more consumed with the stadium. Watching the Mets beat the Dbax in Phoenix in 2000 and then watching the Mets get killed by the Yankees in the World Series, I decided that the next time I went to NYC, I would go. It would be 5 years later that I would finally end up at Shea. It was, fittingly, the last year Piazza would play for them. I felt so fortunate to see him play there with them.

The stadium itself, is nothing too impressive. The fans are good, especially when Pedro pitches, and the 7 ride out there gives you quite a view of the city. By far one of the stadiums left in MLB that needs to be replaced. This should come soon...but probably not soon enough.
Tags: queens, baseball, new york, mets, shea

Map this on Platial

Stadium History From MLB

        Yankee Stadium History
Only a year after they changed Baseball forever with the purchase of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees made another buy that would forever change the way the game was watched.

On February 6, 1921, the Yankees issued a press release to announce the purchase of 10 acres of property in the west Bronx. The land, purchased from the estate of William Waldorf Astor for $675,000, sat directly across the Harlem River from the Yankees' current Manhattan home, the Polo Grounds, which they shared unhappily with the landlord Giants of the National League since 1913.

Summer rainout

The only Yankees game I ever went to was in May of 1994. It was early in the season so no one really cared about the game. Good thing because we had an hour-long rain delay hiding under the bleachers. The Devils and Rangers were playing in the NHL East Division finals that same night, and all I remember were fans at the ballpark chanting, "Let's Go Devils!"

I didn't get it.
Tags: baseball, new york, yankees, yankee stadium, play ball

Map this on Platial

Fenway memories

The first time I went I was in fifth grade. I was in Boston with my parents. I remember that Todd Stottlemyre was pitching for the Blue Jays and that Clemens was pitching for the Sox. I was so psyched to see Stottlemyre because he had played some minor league ball with the AAA team in Syracuse. My last trip to Fenway was in 1998. The Sox were playing the Twins and Timmy Wake was pitching. The final score was 14-13. It's also the day I bought my first Sox hat - a cherished possession to this day.
Tags: baseball, red sox, boston, fenway park, fenway, sox

Map this on Platial

There are lots of networks to choose from, but no picnic tables or tables of any kind, so the word laptop has to be taken literally.

There's a nice play structure, a baseball field, plenty of shade, and a little kids' area. Also, sand! It's dog-friendly and there's room for flying kites and playing frisbee.
Tags: kidfriendly, nice, convenient, running, climbing, internet, baseball, park, playground, kids, dogs, dogfriendly, free wifi, fetch

Map this on Platial

Havana, Cuba

Havana (Spanish: La Habana (help·info), IPA: [la aˈβana], officially Ciudad de La Habana[1], is the capital city, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city is one of the 14 Cuban provinces. The city/province has 2.1 million inhabitants, and the urban area over 2.6 million, making Havana the largest city in both Cuba and the Caribbean region.[2] The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guasabacoa, and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
Tags: havana, spain, baseball, castro, communism, cuba, cigars, cohiba

Map this on Platial
