Houghton's Pond

Twenty-four acres in size and up to 42 feet in depth, Houghtons Pond is a spring-fed kettle hole pond formed by receding glaciers approximately 10,000 years ago. The Massachuseck Indians fished the pond and hunted the surrounding lands. From the colonial period through the late 1800's, several generations of the Houghton family farmed the area.

The swimming area is supervised by DCR lifeguards from late June through Labor Day, 7 days a week. The beach has a handicapped accessible ramp which leads to the water. All park visitors must follow the directions of the lifeguard staff at all times. Failure to do so will result in removal from the park.

The tank of this bathhouse was actually submerged in the Willamette with slats that let the river's current pass through for hygenienic purposes ("fresh water all the time!!") This became a harder selling point into the 1920s as people became a bit more aware of pollution.
Tags: willamette, river, pdx, bathhouse, portland, the oaks, historic oaks amusement park

Map this on Platial
