It's just a 1-hour boat ride out to the best marine park on Malaysia's West Coast, making it an ideal choice for a day outing. Turtle Island Park

Turtle Island Park consists of a number of uninhabited islands lying in the Sulu Sea, off the east coast of Sabah. Turtle Island, or Selingan Island, is the largest of these islands and has been developed to house the park's headquarters, a visitors' centre, basic tourist facilities and a turtle hatchery. The other islands are usually off limits to the casual visitor in order to keep the turtles' natural habitat pristine. Turtle landings usually occur after dusk. The park has a sensible policy of allowing visitors to see only one landing a night. This allows undisturbed nestings to go on throughout the night. Whilst waiting for the evening's highlight, all that is left to do is to laze on the beach at sunset or snorkel. The west side of the island is ideal for this. It's clean, quiet, and offers some interesting coral and sea life. Wander around the island and you'll be surprised at how many turtles would have landed in the last few days; their tracks, like mini-tractors, remain in the sand for days. The nearest mainland town to the park is Sandakan. Your tour operator will organise a speedboat pick-up service to and from Turtle Island. It takes about two hours to reach the islands by boat. Vacation! This was a wonderful vacation. I drew every day. I went to the beach. I spent a night in la Paz. I got to hang out with good friends. Highlights of the trip include Serena bringing her lettuce sprouts with us to La Paz to keep them watered and happy, having the hotel rooftop bar all to ourselves in La Paz, Brent's cooking, the rocky beach, making up stories about the ruins of the old cannery, and all of the hanging out. Pangkor, with its charming mix of fishing settlements and resorts, is a fascinating and convenient holiday destination. It presents the visitor with a rare chance to live near fishermen and observe their lifestyle and also to simply enjoy the fine beaches and resort amenities. The fishermen live in scattered settlements on the eastern side, facing the town of Lumut and Teluk Batik. Visitors get a chance to see some of them on the 40-minute ferry ride from Lumut as the ferry stops at the main settlements of Sungai Pinang Kecil and Sungai Pinang Besar before landing at Pangkor Town. Pangkor's two popular beach areas of Pasir Bogak and Teluk Nipah offer sun and sea enthusiasts activities like scuba-diving, snorkelling, wind-surfing and fishing. While Pasir Bogak is quite developed, Teluk Nipah still retains its kampung or village atmosphere. Teluk Ketapang or Turtle Bay still receives turtles on their egg-laying pilgrimages. I shared this small beach with these two, for a weekend many years back. Then I recently came across this horrendous item:
Sixty grey seals slaughtered on Blaskets 05-11-04

'About 60 grey seals have been culled on one of the Blasket Islands off the coast of Co Kerry. The Irish Seal Sanctuary blamed local fishermen for the slaughter of the seals. "There's only one direction the finger can be pointed at: the fishing community," said group spokesman Mr Sean Eviston, who travelled to Beginish Island off the coast of the Dingle peninsula to confirm reports of the cull. Mr Eviston said the grey seals killed were mostly "whitecoats," pups about three weeks old. He said the attackers appeared to have used several methods to kill, including gun shots, beating the animals with rocks, and driving nails into their skulls. "They ripped some of these seals open from the nape of the neck," he said. Gardaí are investigating.he Minister for the Environment, Mr Dick Roche, described the slaughter of the seals as "cruel and barbaric". He has sent a department official to the islands to investigate. The cruel and barbaric slaughter of these seals has a de-humanising effect on society. The sight of seals being bludgeoned to death is repugnant," mr Roche said. ishermen have been blamed for occasional slaughters of seals on the islands that dot the western and southern coasts of Ireland. Nobody has ever faced charges. rey seals are supposed to be a protected species under Ireland's Wildlife Act of 1976. Beginish is part of the Blasket Islands, Ireland's largest sanctuary for grey seals. The Irish Seal Sanctuary estimates that fewer than 400 grey seals are resident in the islands, down from about 2,000 a half-century ago.'

From the California State Parks website: "This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park’s trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner’s Cove, across from the campground. The park’s name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the black oystercatcher. The park includes primitive and equestrian campsites."

Sure, there are some great cafes in the town, but when the air gets thick with fumes (and it does) there's only one place to head - the beach. Several cafes here, and to be honest, one's as good as another. Prices aren't too bad - beer's cheaper than coffee, and ice-cream's a steal. Great views however you look at it - still a working port up the beach, and still the beach where Muscovites flock to spend their time and money.

Easy to find and therefore one of the most popular beaches on Vis. Rather small, but packed with a tiny beach bar, a restaurant and a beach volley field. In high season the cove gets crowded with yachts which somewhat ruins the experience. The seabed is sandy which makes it perfect for kids. To get there follow the sign on the Vis-Milna road, park at the end of the road and take a 5 minute walk down the path to the beach.

You can get there from Milna beach (just take a path that goes further south along the coast), or from Brguljac village (take a short path from the village at the end of the main road which will take you across the hill). You can get some food and drinks in the small restaurant on the beach.

Fort Worden State Park

We spent a full day here exploring the decommissioned fort that was once part of the coastal defense system. The movie An Officer and A Gentleman was filmed here, so everything feels eerily familar! We toured the Commanding Officer's House, strolled along the beaches, and ducked into the spooky abandoned gun emplacements. Kids love running around the place with a flashlight, even "big kids" like us! There are also a youth hostel and camping sites here for all you budget-minded folks.

This beautiful sandy beach on the small island of Bisevo near Vis should not be missed. Clear water and the fact that it's not too popular make it one of the best. You can get food and drinks there too. To get there take a boat trip from the island of Vis which will also take you to the famous Blue cave on the other side of Bisevo.

Beautiful midsize pebbly beach amidst nice rocky coastline, naturally clean and with plenty of shade. One of my favorites. Almost at the end of the road to the village Rukavac turn right (you'll see a sign) and after a short ride you will reach a macadam parking place. Park there and take a short walk down the path to the right.

Milna bay has a beach which is not bad at all, but the fact that it's just under the road somewhat ruins the experience plus it gets crowded easily. The good side is that you can take a 10 minute walk to the bigger and nicer beach in Zaglav.

This is an absolute must-see. The beach itself is small, pebbly and in fact not so convenient, but the entire scenery is so special and exotic it shouldn't be missed. The easy way to get there is by boat, but you can reach it on foot too. On the main road Komiza-Vis follow the signs to Marine Zemlje village (it's better to enter the village from the western road) and eventually you'll reach a small parking lot. Park there and take a path down to the cove. The path is short but quite difficult and steep (put some trekking shoes on!), but you won't be disappointed once you get down: the cove (inside a cove) is enclosed with high rocky "walls" with only a narrow entrance from the sea. On this famous beach you'll even find a small bar/restaurant.

Redang Island

Pulau Redang, located 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, is the largest of a group of nine protected islands dotting the South China Sea off the Terengganu coast. The island offers crystal clear waters and numerous dive sites for enthusiasts. Sheltered within the Pulau Redang Marine Park, the waters here are rich in marine life. At midday when sun rays penetrate the sea, brilliant hues of coral, anemones and fish can be seen. The waters around Pulau Redang also contain two historic shipwrecks: The H.M.S. Prince of Wales and H.M.S. Repulse, which sank here at the start of World War II, setting the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya. This paradise island is perfect for snorkelling, swimming, scuba-diving, jungle trekking, boating and canoeing. No fishing is allowed within a 3.2km radius of the island as Pulau Redang is gazetted as a marine park. The collection of corals and other aquatic life is also strictly prohibited. Tioman Island

About 56km off the coast of Pahang lies Tioman Island, an alluring holiday paradise in the South China Sea. Pulau Tiga

Pulau Tiga is the largest of the three islands that make up Pulau Tiga Park. Its beautiful landscape and unspoilt natural environment has attracted CBS TV Network of the USA to use this island as the main location for the popular ‘Survivor’ Programme, dubbing it the ‘Survivor Island’. This island was formed through the eruption of several mud volcanoes. The last explosion happened in 1941 and since then the volcanoes have remained relatively passive. Several small mud volcanoes spewing cool, mineral-rich mud can still be found near the summit of the island. The notion that this mineral rich mud is good for your skin makes mud-bathing a must-do activity on this island. The island’s lush green jungle serves as a soothing backdrop, while the fine, white sand beaches and the clear unpolluted water are a wonder for nature lovers. The coral reefs encircling the island are home to many species of fish and other marine life. Among the activities that await you here are diving, non-motorised water sports, trekking, bird watching and mud bathing. Cherating Beach

The old Cherating Village has a blend of the modern and traditional. A stretch of road about 1km long runs parallel to the beach, dotted with charming and comfortable chalets, many of which face the beach front. Cherating has the perfect combination of great surf, a wide stretch of white-sandy beach, a wealth of accommodation, dining choices and a classic surfers' nightlife scene. Surfers linger for days and even months in this small enclave to catch the best waves and chill out with fellow surfers, exchanging the day's conquests at one of the chic bistros or bars. In fact, "Surfers' Haven" has long been the description of old Cherating Village since the 70's. Each year, surfers from around the world return to Cherating to test out the surf and catch up with local acquaintances. Cherating beach is immaculate and breath-taking. So much so that Club Med decided to build its first Asian base right here. And surfers take the opportunity to have local friends take them through some of the most charming rural villages along the coast and soak in the gorgeous scenery along the way. Sipadan Island

The late Jacques Cousteau, the world-renowned oceanographer, described Sipadan Island as ‘an untouched piece of art’, while divers around the world voted it as one of the top five dive sites in the world. Malaysia’s only oceanic island, it is very small – only 12ha. in size. A 25-minute walk is all that is required to circle the island on foot. As an oceanic island, it rises about 700 metres from the sea floor, attracting diverse marine life from the blackness of the open sea. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, this crown jewel is a treasure trove of some of the most amazing marine animals. Declared a bird sanctuary in 1933 by the Colonial Government of North Borneo and re-gazetted in 1963 by the Malaysian Government, the dense vegetation on Sipadan Island supports a large variety of tropical birds which include sea eagles, kingfishers, sunbirds, starlings and wood pigeons. Exotic crustaceans including the amazing coconut crab roam the beaches and scurry among the undergrowth. When diving here, encounters with turtles, resident schools of jacks, bumphead parrotfish and barracudas are almost assured around the tiny coral island. Copyright © 2007 Tourism Malaysia.

If you follow a narrow concrete road that takes you from the main road near Brbinj over the hill and down to the south coast of the island you will find a very nice secluded pebbly beach. On the eastern side of the cove you will find an extra: a miniature cove with a beach - perfect for couples or families. A true hidden beach that's available by car - what's more to ask?

Definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic coast. A large sandy beach with pebbly coast, with shade available and even a nice beach bar. This place is (as expected) quite popular with the yachting people, but fortunately boats are not allowed to get too close, which makes this place great for any activity: swimming, playing games, fooling around... It can get busy around here, but since the beach is huge (for Adriatic standards), it never feels crowded. There's even a smaller and less popular beach a short walk to the south. A great place.

A special place. A rocky beach on the quiet lake Mir (the word "mir" means "peace") in the Telascica nature park on the Dugi otok island. The water is very salty, warm and kinda muddy, but nice to swim in. Can get crowded in the summer, but that should not keep you from visiting this unique place.
