The Cotton Tree

        (from Wikipedia)

The Cotton Tree is an historic symbol of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. It was planted in 1792 when a group of former American slaves, who had gained their freedom by fighting with the British in the American War of Independence, joined the settlement and gave it the name Freetown. The tree is also the site for offering prayers for peace and prosperity.
Tags: tree, beautiful, cottonwood, symbolic

Map this on Platial

American River Parkway

At the end of Arden Way, the American River Parkway nature area is easily accessible. For a small fee, there's a nice little parking lot to keep your car in that puts you right on the Jedediah Smith Rec. Trail. Theoretically, you could also park your car on a neighborhood street just a little farther away... Not that I'm suggesting that.
Anyway, this may be the best place for Sacramento area birdwatching that I've been to. The river is beautiful, and depending on the season, you can sometimes travel on foot to wooded juts of land that are islands much of the time. This is also a good place for native plant study.
In the evening, this place is thick with deer. You may even see the occasional coyote.
Tags: beautiful, birds, river, nature, flora, fauna, birdwatching, botany

Map this on Platial

The Garden Court

Saturday only, 2:00pm to 4:00pm. When the Palace Hotel opened its doors in 1875, the Garden Court was the carriage entrance to this grand hotel. A parade of famous guests visited San Francisco''s Palace and stood in awe of its magnificence. In 1906, following the earthquake, the Palace closed its doors for the first restoration. Three years later, the carriage entrance was transformed and The Garden Court was unveiled. Since its debut in 1909, The Garden Court has been recognized as one of the world''s most beautiful public spaces.
Persephone Went Back and Forth

Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Persephone was such a beautiful young woman that everyone loved her, even Hades wanted her for himself. One day, when she was collecting flowers on the plain of Enna, the earth suddenly opened and Hades rose up from the gap and abducted her. None but Zeus, and the all-seeing sun, Helios, had noticed it.

Broken-hearted, Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter until Helios revealed what had happened. Demeter was so angry that she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue much longer, Zeus sent Hermes down to Hades to make him release Persephone. Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate (or the seeds of a pomegranate, according to some sources). When she later ate of it, it bound her to underworld forever and she had to stay there one-third of the year. The other months she stayed with her mother. When Persephone was in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything grow and winter began. This myth is a symbol of the budding and dying of nature. In the Eleusinian mysteries, this happening was celebrated in honor of Demeter and Persephone, who was known in this cult as Kore.

The Romans called her Proserpine.

the Greeks knew another face of Persephone as well. She was also the terrible Queen of the dead, whose name was not safe to speak aloud, who was named simply "The Maiden". Her central myth, for all of its emotional familiarity, was also the back-story of the secret initiatory mystery rites of regeneration at Eleusis, which promised immortality to their awe-struck participants—an immortality in her world beneath the soil, feasting with the heroes beneath her dread gaze
Tags: mythology, hades, underworld, queen, winter, fertility, rebirth, beautiful, dread, motherhood, a mothers love, mourning, resurrection, pomegranate

Map this on Platial
One of the most beautiful places on earth.

I've wanted to visit ever since that day in elementary school when I saw a fantastic picture of this beautiful castle surrounded by a moat - but only at high tide.

Mark it off the list, dude. I've been there.
Tags: castle, beautiful, france, visited, europe, normandy, may2006

Map this on Platial

Aliso Peak at Seaview Park

The Aliso Peak trail is a half-mile trail that starts at Seaview Park in Laguna Hills and ends at Aliso Peak. Views of the Pacific Ocean can be seen along the entire trail.

You start on the dirt path on the south side of the park. The first quarter mile is flat and offers great views inland of Saddleback Mountain and Aliso Viejo.

Picnic tables can be found about every 100 feet - ideal spots for lunch or even a quiet place to read.

Plaques along the trail also identify the local vegetation. Look for summer holly and laurel sumac along the way.

The trail seems to end at a concrete platform. A dirt trail to the left of the platform continues toward Aliso Peak. The trail drops down a steep hill with loose rocks and dirt along this ridge. Watch your step.

After you scoot alongside a residential road and farther down the hill, you suddenly begin a short and steep climb toward Aliso Peak, which stands a not-so-towering 600 feet.

The final 20 feet to the peak is extremely steep. Hikers without hiking shoes can use the wooden steps on the right side of the trail.

Views of South Laguna to the south and Aliso Beach and the Aliso Creek Golf Course to the immediate north are unadulterated, unlike the views from other coastal bluffs that are spoiled by cell-phone towers and power lines. A bench at the peak is a perfect place to sit and soak in the views of the ocean, or cuddle up for a special moment with your hiking partner.

Time for the hard part - hiking back up 800 feet to your car.

driving thru the desert at night

Everytime i go throught the sw desert i remmber how i am infinitly connected to that dimension of weirdness. I love the mysteriousness of the desert... so desolate yet so incredibly teeming with life. Esp at night. Can be tough for the untough... can be hell for the unready. But 'tis a bit o' heaven for me. Well, at least it is in spring and autumn. I have such incredible memories of driving E to W on the 10... sunset in its goldenmost lusciousness dipping down, roosting for the night to take over... then hours later still driving, still on the 10 with everyone asleep and me on coffee or epedrine all geeked out listening to Coast To Coast.... the brightness of the luminescence of the moon casting silver shimmer all around... like living in mercury... so beautiful makes me want to live in moonlight forever... then the sun rising and the cacti peeking awake like little old mexican men.. but like little babies in the freshness of a new dawn... and i pull over for someone to take the wheel and i try to sleep but am too excited as we pull into Tombstone and i buy a big hat and skulls and a pipe made out of a bone.
Tags: desert, moon, sunset, sunrise, dawn, ephedrine, coffee, caffeine, driving, beautiful, southwest, cactus, love, romance

Map this on Platial
Duke Kahanamoku is the most famous name in surfing -- an Olympic champion, Hollywood actor and Hawaiian folk hero. He's also remembered for his grace in the water, his good humor, and his sportsmanship.

Throughout his youth, Duke strove to refine his water skills. Swimming, surfing and canoeing were his passion. When top Australian swimmers visited the islands in 1910, Duke inspected their every move. He would use what he had learned from them to perfect his swimming. Duke's aquatic skills improved to such an extent that those who saw him were astonished. Bill Rawlins, an island attorney from Yale tried to help Duke get the recognition he deserved. However, to obtain official sanction for any aquatic records, swimmers had to belong to a recognized club. So Duke and his friends organized their own club in 1911 and named it Hui Nalu (Club of the Waves).

Duke's astonishing swim times were sent to the Mainland, but they were so startling that officials refused to believe them. His supporters decided that the only thing they could do was raise money for Duke and another Hawaiian swimmer, Vincent Genoves, to travel to the Mainland to compete.

In March of 1912 Duke Kahanamoku and fellow Hawaiian Vincent Genoves were in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to compete for places on the American Olympic team. The Olympic swim trials were being held at various athletic clubs throughout the United States. On March 13th Duke had been in Chicago where he had won the 100-yard race. Now, in Pittsburgh two days later, Kahanamoku would compete in the 220-yard indoor race and Genoves in the 500-yard indoor swimming event. Unfortunately, Duke's leg would cramp when he hit the water, and he lost the race. Neither Hawaiian would win in Pittsburgh and only Kahanamoku would make the Olympic team and travel to Stockholm.

Duke, who almost slept through the 100-meter dash, and who had to convince officials to delay the race long enough for him to put on a swim suit, broke the Olympic record in July of 1912. He had been clocked at sixty-three and two-fifths seconds. Pandemonium reigned and the Hawaiian swimmer became a hero. He was now the most famous Hawaiian alive, and he had done much to publicize the islands.

On January 22, 1968 the world would bid "Aloha" to Hawaii's most famous citizen. He would be remembered as a great swimmer, surfer and all-around good guy. More than 20-years after his death memories of his achievements and affecting personable style still linger.

The Cure, America West Arena, August 18th, 1996

This is, by far, the best concert I've ever been to. The Cure had no opening bands, and they played for 3 hours straight. It was as perfect as could possibly be wished for. Their long version of "A Forest" was unbelievably amazing. It was one of those concerts where I could look around, and everyone in the place was as happy as they could possibly be. They played a LOT of their old material, as well. It was truly great. A not so great story that accompanies this concert is this one: To get tickets, I sat outside a mall for hours, starting the night before. There were about 5 people ahead of me. Because it was so damn hot outside, my friends and I took turns driving around the mall in the air conditioned car so that we wouldn't die. Anyhow, around the time the doors are about to open this hick pulls up, gives this guy that's been waiting in line some sum of money, and takes his place in line. Weird, I think. The doors finally open, we rush to the ticket counter, and this bastard isn't even buying tickets to The Cure, he's buying tickets for some goddamn country concert! AND, he's clearly a scalper. He is not just buying one, he is buying like 30, and he wants to hand-pick these seats. I was closer to murder that day than probably any moment in my entire life. Seriously. I was indescribably pissed off. Each seat that he picked to his crappy ass country concert was taking the time equivalent to a full row of Cure being wasted away. By the time I got to order my tickets, I still got floor seats, but very far in the back. Some people I knew who were waiting at another mall to get tickets that were similarly placed in line, but did not have said ticket scalper in front of them, got 2nd or 3rd row seats. I was so, very, very, very, very, very, very, very angry. It is something that can still get me extremely pissed off if I think about it for too long, and it was 10 years ago!
Tags: beautiful, concerts, phoenix, the cure, perfect, a forest, hicks, ticket scalpers, really really really hot, best concert ever

Map this on Platial

Halle Berry Wins Best Actress

2002/03/24. Halle Berry becomes the first African-American woman to receive an Academy Award for best actress and Denzel Washington becomes only the second African-American man to win in the best actor category. She received the honour in 2001 for her nuanced portrayal of Leticia Musgrove, a down-on-her-luck character in Monster's Ball (2000).

A teenage finalist in national beauty pageants, Berry worked in modeling and began acting on television in 1989. Film roles in Jungle Fever (1991), directed by Spike Lee, and in Boomerang (1992), starring Eddie Murphy, first brought her notice. She costarred with Jessica Lange in Losing Isiaiah (1995), a drama about adoption, before earning acclaim for her portrayal of film star Dorothy Dandridge, the first African American to be nominated for a best-actress Oscar, in the television film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999). That performance earned her Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Berry was also cast in action roles in X-Men (2000), Swordfish (2001), and Die Another Day (2002), an installment in the James Bond spy series. Gothika (2003) and Catwoman (2004) were the first films in which she received top billing.
Tags: star, actress, africanamerican, beautiful, academy award, best actress, leticia musgrove, monsters ball, spike lee, jungle fever, boomerang, losing isaiah, oscar

Map this on Platial

Kelly's Art Car at the UCM Museum

This art car showed up at the UCM Museum in July of 2002. Kelly Isreal is the artist who created the piece. There are thousands of little things attached to the VW! Little toy soldiers, sea shells, Mardi Gras beads, and of course bumper stickers decorate the fantastic exterior. This car won a first prize at the Houston art car parade. The car is often spotted in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The car goes through a lot of changes.

This art car is available for parades, parties and conventions. It is a great ice breaker and can be easily placed in most convention halls in the New Orleans area. Call the UCM Museum to find out more information. Call 985-892-2624.

The UCM Museum enjoys the Abita Springs Push-MO Mardi Gras parade - a week before Mardi Gras day. This parade encourages Art Cars, Art Bicycles, and Art Lawn Mowers.

On Father's Day Abita Springs has the Louisiana Bicycle Festival which prominently offers to the public, a view of many Art Bicycles, Custom Bicycles, and Vintage Bicycles!
Tags: art car, art, car, painting, collage, sculpture, mardi gras, bug, vw, awesome, cute, incredible, beautiful

Map this on Platial

Some of the Best Windsurfing in the World

Kanaha is one of the most popular international windsurfing destinations. On the beach you will find sailors from Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. While this makes rigging enriching it can be confusing on the water since it is clear some do not know the rules of the road.

The long sandy beach is backed by shady lawns and thorn dropping Kiave trees so wear sandals. The wind in the summer is mostly side-onshore and strong and steady. There is little shore break because of the reef running parallel to the beach about 800 feet from shore. In the spring and fall the wind has more ENE in it. These ENE winds produce gusty side shore winds with blasts and lulls near the beach.

Do not launch until 11AM at any of the sites in Maui. This rule was established because it is extremely difficult to see the local spear fishermen who can work the reef until 11am.

Haleakala Crater Live Camera

One of the world's most spectacular views is from the Haleakala summit. All of Maui is at your feet. Pu'u o Maui, the tallest cinder cone in the crater, is 500 feet tall from the crater's floor.

You won't be able to see anything unless it's daylight in Hawaii. The image refreshes every five minutes and the tilt and zoom are controlled by scientists at the Institute for Astronomy.

Grape Island has a lot fo amazingly beautiful plants on it. Rasberries, blueberries, grapes, and so on.

The growth is so thick that it is pretty much inpenetrable and you can't get off the well-groomed paths even if you wanted to.
Tags: flora, beautiful

Map this on Platial

Montana de Oro State Park

From the California State Parks website:
"This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park’s trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner’s Cove, across from the campground. The park’s name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the black oystercatcher. The park includes primitive and equestrian campsites."
Tags: beautiful, hiking, camping, wildlife, nature, beach

Map this on Platial

The TreeDome

Konstantin Kirsch builds living spaces out of trees. From the website:

"Trees are incredible living beings. With their roots deep in the earth, branches high in the sky, and with leaves straight to the sunlight, they stand there for decades and centuries on the same location. They are real living estates. (In German its called "Immobilien" it means not mobile) Can we learn from trees how to build houses? Can we grow houses out of trees? Yes, or better probably, because the mainstream habits are difficult to satisfy in living rooms. We must adapt a bit to the trees if we want to live with, on or in them.
Tags: treehouse, trees, unique, unusual, beautiful, interesting, ecological

Map this on Platial

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia

The First Olympic games were first held in 776 B.C. at the shrine to Zeus located in a region called Peloponnesus on the western coast of Greece. The Shrine was simple in the early years, but as time passed and more games were held there it became more and more important. It was clear to the Greek people that a temple that was fit for such a god should be built. Between 470 and 460 B.C., construction on a new temple began. The designer of this project was Libon of Elis and his masterpiece was completed in 456 B.C.

Inside this great temple was the shrine itself. Its sculpter was a man named Phidias. He had already created a forty-foot high statue of the goddess Athena for the Parthenon in Athens, and some other sculptures inside the temple. So you could say he was very skilled!

an evacuation in 1950 uncovered some of Phidias' work on the statue of Zeus. Under an early Christian Church Archeoligists found sculptor's tools, clay moulds, a pit for casting bronze, modelling plaster, and even a portion of one of the elephant's tusks which had provided the ivory for the statue.
