Berry Pond

There is a great bicycle map available from Pocket Rides showing how to get to this pond from the Ballardvale T station.

Berry Pond is the area's day use facility, and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pond has a sand beach and new washhouse with flush toilets and changing stalls set against a beautiful backdrop of trees reflected in the surface of the pond. Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Grills and picnic tables are available for anyone wishing to picnic at Berry Pond.

Lorraine Park Campground, located about 2 miles from the Headquarters on Jenkins Rd., contains 91 sizeable campsites that are spread out sufficiently to provide a real "forest" camping experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a grill, and although no electric or water hookups are available, the bathrooms do have hot water showers. Camping is offered mid-April to mid-October; office hours are from 9am-9pm.
Tags: swimming, water, swim, swimming hole, picinic, state forest, hiking, fishing, trails, showers, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, trailer, accessible beaches, accessible camping, accessible restrooms, hunting restrictions, picnicking, skiing crosscountry, r.v., walking trails, camping

Map this on Platial

Old sea kayak and modern tent - Heir Island,Roaringwater Bay

I still have this, my first and only sea kayak.

The Baidarka Explorer was designed by Derek Hutchinson. It has a very pronounced V–shaped hull and as it has a cutter bow and stern the keel extends the whole length of the waterline. This coupled with its Swedish form makes it quite a fast boat. The turned up bits on the bow and stern are Hutchinson’s interpretation of the bifurcated bows on the skin boats of the Aleutian Islands (it's Russian for 'little boat').
expedition boat designed to carry large loads. It’s very good at going from A to B in as straight a line as possible but it's not very manoeuvrable: even when edged right over in a high brace turn it doesn’t turn quickly. When loaded that deep V keel is pushed down into the water and the soft chines give it very good secondary stability. When cranked over there’s a positive feel to edging. But when empty it rides higher in the water so you’re sitting on that V shape which makes it very twitchy and the positive feel of the chines disappears. The high peak on the fore deck makes it a very easy boat to roll. This is an old design now there are more modern expedition boats around that will carry as much, are just as fast, more manoeuvrable and better behaved when empty.
But they don't look so weirdly wonderful.
I bought mine second-hand in Anglesey, and carried it back on the ferry to Dublin. Customs didn't know what to make of it: I had it slung on my shoulder and said it was hand-luggage. It's made of kevlar/carbon, super-light compared to plastic boats and is near-indestructible.
It's 20 years old this year - about a third of my age - and I want to be pushed out to sea in it when I'm dead.
Tags: camping, ireland, tent, cork, seakayak

Map this on Platial

Bommer Canyon

You can swoon over the moon and take in the view of the city lights.

Residents are invited to pitch a tent in Bommer Canyon on Saturday and Sunday.

Twice a year, the city’s Open Space Land Preserve offers family campout weekends at the old Irvine Ranch Cattle Camp in the heart of Bommer Canyon.

On Saturday and Sunday, Irvine residents may spend quality time with family and friends in a rustic setting, almost as close as their own backyard. Bommer Canyon is located off Shady Canyon, and is adjacent to the Turtle Rock Community Park and Nature Center. It’s an important preservation area for many local plants and wildlife, including several endangered species.

Equipped with a volleyball court, horseshoe pit and fire ring, Bommer Canyon provides a picturesque surrounding for family outings. According to Amy Litton, senior naturalist and lead staff/coordinator for the holiday campouts, it’s a great time to be had by all.

“We offer campers a safe, supervised experience close to home. Campers are invited to use the group barbecue (charcoal provided), participate in evening and morning hikes, create a craft, enjoy an Open Space slide show, and make S’mores by the campfire while singing campfire songs,” Litton said.

And if campers don’t want to do any of the above, they may sit back and listen to the birds or play horseshoes or volleyball.

Families may begin pitching their tents at 3 p.m. Saturday for an overnight adventure, complete with campfire songs and stories, docent-led nature walks, and a slideshow featuring native wildlife, plants and history of the camp.

Elk City Lake

The undulating grasslands and timbered valleys of the Osage Cuestas make Elk City Lake one of the most exquisite spots in Kansas. The many trails, including the nationally recognized Elk River Hiking Trail, provide spectacular vistas of the lake and wind through some of the most appealing rock formations in the state. November through March are great months to see thousands of snow geese and their greater white-fronted and Canada cousins grazing the wheat fields near the wildlife refuge. Winter woodland birds include kinglets, brown creepers, tufted titmice, white-breasted nuthatches, and Carolina chickadees. Bald eagles, common and popular winter residents, can be best viewed in the standing timber of the backwaters of the upper reaches of the lake, particularly near Card Creek campground. Look for wood ducks there also. During spring and summer watch for woodpeckers, blue jays, and flycatchers. Neotropical birds, such as indigo and painted buntings, summer tanagers, northern parula, and prothonotary warblers, nest in this area. Ducks and large flocks of American white pelicans migrate through here. The woods are inhabited by pileated woodpeckers and red-tailed hawks year-round. Gray treefrogs, collared lizards, five-lined skinks, and ringneck snakes are active in spring and summer. Deer, squirrels, rabbits, wild turkeys, gray foxes, beavers, and raccoons are sometimes seen in the early morning and evening hours.

Camping icon 95 Utility campsites, Primitive camping also.

Elk River Hiking Trail (15 miles one-way); Table Mound Hiking Trail (2.75 miles one-way); Green Thumb Nature Trail (1 mile round-trip); Post Oak Nature Trail (0.66 mile round-trip); Timber Ridge Hiking Trail (2.33 miles round-trip); Squaw Creek Multi-Use Trail (1 mile one-way).
Tags: fishing, camping, wildlife, trails, Hiking, Sking, Sailing, Mountian biking, jetboats, Pittsburg, Parsons, Cherryvale, Independence, Elk City lake

Map this on Platial

Rocky Mountain National Park - Colorado

Garrett and I camped at RMNP for about a week in October of 2003. We went during the rut so that we could get a full experience of the area. It was a mild fall, so we were hot in our sleeping bag that was temperature rated for much colder conditions. We drove Trail Ridge Road, hiked to Moraine Park, Cub Lake, did the Bear Lake Corridor hike up to Emerald Lake and did many other unofficial hikes. Beaver Mountain and the trail to the treeline next to it was where we saw the majority of the elk herds. While coming back down from a hike at dusk, we stumbled upon some cows crossing down towards the meadow and eventually spotted the bull. Luckily, he didn't spot us - as the thought of my husband tangling with a creature that size as I watched from up in a tree wasn't very inviting.
Tags: national park, colorado, rocky mountains, camping

Map this on Platial
What is progress? Progress is defined as “Movement from one member of a continuous series to the next.” (www.dictionary.com) We have chosen to take progression as our theme for our fourth Critical Massive. LARC, our new home, will bring the opportunity to start new traditions. A map is forthcoming. A guide to everything you always wanted to know about Critical Massive but were afraid to ask is available below.
Tags: bm, burningman, burning man, regional, community, art, camping

Map this on Platial

Oswald West State Park

Step out of your vehicle and into a place with natural beauty that truly inspires. Just a quarter mile from any of the parking areas to the beach, yet the rigors of everyday life are stripped away by the time your feet hit the sand. Although the walk is short, there are several different trails to the beach and lead you to the Cape Falcon overlook or to the Pacific Coast Trail. Be sure to pick up a map on the way into the park. All of the trails to the beach are through a mature forest; one trail follows the winding path of the Short Sands creek. This trail gives way to the spectacular view of the ocean and the creek meeting. This is your first glimpse of the ocean and Short Sands beach.

The beach is nestled in a cove that provides you with a feeling of total privacy. Popular with windsurfers and boogie boarders, the beach is always alive with activity. Surrounded by the mountains, the beach at Oswald West gives you a sense of being transported away from the trials of everyday life. Lose yourself; find Oswald West State Park.
Tags: park, parks, camping

Map this on Platial

InterFuse 2006

InterFuse is a yearly, three day camping oriented event held in Missouri that upholds the ideals of the Burning Man Festival. It is a Midwest Regional Burn, similar to other Regional Burns held throughout the world every year. This year's InterFuse will be held May 5-7, 2006 at Camp Ozark Avalon - located in Boonville, Missouri, off I-70 between Kansas City and St. Louis.

The goal of InterFuse is to unite the scattered Burners and pre-Burners of the Midwest in the flames of this celebration of Art, Fire, and Life - further spreading the unique Burning Experience through the region.

Like at Burning Man, we will build a temporary city-community of tents, domes, light, dance, fire and music in the wilderness (in this case the forest, not the desert). We will celebrate our diversity continuously from Friday until Sunday morning. Then we will dismantle our city and Leave No Trace.
Tags: burning man, burningman, bm, regional, community, art, camping

Map this on Platial

I shared this small beach with these two, for a weekend many years back. Then I recently came across this horrendous item:
Sixty grey seals slaughtered on Blaskets 05-11-04

'About 60 grey seals have been culled on one of the Blasket Islands off the coast of Co Kerry. The Irish Seal Sanctuary blamed local fishermen for the slaughter of the seals. "There's only one direction the finger can be pointed at: the fishing community," said group spokesman Mr Sean Eviston, who travelled to Beginish Island off the coast of the Dingle peninsula to confirm reports of the cull. Mr Eviston said the grey seals killed were mostly "whitecoats," pups about three weeks old. He said the attackers appeared to have used several methods to kill, including gun shots, beating the animals with rocks, and driving nails into their skulls. "They ripped some of these seals open from the nape of the neck," he said. Gardaí are investigating.he Minister for the Environment, Mr Dick Roche, described the slaughter of the seals as "cruel and barbaric". He has sent a department official to the islands to investigate. The cruel and barbaric slaughter of these seals has a de-humanising effect on society. The sight of seals being bludgeoned to death is repugnant," mr Roche said. ishermen have been blamed for occasional slaughters of seals on the islands that dot the western and southern coasts of Ireland. Nobody has ever faced charges. rey seals are supposed to be a protected species under Ireland's Wildlife Act of 1976. Beginish is part of the Blasket Islands, Ireland's largest sanctuary for grey seals. The Irish Seal Sanctuary estimates that fewer than 400 grey seals are resident in the islands, down from about 2,000 a half-century ago.'
Tags: camping, beach, ireland, paddling, kerry, seals, pup, blasket islands, sea kayaks

Map this on Platial

We Camped Somewhere Around Here

It's not a bad drive from Portland to Timothy Lake. We went on a Saturday morning, getting a fairly late start, so it took us a while to find a campground with a spot open.

You have some nice views of Mount Hood along the drive. Vigo drew a great picture of a sunset over Mount Hood. Here's a picture of it:

Once we found a camp site we pitched our tents and went to the lake for a little swim. There were a lot of people in the lake, swimming, fishing, and boating. It would be preferable to camp on the East side of the lake because that side gets sun on the shore longer than the West side. The water was pretty warm. There were salamanders and dragonflies and frogs and ducks and chimpunks around the lake.

The ground was very dry and the kids kicked up a lot of dust. They were pretty much covered in dirt except when they were swimming or sleeping.

We managed to clean them up enough for lunch and supper and bedtime, but apart from that we let them go around looking like they'd been raised by wolves.

Vigo caught a frog for the first time in his life. We found a spot on a path in the woods that seemed to be a favorite of little brown and green tree frogs. They were all over the place, and pretty easy to catch. Very cute, too.

The whole camping area is full of chipmunks who are fairly tame. They're just waiting for you to get four or five feet from the picnic table so they can hop up and snag some food. They're cute, but at the same time kind of gross, leaving chipmunk turds all over the picnic table after their sunrise scrounging.

I woke up a few times in the night. A couple times I heard some kind of wild canine in the far distance making whining barkish calls. Cayotes or wolves, I suppose.

The kids had a great time roasting marshmallows and Vigo did a great job helping me collect firewood and make the fire.

We did some shadow puppet theater on the side of the tent with Jason, Di-Ann, Emiko, and Tabor. Just before going to bed we caught a toad and made a shadow of him on the side of the tent for our friends.

Di-Ann learned how to skip stones and Emiko figured it out, too.

Vigo was a bit envious because he couldn't quite get the knack of it. Emiko is also a pretty great frisbee thrower.

We had a great weekend and a really nice, long talk all the way home on Sunday night. I love it when vigo gets into a talkative mood.

2 nights camping

The other main campgrounds at Timothy Lake were slammed full, we found our way around the lake, miles in on a gravel road that feels like it's going nowhere, but that eventually brings you to this small 8 site campground that site directly on the PCT.

Highlights:
*shadow puppet theatre by tracy and vigo
*treefrog alley, an area of the woods saturated with tiny green and dark brown tree frogs - Tabor held a few in his hands, and basically just wanted to hangout there all day long, but the skeeters were also in ample supply there, so, the duration of frog alley visits were usually pretty short
*the second night we had the pick of the sites, everyone else had gone home
*swarm of dragonfly hatchlings hovering around the waters edge
*di-ann and emiko learning how to skip rocks
*smores (the kids' first i think)
*the stars, and sleeping with the tent in convertible mode so we could stare at them all night long
*finding a chipmunk that had got itself stuck in the campstove box

lowlights:
*incredibly loud college kids blasting Boards of Canada late into the first nite, and yelping.
*mosquitos
*chipmunks getting into our bread
*sappy hammock ropes
*this isn't the sunny side of the lake
*running low on water, had to make a 2 hour rount trip to the store
Tags: camping, vacation, oregon tour 2006, timothy lake, offspring

Map this on Platial
So, if you're planning to head this way, the lakefront is the best in North Bend. We were able to find a spot with no reservation unline the other 2 Timothy Lake campgrounds.

I forgot that camping on Timothy was so much dirtier than other campgrounds, Not sure why, perhaps because the sand is well... dirt. The lake is as clear and majestic as ever. No sweat for us but after two days the kids looked like they were early humans who had been born and lived only in the woods.
Tags: dirt, timothy lake, camping, recommend, isolated

Map this on Platial
Seen from the camp on Beginish.
I'm a fair-weather paddler as you can see. This was a close-call three-day trip: where the weather was crucial but the forecast ... not quite as committed as I'd have liked.
Rather than trespass on this benign somnolence, I decided to creep timorously down the exposed atlantic side of Great Blasket, to explore Inishvickillane and Inishnabo. Nearly my undoing (see Blaskets).
Tags: camping, ireland, paddling, kerry, sea kayak, inishtooskert, blasket islands

Map this on Platial

The Gearagh, Lee River

Gearagh - 'gware-ach' doesn't even come near - is a hidden land that most drive by without a thought.

The Gearagh essentially forms an inland delta, where the River Lee breaks into a complex network of channels (2 to 6m wide) weaving through a series of wooded islands. It is the only extensive remains of Alluvial Forest found in western Europe. It is a unique place of streams, narrow channels and small islands.
Here are found some very rare plant and insect specimens which have been investigated and recorded by famous naturalists and scientists since the 19th century. There are 100's of species of flowers, plants and ferns. During the autumn and winter months migratory birds arrive in vast numbers and flocks of wild duck, snipe, woodcock, curlew, lapwing and swans can be seen on the islands. I watched an otter diving repeatedly for eels, and eating them floating on its back, the eel held in its forepaws.
The Gearagh can also be a very dangerous place - it is very easy to get lost, there are deep areas, muddy banks and floods do occur regularly. The photos with the cows show us completely lost and having to haul the boats across several semi-flooded fields to find a road.

In latter years the Gearagh has achieved a certain amount of fame as a source of poitin ('potcheen') - a highly potent raw-tasting alcohol brewed from malt syrup or molasses in illicit stills. The last time I ran a RiverTrek weekend, the weather turned - after a couple of capsizes I called a halt a few miles short of the end. We pulled the boats up high, and struck off across fields in the dusk. The house we stumbled on turned out be that of the elderly brother and sister who I used to buy my poteen from. They welcomed all eight of us, warmed us with a 'hot drop' - and drove us to our cars.

The lower part of the Gearagh was flooded to form a reservoir for hydro-electricity - the stumps have all the gloomy horror of a 1st. World War battlefield.
Tags: camping, canoe, ireland, paddling, cork, gearaght, river lee, poteen

Map this on Platial
We spent a full day here exploring the decommissioned fort that was once part of the coastal defense system. The movie An Officer and A Gentleman was filmed here, so everything feels eerily familar! We toured the Commanding Officer's House, strolled along the beaches, and ducked into the spooky abandoned gun emplacements. Kids love running around the place with a flashlight, even "big kids" like us! There are also a youth hostel and camping sites here for all you budget-minded folks.
Tags: camping, beach, parks, youth hostel, forts, Port Townsend, Fort Worden, An Officer and A Gentleman

Map this on Platial
I could retire in Ouray and happily be the assistant campground manager at Amphitheater, like our new friend Patrick. JIm might beat me to it, though. This place reminded me of Latin America--lush forests on one side and views of rocky cliffs and peaks on the other. Sites are very private, some have better views than others. #32 is very private, #15 has good views, and there are probably many more great spots. We were in #5, and originally thought the proximity to the bathroom might be less than desirable, but it was actually perfect. There are many small bathrooms spread out, so there was only one other couple at site 15 using the bathroom--which, by the way, is the nicest toilet I've seen while camping--smelled like flowers, had a picture on the wall, and a light that turned on upon entry. not too bad!! Patrick the Nice Ranger Man let us park an extra car than normally allowed (Welcome, Cory!!) and was super friendly. 5 stars indeed!
Tags: camping, Ouray

Map this on Platial
Admission:
$4 for nonmember adults;
$3 for nonmember children (3-12) and seniors

Ipswich River, Mass Audubon’s largest sanctuary, offers more than 10 miles of interconnecting trails that invite you to explore the forests, meadows, and wetlands. Canoe along eight miles of the Ipswich River that run through the sanctuary and camp on Perkins Island, located a half-mile up the river (members can rent canoes from May through October). Members can also rent a cabin that is conveniently located close to the sanctuary’s office and program facilities and sleeps four. In April, listen for the chorus of American toads and pickerel frogs. Watch for river otters, painted turtles, and great blue herons at various times throughout the year. Climb the drumlin and esker, landscape features created by a glacier 15,000 years ago. Huge rocks and exotic trees and shrubs that were part of a former arboretum provide an adventurous walk along the Rockery Trail. This sanctuary has the following universally accessible facilities: Restrooms, Barn, Education Center.
