My aunt and cousin, Vince, lives here. Vince's dad died of a sudden heart attack when he was twelve. His father was in the military and they didn't have a lot money, so he and his mother lived on welfare much of his life. He did received a full scholarship to UCI with all expenses paid for such as tuition, housing, books, etc. I remember taking him to his orientation with my aunt and touring the campus, which ended when we got to the computer lab where about 100 network PCs were hooked up with Starcraft on them. At times, my aunt would call me and ask me to go see him - and I would do so by bringing him food bought from Costco and free t-shirts I got from work. When he graduated with a computer science and engineering degree, I was extremely happy for him. In some ways, I always thought we are similar in that we were raised by our mothers for the most part. Vince is socially awkward, biracial, and suffers from obesity (something that is in his genes). He went back home to the only place he had ever lived. Remindedly, "...it's not how long you're here but what you do while you're here."
Tags: childhood, growing up, cousin, vince, aunt

Map this on Platial

My grandparents' old house in Mountain Lakes

My mom spent part of her teenage years in an old stone house that was here. We used to visit my grandparents there when I was a kid. I loved canoeing and sailing on the lake, and especially enjoyed watching the 4th of July fireworks from the backyard. The house had at least three stories, and there was a detached garage that also had at least two stories. There was a sunroom where my grandfather grew his huge Christmas cactuses and orchids. Eventually, my grandparents sold it, and someone tore it down and built two houses.
Tags: childhood, lake, sailing, grandparents, canoeing, new jersey, grandfather, nj, grandmother, mountain lakes

Map this on Platial
The oldest son of my mom's best friend used to babysit us sometimes. I think his name was Alan, or maybe Andrew. I had a really big crush on him when I was 6 or 7, so whenever he came over to babysit I forced him to play the "Grease" sountrack on the record player and act it out, with me playing Sandra and him playing whatever John Travolta's character's name was.

He was a good sport.

I had seen Grease on HBO at my grandparents' house, so I knew the moves. My favorite character had been Roz, though, not Sandra. I couldn't identify with Sandra's wussiness, but I could get into playing out that finale song ("You're the one that I want, You're the one I want, I want, ooh, ooh, ooh, honey...").

My little brother and sister and I used to play at acting out songs on the record player a lot. My mother was a big fan of novelty music, so she had several great compilations which really lent themselves well to this game.

Alan eventually joined the army and was stationed in Germany. He met a German woman and they got married and had kids. They used to come back to Fort Dodge every couple years. I remember the woman he married didn't talk very much. She always stocked up on blue jeans because apparently they were much more expensive in Germany.

One Good Summer

My earliest memory as a child was swimming in public pools with my father. As I grew up, my friends and I would float at night in swimming pools the temperature of blood; pools the color of Earth as seen from outer space. We would spend our summer days and nights bathed in chlorine - lit by the pure blue lights installed underneath diving boards. I used to think that the heat would suck every last drop from your swimming pool or redden our skins until it had the hue of raw flesh. I remembered you saying... And some people like summer. "Have a great summer," their yearbook inscriptions bellow happily, as if they actually want me to enjoy myself, as if they actually would notice if I imploded in front of them. But with graduation here and the fact that I will probably never see any of my school mates again hovering in my brain, I can honestly say that I am going to have the best summer of my life and even my new manager at work can't stop me. So here's to you being able to fling your problems away like the fleas off a dog's back and by the way, have a great summer.
Tags: summer, childhood, high school, reflection, swimming pools, have a great summer, summer break, laziness, misquoting someone somewhere

Map this on Platial

Bike Accident When I was 9

I was riding around the block on my pink Diamond Back bmx when a car zooming out of a driveway backed into me, sending me careening into another car that was reversing out of the driveway next to it. I was thrown to the ground and bounced a few feet but found myself without a scratch. My bicycle was pinned under the second car. It seemed that the two old men involved were on their way to play some golf together and had been in a hurry. They were pretty freaked out about it and after making sure I wasn't hurt, pried my bike out for me. It was in ok condition too.

I was terrified and shaking, thinking that since I had been in a car crash that the men might "sue me." After shouting thanks for helping me retreive my bike, I sped off in fear that they might pursue me to try to find out who I was for their impending lawsuit.

Hasbro Releases Eau de Play-Doh

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - May 15, 2006 - It's one of the most unique smells around. And now you can wear it.

Hasbro is continuing its celebration of Play-Doh's 50th anniversary by releasing "Eau de Play-Doh," a perfume designed to smell just like the kids' modeling clay.
Spokesman Gary Serby says Play-Doh's smell is one of its most enduring memories, and Hasbro figures smelling the perfume will transport people back to their childhood.

It sells for 19 dollars a bottle
Tags: childhood, toys, memory, smells, perfume, playdough, transported

Map this on Platial

Kanchanaburi

This is my mother's birthplace. It was where my maternal grandparents lived until their deaths in their late 90's. The area they lived in were all farm land. Quite rural. The village is tucked away in one of section of those lands. For the longest time there were any telephones coming in to the village. There was only one phone available at the Buddhist temple in the center of the village. The monks would announce on the loud speaker every time someone called for one of the residents in the village. They all had cell phones way even way before the local government put in a land line.

My mom youngest sister, my aunt, lives in a more developed area of Kanchanaburi. Another older sister raised her family in the center of town. It was here that my mom spent her adolescent years.
Tags: childhood, Thailand, birth place, Kanchanaburi

Map this on Platial
This is the home I spent two years of my child hood at. I went through the third and fourth grades while learning how to ride a bike, kiss gyrls, and throw dirt clauds at my hated neighbors. The Cult of Sack was a neighborhood secret society that was shared amongst my sibling friends. We would trample through the gullies and creeks around the borio, smiting any foe who stood in our way. the original NES was released while I lived here. I remember other kids in the neighborhood getting the console. Their living rooms would fill up with kids from around the area gauking at the new toy.
Tags: childhood, growing up, video games, nintendo, king county.

Map this on Platial
