I had too much to drink at the before-party party. I was wearing a huge paper mache mask which obstructed my view. I was going way too fast. When I fell off my bike and was completely unhurt, I should have turned back and gone home. I don't remember where the party was, but we got there and had a pretty good time dancing until some drunk reveler head butted me while doing the hair shake dance to "Smells Like Teen Spirit," breaking my nose. Ugh. I shouldn't have taken off my mask. The giant paper mache face would have protected me.

In the Cyndi Lauper / Madonna scission of the early 1980s I was firmly and unshakeably in the Lauper camp. My favorite song from that album was "She Bop," because it reminded me of Betty Boop. When I later found out that it was a song about masturbation, well, I loved it all the more. Cyndi kind of lost me with "Time After Time." I still hate that song. It's just grating as hell.

In 1990 I went off to college at Boston University. Part of the reason I chose BU was that it was as far from Iowa as I figured I could get. I lived at Shelton Hall on the "writers' floor." It was here that I met Justine. I used to dance to this song at ManRay, stomping my combat boots and shaking my long hair around. Justine and I listened to this record a lot in our dorm. We went to the first Lollapalooza mainly to see Nine Inch Nails. I registered to vote for the first time at that concert.

Beantown rolls up the sidewalks at 2 a.m. (depressing), so thank the heavens for this place. It’s a membership club, which means you have to find someone to sponsor you in the door, and there are no markings or signs for it at all. It’s the best kept secret here, and many of the boys want it to stay that way. So if you’re looking to get in, your best bet is to go out to Machine, BUZZ, or Avalon and find someone who is headed to Rise. Then beg them to sponsor you in. The club regularly features such marquee talent as Chus & Ceballos, Roger Sanchez, Richie Ladue, and more. Once you get in, you’ll find the hottest late-night party in the smallest little venue you can imagine. The first floor is a lounge (without a real bar, since Rise doesn’t serve alcohol thanks to city ordinances), and the second is the pulsing, raving dance floor. The party goes all night at Rise! The most crowded nights are when a hot DJ is in town, usually on Saturdays.

Built in 1924, the Renaissance Casino and Ballroom was one of the only upscale reception halls in New York available for events sponsored by African Americans. Thus, it earned the distinction of hosting the first awards ceremony for The Crisis (a publication edited by W. E. B. Du Bois). The Renaissance Casino and Ballroom entertained patrons with such varied diversions as cabaret acts, concerts, and gambling. On the second story, couples danced the Lindy Hop, Black Bottom, and Charleston to the sounds of Chick Webb's and Fletcher Henderson's orchestras. The dance floor doubled as home court for a basketball team named the Harlem Renaissance. Dubbed the "Harlem Rens," it was the first all-black basketball team to win a World Championship. The extent to which the Renaissance Casino and Ballroom was woven into the fabric of Harlem nightlife is evidenced by its appearance in literature of the day, such as "College Formal: Renaissance Casino," a poem by Langston Hughes.

Savoy Ballroom

Spanning an entire block of New York City, the Savoy Ballroom was one of Harlem's best-known nightclubs. Nicknamed "The Home of the Happy Feet," it became the hottest dance spot in town, drawing throngs of Harlem residents and well-known dancers like "Shorty George" Snowden and Earl "Snakehips" Tucker. Many jazz-dance crazes of the 1920s and 1930s—including the "lindy" or "Lindy Hop," a jitterbug inspired by Charles Lindbergh's historic solo transatlantic flight in May 1927—originated there. After being "exported" from Harlem, the lindy spawned many local variants as it caught on around the country. The Savoy often featured two bands, one at either end of the hall. In a sort of musical relay race, one band would kick in just before the other quit playing, guaranteeing a nonstop sound. This arrangement sparked the Savoy's signature musical innovation, the famous "Battle of the Bands," which pitted against one another combos led by legends such as Chick Webb ("King of the Savoy"), Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, and Duke Ellington. In the arid desert of Swing Era segregation, the Savoy was a welcome oasis of integration. The storied ballroom enjoyed international renown.

Native son John Waters filmed the original Hairspray movie in 1988, a love story to 1962 Baltimore, MD. The entire movie was filmed in Baltimore, MD. The cast included notables such as Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Debbie Harry, Josh Charles, Divine, and new comer Ricki Lake. It was such a success that Waters turned the movie into a Broadway musical, also a huge success. Up until December 2008, the show continued to play on Broadway in the Neil Simon Theatre. A new movie cast was chosen, and in 2007, Waters released the musical version of Hairspray, filmed in Toronto. The cast included notables such as John Travolta, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Allison Janey, Queen Latifah, and new comer Nikki Blonsky. Of course, I am partial to the movie's setting in Baltimore, being a native myself and still living nearby.

Gay Hiphopper doormen, trippy hippy video projections, middle aged mediterranean bartender and VJ, skinny white go-go dancing boys in mascara and bulging cartoon underoos in cages and atop disco flashing lights pedestals, video poker, vending machines with chips, and many video monitors strewn around. The music quickly turned techno, the go-go boys were off duty and everyone left except the dude with the most ripped up jeans you have eveer seen.

Nightlife in Harlem consisted of an electrifying mix of live jazz and blues, dancing, plays, and literary readings—not to mention eating, drinking, and conversing. A'Lelia Walker's parties provided all of these things in one place. Walker was the heiress to the fortune of Madam Walker, her enterprising mother, who grew rich on the successful sales of hair care products for African Americans. A'Lelia Walker used part of her inheritance to fuel her interest in Harlem's cultural life. She renovated her brownstone on 136th Street, filled it with posh furniture, and invited black and white artists, writers, patrons, scholars, bohemians, and Harlem high society to dance, drink, and converse. Walker's Harlem home became a popular nighttime hotspot, drawing guests like Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and James Weldon Johnson, and performances by Alberta Hunter and Adelaide Hall. Guests sat in a room next to a wall adorned with Langston Hughes's poem, "Weary Blues." The room was named "The Dark Tower" after poet Countee Cullen's column in the magazine Opportunity. Walker originally asked popular Harlem artists Aaron Douglas and Richard Bruce Nugent to decorate The Dark Tower, but instead hired Manhattan decorator Paul Frankel. In one controversial party, Walker supposedly served her white guests pig's feet and chitterlings, while black guests dined on caviar, champagne, and pheasant in a separate, more lavish room. While many Harlemites looked forward to Walker's parties, some regarded the "Mahogany Millionairess" with disdain, believing she merely liked to "show off her blackness to whites," as writer Richard Bruce Nugent once said.
