superDraw and Morgan Packard. April 30, 2007. 9pm-1am

        Admission 21 plus, Free

superDraw takes live video manipulation to new territory by returning to basics...drawing. The visceral act of sliding a pen across a computer drawing pad suddenly opens up a world of animated possibilities. Audiences see the direct correlation between drawing and generating amazing visuals, in real-time to the live electronic music being generated by Morgan Packard.

Morgan Packard has numerous albums under his belt. From bouncy dance floor music to abstract compositions commissioned by dance troupes, Morgan Packard is a very well respected electronic sound master craftsman. He often starts with natural sounds, and then manipulates them beyond recognition to create songs that are as natural and organic as they are electronic. Having performed together for many years, he and superDraw compliment to each other perfectly with sound and visuals.

Residents DJ Flack and DJ C will also be spinning experimental party music from their laptops.

UPDATE: I tried to go to this during the art festival. Unfortunately, the gallery was having a PRIVATE EVENT and I couldn't go in. Incredibly lame. I was so annoyed!

Three recent interactive drawing installations by Camille Utterback, Untitled 5 (2004), Untitled 6 (2005), and Alluvial (2007), invite playful interaction using a mirroring device that allows visitors to recognize an abstract representation of their own movements within a projected picture plane. The algorithms required to successfully render the desired effects are anything but simple. Utterback’s flawlessly designed interfaces do not allow the technology to overshadow the aesthetic quality and content of the work. By limiting the scope of each project to a finite range of exceedingly well-structured parameters, the artist ensures that her installations are easily accessible, revealing their complexities over time. Curated by Lisa Dorin, the Art Institute of Chicago.
Tags: drawing, fun, exhibit, interactive, cyberarts festival

Map this on Platial
Vacation!

This was a wonderful vacation. I drew every day. I went to the beach. I spent a night in la Paz. I got to hang out with good friends.

Highlights of the trip include Serena bringing her lettuce sprouts with us to La Paz to keep them watered and happy, having the hotel rooftop bar all to ourselves in La Paz, Brent's cooking, the rocky beach, making up stories about the ruins of the old cannery, and all of the hanging out.

Mary Cassatt was born here

American painter and printmaker who exhibited with the Impressionists.

Cassatt lived in Europe for five years as a young girl. She was tutored privately in art in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861-65, but she preferred learning on her own and in 1866 traveled to Europe to study. In 1874 Cassatt chose Paris as her permanent residence and established her studio there. She shared with the Impressionists an interest in experiment and in using bright colours inspired by the out-of-doors. Cassatt urged her wealthy American friends and relatives to buy Impressionist paintings, and in this way, more than through her own works, she exerted a lasting influence on American taste.

Sold my sketchbook

I used to draw in my sketchbook tirelessly when I was a kid. One year, while in the 7th grade, I sketched and colored about 70+ robots and later sold it to a guy at a video store for $50 who I knew. I used to be obsessed with Transformers, Marvel Comics, and G.I. Joe at the times. My friends and I would create characters, sketch them out, and make figurine pieces for our role playing games. I wished I hadn't done that because it would be fun to flip through it now.
Tags: drawing, transformers, sketchbook, childhood memories, marvel comics, macross, g.i. joes, role playing games

Map this on Platial

Tracy

I'm a professional designer who hasn't done a lick of design work in about six months. I've worked in costume design for street theater, fashion design, interior design and gallery installation, and curating. My most recent works have been a series of very creepy doll portraits of livejournal users, and handbags made of recycled men's wool pants (which were in the Christmas shopping guide of DWELL magazine, excuse my bragging, but it was my first solo press).

I also wrote and taught an after-school class where 10-year-olds learned about immigration in their community and then designed and hand sewed dolls representing immigrants, with little stories to go along with them. Anyone interested in that can let me know and I'll pass the course outline on for free. Great fun.

My crafty passtimes include knitting, especially socks, drawing, drawing, drawing, paper mache, sewing, doll making, and printing.
Tags: fashion, drawing, recycling, wool, reuse, craft, teaching, art, printing, fabulous, knitting, sewing, lazy, designer, silk, crafty vixen, handbags, doll making, immigration, costume design, street theater, pret a porter, tri teddies, toothsome moose man, livejournal dolls, silkscreen, reconstructed, procrastinator, maple flowers, dfg dfgsd, dsadf sdfsdaf

Map this on Platial

Bob Slate

Bob Slate does have a whole half of the store with junk no artist wants or needs, like calendars and hokey rubber stamps, but they also have pretty much anything you want for drawing.

I got some very good drawing pens here. The kind of pens you can have a hard time finding these days. They were old and dusty and in a back drawer, but I got 'em.

They have a lot of good paper, and a good sketchbook selection. They have a pretty great little section of technical drafting tools, too. I got a giant French curve there which I was needing for pattern drawing (clothes).

Love this store.

They have a smaller selection for painting, but I don't paint so I can't really say if it's a good small selection or not.

It's also a good stationery store. They have great envelopes and you can even get typwriter ribbon there.
Tags: art supplies, drawing, paper, art, typewriter ribbon, pencils

Map this on Platial

I've been to pearl Paint in New york and in Boston and haven't been very impressed with either of them. They have a hugeamongous gigantic space, yet they somehow manage to usually not have everything I need. I also find the staff to be generally not that helpful.

The screen printing section is pathetic. they usually don't have that many colors. The shelves are half bare. It is enough to drive a woman to buy art supplies off the internet, which is something I avoid doing because I like having art supply stores around.

I generally hate going here and only do it in a pinch. It is fairly convenient for me to get to, but usually a disappointment.
Tags: art supplies, drawing, sculpture, painting, art store

Map this on Platial
The large majority of questions "slash" concerns (from people after watching Episode One) dealt with Pedal's exact process, and in relation to this; the exact results. 1) Who are we following? 2) Who are we interviewing? 3) Are we driving, or also riding bicycles? 4) How long will this take?

Which brings us to "episode two" - where I do my best to answer these questions as clearly as possible, while walking through what's to be expected during filming.
Sunday January 13, 2008 2:30pm, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School Cabaret Life Drawing Class

$7 2:30pm 18+ (bring your ID, this is a bar)

I've been trying to manange to go to one of these for ages now.

Aside from the standard structure of short poses to warm you up and then longer ones to give you more time to concentrate, this is definitely not your typical life drawing class. Dr. Sketchy's is what happens when cabaret meets art school.
THIS MONTH's Dr. Sketchy's models are some of the awesome ladies from
Big Moves!
Aside from the standard structure of short poses to warm you up and then
longer ones to give you more time to concentrate, this is definitely not
your typical life drawing session. The models wear gorgeous outfits and
slowly strips out of them! The models talks! You'll clap for them and
hoot and holler! You'll tip them! You'll chat with your neighbor! There
is no teacher to embarrass you when you don't produce enough! You get to
drink and draw without getting in trouble! Now is the time to heal those
art school wounds. Dr. Sketchy's will guide you.
You don't have to have any experience, or you could be the guy who does
the pointalist portraits for The Globe. Dig out your dusty sketchbooks
or hit the store and get a pad*, and come join us for a little late
afternoon nudie drawing date.
*Artist and Craftsman Supply 957 Commonwealth Ave. is our sponsor, go in
there and mention Dr. Sketchy and they'll set you up and give you a
discount!
Tags: drawing, cabaret, event, life drawing, strip tease

Map this on Platial
