Join Revels and the Charles River Conservancy for a free community sing celebrating the first day of fall!

From atop the Weeks Bridge linking Boston and Cambridge, and bathed in light, on Sunday, September 23rd, Revels music director George Emlen (and giant puppets Oshun and Poseidon) will lead everyone gathered along the banks of the Charles in river songs and songs of the season.

The 4th annual RiverSing will be a festive musical affair. Joining us on the bridge this year will be members of be Nick Page’s Mystic Chorale, Revels Circle of Song, the Halalisa Singers and other Boston area choruses, all accompanied by keyboard, guitar, bass and drums. In addition, local saxophone greats Stan Strickland, fresh off his award-winning one-man show, and Ken Field of The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, will play antiphonally across the Charles with a third sax, played by Chris O’Brien, joining in as well. The public is invited bring a bell to ring in the new season (we’ll ring our 40-pound River Bell) and join the many singers, musicians and friends of the parklands in this exciting fall tradition that literally links Boston and Cambridge in song!

Picnics are encouraged! Come early and spread your blanket on the grass or meet us at Winthrop Park in Harvard Square at 5:00 pm where select area restaurants will be handing out pre-ordered picnic meals. Then join us for a 5:45 pm processional down to the Charles led by larger-than-life puppets created by the Puppet Collaborative, and local jazz legends the New Orleans-style Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band.
Tags: kidfriendly, music, event, family, festival, puppets, song, giant puppets, harvard square

Map this on Platial
Gigi's "Drive The Bus" World Music & Festival Sept 2008!

First Annual "Drive The Bus" World Music & Festival -
produced by Gigi, Tropic Heat Studios and StormFront Records, Storm Front Music, BMI ~ one Island woman's vision.
"I'm a 4th generation Virgin Islander - homesick. Our culture is..diverse and united at once - everyone's on the
same rock - so we create celebrations that bring the flavor of each and every culture to the table - dancing, music, cultural exhibits, vendors, adults, children, a few donkeys too and chickens, goats :-) If it rains, there's usually a rainbow. If it pours, we thank God for the rainwater that fills our wells/cisterns and nourishes the fruit and flowers of our island. And we dance in the rain.
In honor of the spirit of cultural diversity that allows all of us to express and experience the adventure that life on this planet were meant to be...I'm throwing a party. My kind of party - a peace party, a family and friends party, a come and meet us party....relax, chill-out, laugh, dance, or just sit and watch the shows and meet....new friends.
Welcome to my new home...Chattanooga ~ the best of all worlds I have seen along the way, the place I've chosen - not just because of the beauty of this place - but mostly, because of the beauty of the people here. A place I like to say, "has hope"...I found it here, and I rediscover it daily......here. And I expect you will too -
Your "Drive The Bus" (Be a Leader) hostess,
Gigi
Tags: video, children, arts, music, event, film, family, festival, culture, families, peace, world music, historic village

Map this on Platial

Tour de Fat Bike Carnival - 8/19/2006

This looks like a bunch of fun, that we'll be missing :(

Grab your bike and slip into your alter-ego because New Belgium's philanthropic cycling circus Tour de Fat is hitting the road for its sixth season! Costumes and decorated bikes reign supreme as the participants come for a casual ride, good music and entertainment, then stay, of course, for the beer. Amid the hoopla, Tour de Fat also raises money for local charities.

Admission to the Tour de Fat is free. All profits from beer sales go to local non profit organizations.

Here is a video from last year's festivities:

"FOUR STARS (Highest Rating). The scariest damn film you'll see this year. It will leave you staggering out of the theatre, slack-jawed and trembling. Makes 'Fahrenheit 9/11' look like 'Bambi.' After watching this movie, your comfy, secure notions about America -- and about what it means to be an American -- will be forever shattered. Producer/director Aaron Russo and the folks at Cinema Libre Studio deserve to be heralded as heroes of a post-modern New American Revolution. This is shocking stuff. You'll be angry, you'll be disgusted, but you may actually break out in a cold sweat and feel a sickness deep in your gut; I would advise movie theatre managers to hand out vomit bags. You may end up needing one." --- Todd David Schwartz, CBS

Bit Torrent, Bring Us Together :: 9/28 event

        Bit Torrent, Bring Us Together!
@ Travelers and Record Sound System (403 SW 10th Ave @ Stark St.)
Thursday, Sep. 28th 2006 - 5pm
Portland, Or.

Bit Torrent, created by Bram Cohen, and released to the public in 2002, enables multiple persons to share information with one another "directly", and simultaneously. The directness of the sharing of this information is nearly invisible. With peer to peer file sharing one may never know who they received the information they were seeking from, all they know is that there are like minds out in the world, and they are gathering together towards a cumulative knowledge base. The similarities present between Bit Torrent file sharing and the democratic voice are overtly apparent - like minds are available, they are talking. It is up to the individual to harness the power of those like minds and accentuate those voices in unison for the strength of the community as a whole.

For Bit Torrent, Bring Us Together! Colin Beattie and Sam Gould have create a process oriented dance piece that requires the publics active involvement to play itself out to conclusion - to positive, or negative, results depending on that very involvement. Bit Torrent plays out with individuals serving the roles of Peers, Files, and Trackers, illustrating in real time the correlation between the framework of democratic voice/action, and the Bit Torrent process.

Join us, take part in the role you were born to play!
Tags: art, bit torrent, p2p, peer to peer, red76, performance, dance, conceptual art, portland, event, rskk

Map this on Platial

Tropicalismo; Revolution and the Poetry of Our Democratic Chatter

Tropicalismo; Revolution and the Poetry of Our Democratic Chatter
(begins) @ the Corner of 18th and Couch St.
Monday, Oct. 2nd 2006 7pm
Portland, Or.

Coined by the Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica , Tropicalismo/Tropicalia embraced notions of contamination, or better yet, cultural cannibalism, in visual art, music, film, and poetry, and quite responsibly thereafter, the everyday; devouring everything in sight to create a stew of life, action, and potent tinctures of everyday magicalism. Coming into the light of day during the aftermath of a "bloodless" military coup, Tropicalismo presented a means for youth culture to oppose fascist tactics, and express life, while hiding behind the thinly veiled guise of hapless experimentation and do-nothingness. Though that very haplessness imprisoned two of Tropicalismo's most revolutionary artist/musicians - Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil - and subsequently exiled them for years in England in the late 60's, while also causing the disappearance of countless other less publicly spotlit individuals.

In conjunction with Travelers and Record Sound System's goal of creating a forum to discuss notions of incantation, prophecy, and the role of the individual within democratic dialogue, New York City based writer/historian Aaron Peck (live via cell phone!), and Sam Gould of Red76, will discuss these notions in step with an all too brief history of Tropicalismo.

The discussion will begin at the corner of 18th and Couch St., across from a house wherein an anonymous group of individuals has been holding a drum-circle, regularly, for sometime. Our group will venture on through the neighborhood, searching for other groupings of people gathering to play music with one another in their homes and out into the night. Our walk/talk will end at Club21 for a set of music chosen by Aaron and Sam, played on Club21's jukebox, relating to that nights topic - Caetano Veloso! Jorge Ben! Sam Cooke! Patti Smith! The Replacements! Le Tigre! You Should Join Us!
Tags: art, red76, walking tour, conceptual art, oct 2 2006, 2006.10.02, event, reminder

Map this on Platial

Boston University Theatre

Designed and constructed as America's first civic playhouse, the building today known as the Boston University Theatre was the first tax-exempt theatre established in the nation. Construction having begun in 1923, it was formally opened with Sheridan's The Rivals on November 10‚ 1925. The architect was J. Williams Beal Sons.

Originally named the Repertory Theatre of Boston‚ the theatre was built to be a permanent home for the Henry Jewett Players‚ a Boston–based repertory theatre company. In choosing to locate the theatre across from Symphony Hall and near the Museum of Fine Arts and the old Boston Opera House‚ the theatre’s creators intended to signify its character as a major cultural institution of Boston and its difference from the commercial playhouses in the Boylston‚ Washington‚ Tremont streets area of the city.

Henry Jewett, a native of Australia, whose portrait as Macbeth hangs today in the main stairwell leading to the theatre's balcony, was a distinguished actor and director. Born in 1862, he moved to the United States around the turn of the century and became the leading man for Julia Marlowe. He settled in Boston shortly after 1900 and organized the Henry Jewett Players. The Jewett Company first offered Shakespeare productions at the Boston Opera House; in 1916 it moved to the Copley Theatre where it performed until the early 1920s. But Jewett's ambition was to have a permanent home for his company, and he and his wife Frances vigorously pressed for a facility built by the community. In 1923, the Jewett Repertory Fund was started; many prominent Bostonians, including Calvin Coolidge and A. Lawrence Lowell, president of Harvard University, were on the roster of sponsors.

Almost immediately from its opening‚ the Repertory Theatre was beset by difficulties. There was much theatrical competition‚ and soon an even more serious problem was posed by the advent of talking movies‚ which lured audiences from all types of live entertainment. In 1930‚ Mr. Jewett’s company disbanded. Jewett himself died in the same year.

As the theatre was being closed‚ Jewett’s widow remarked prophetically: "You can’t have a repertory theatre without subsidy — lots of subsidy." The prescience of this view was proven thirty years later in the 1960s as the American regional theatre movement became increasingly significant and revived the pattern of resident theatre companies.

During the 1930s and 1940s‚ the theatre was known as the Esquire Theatre and was mainly used as a movie house. The Esquire specialized in art films‚ and it was here that Boston audiences first saw Laurence Olivier’s Henry V. During these same years‚ the theatre occasionally reverted to its original purpose‚ as in 1941 when Louis Calhern and Dorothy Gish played in Life with Father.

In October 1953, Boston University purchased the facility, and the vision which had initially created the theatre again began to be realized. The School of Theatre Arts at the Boston University College of Fine Arts has now used the theatre as its primary facility for performance, design, and technical production for three decades. The Theatre Arts Program presented its first production, Nicholas Evreinoff's The Chief Thing‚ in December‚ 1954. Its students and faculty annually present approximately seven productions in the theatre’s main auditorium and in the upstairs space‚ now called Studio 210‚ which was originally the Repertory Theatre’s ballr
Tags: boston university theatre, boston, events, reviews, theater, theatre, event

Map this on Platial
INTERSECTION FOR THE ARTS
presents

Terror?

September 11 through November 11
FREE

Opening Reception:
Monday September 11, 6pm

Terror? is an international interdisciplinary project investigating how each one of us experiences fear and how it affects our lives.

Join us for a very special opening on Monday, September 11 at 6pm, as we celebrate this ambitious international exhibition. Terror? includes hundreds of original works from all over the world - creating a cacophony of personal and collective response to some of the most immediate questions and issues of our times. What is terror? Who perpetrates it? How does fear control us, and the world around us? Who are we taught to be afraid of, why? What does fear cost? Where does personal fear intersect with larger societal and political messages of terror? In addition to an exhibition in our gallery, Terror? includes a film screening, readings, public discussions and performance.

Indulge in the culmination of the most popular and obscure micro-brews from around the country with over 200 different beers on tap.

Saint Edward State Park is a 316-acre day-use park with 3,000 feet of freshwater shoreline on Lake Washington. Once a Catholic seminary, the park's rich history reflects in its grounds and architecture. Walks along the undeveloped lakeshore are peaceful and give the visitor many opportunities for nature study.
Tags: things to do, washington, event, state park, brewers, Beer festival

Map this on Platial
Aside from the standard structure of short poses to warm you up and then
longer ones to give you more time to concentrate, this is definitely not
your typical life drawing session. The models wear gorgeous outfits and
slowly strips out of them! The models talks! You'll clap for them and
hoot and holler! You'll tip them! You'll chat with your neighbor! There
is no teacher to embarrass you when you don't produce enough! You get to
drink and draw without getting in trouble! Now is the time to heal those
art school wounds. Dr. Sketchy's will guide you.
You don't have to have any experience, or you could be the guy who does
the pointalist portraits for The Globe. Dig out your dusty sketchbooks
or hit the store and get a pad*, and come join us for a little late
afternoon nudie drawing date.
*Artist and Craftsman Supply 957 Commonwealth Ave. is our sponsor, go in
there and mention Dr. Sketchy and they'll set you up and give you a
discount!
Tags: drawing, cabaret, event, life drawing, strip tease

Map this on Platial

Blackheath Bike and Kite Festival

The Blackheath Bike and Kite festival looks like it should be a great event - it is happening over the weekend of 14th & 15th June, on the heath, and from Lewisham Council’s website, it looks like it will be free of charge. The bugle will be flying a kite (if permitted). In the meantime, some practice will be necessary. In other kite-related news, this blog post by M Johnson demonstrates attaching a mobile phone to a kite, and videoing the results! The bugle feels that this shows a high degree of trust in both the strength of the mobile phone, and skill of the kite flier… Not sure my “controlled landings” would be up to this…

Ariel kite photography has been a big thing on the web for a while- I remember reading about someone who built a camera timer based on an ice-cube and an elastic band - when the kite is in the air, the ice-cube melts, forcing a piece of wood to press the shutter on the camera (this back in 1999, before mobile phones and digital cameras were cheap as Blackheath fish & chips). Just found the page - it’s a bit dusty, but if you blow on it a bit, you should be able to find it behind this link.

If anyone has any examples of Blackheath ariel photography, please let me know!
Tags: event, bike, bikes, festival, mobile phone, kite, kites, blackheath, lewisham, ariel kite photography, ariel photography, ariel photos, blackheath bike and kite festival, kite photography, kite photos

Map this on Platial
