Oregon Covered Bridge Festival

The Oregon Covered Bridge Festival gives residents and visitors alike a chance to enjoy our beautiful bridges and learn about their heritage. Oregon is proud to be the host to 51 covered bridges, the most this side of the Mississippi River. This festival is the only one of its kind held on the West Coast. And, as always, the FRN will be there, a little tipsy, recording and observing.
Tags: bridge, event, oregon, festival, media, podcast, frn, covered, crittendeniv

Map this on Platial

Lunar Stages 10/12/06

        FREE outdoor performance and movie

Four evenings of performance and film under the autumn moon. Whether
used in giving thanks for a bountiful harvest, ensuring safe passage,
conveying mythic tales or simple enjoyment, performing arts have been
a major part of Chinese civilization and daily life for thousands of
years. Lunar Stages celebrates this tradition with four unique
evenings of live Chinese theatrical and musical performances,
followed by thematically related Chinese and American films. Tonight:
Gaijin a Go-Go's Asian retro pop and Charlie's Angels.

Sept 23, 2007. Riversing

Join Revels and the Charles River Conservancy for a free community sing celebrating the first day of fall!

From atop the Weeks Bridge linking Boston and Cambridge, and bathed in light, on Sunday, September 23rd, Revels music director George Emlen (and giant puppets Oshun and Poseidon) will lead everyone gathered along the banks of the Charles in river songs and songs of the season.

The 4th annual RiverSing will be a festive musical affair. Joining us on the bridge this year will be members of be Nick Page’s Mystic Chorale, Revels Circle of Song, the Halalisa Singers and other Boston area choruses, all accompanied by keyboard, guitar, bass and drums. In addition, local saxophone greats Stan Strickland, fresh off his award-winning one-man show, and Ken Field of The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, will play antiphonally across the Charles with a third sax, played by Chris O’Brien, joining in as well. The public is invited bring a bell to ring in the new season (we’ll ring our 40-pound River Bell) and join the many singers, musicians and friends of the parklands in this exciting fall tradition that literally links Boston and Cambridge in song!

Picnics are encouraged! Come early and spread your blanket on the grass or meet us at Winthrop Park in Harvard Square at 5:00 pm where select area restaurants will be handing out pre-ordered picnic meals. Then join us for a 5:45 pm processional down to the Charles led by larger-than-life puppets created by the Puppet Collaborative, and local jazz legends the New Orleans-style Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band.
Tags: kidfriendly, music, event, family, festival, puppets, song, giant puppets, harvard square

Map this on Platial

"Festival's got it all to amaze and amuse," announces the Toronto Star headline. It further says, "The three days event boasts ancient art and modern fun."

Yes, we are back to celebrate Lunar New Year. 2006 will be year 4704, according to our ancient calendar, and it will be the year of the Dog!

Our original Chinese theme has expanded to include other Asian communities that celebrate the Lunar New Year, such as: Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, Laos and also Chinese-speaking communities from Philippines, Indonesia, India, Singapore, Malaysia and others.

Let us celebrate together. Gigi's "Drive The Bus" World Music & Festival Sept 2008!

First Annual "Drive The Bus" World Music & Festival -
produced by Gigi, Tropic Heat Studios and StormFront Records, Storm Front Music, BMI ~ one Island woman's vision.
"I'm a 4th generation Virgin Islander - homesick. Our culture is..diverse and united at once - everyone's on the
same rock - so we create celebrations that bring the flavor of each and every culture to the table - dancing, music, cultural exhibits, vendors, adults, children, a few donkeys too and chickens, goats :-) If it rains, there's usually a rainbow. If it pours, we thank God for the rainwater that fills our wells/cisterns and nourishes the fruit and flowers of our island. And we dance in the rain.
In honor of the spirit of cultural diversity that allows all of us to express and experience the adventure that life on this planet were meant to be...I'm throwing a party. My kind of party - a peace party, a family and friends party, a come and meet us party....relax, chill-out, laugh, dance, or just sit and watch the shows and meet....new friends.
Welcome to my new home...Chattanooga ~ the best of all worlds I have seen along the way, the place I've chosen - not just because of the beauty of this place - but mostly, because of the beauty of the people here. A place I like to say, "has hope"...I found it here, and I rediscover it daily......here. And I expect you will too -
Your "Drive The Bus" (Be a Leader) hostess,
Gigi
Tags: video, children, arts, music, event, film, family, festival, culture, families, peace, world music, historic village

Map this on Platial

Golden Dragon Parade 2006

2-5 PM. Many events from Jan 29-Feb 17. See the website calendar for more information. Over one hundred years ago, the Chinese community began to participate in the parades of the City of Los Angeles. In 1898, the Chinese lion and dragon procession were regarded as one of the most beautiful units in the City's Annual La Fiesta Parade. After the Vietnam War in 1975, Indo-Chinese refugees poured into the United States and soon became active in our community. Local family associations, Buddhist temples, and community-based organizations mushroomed and the parade became a focal point for community participation. Without a doubt, the Golden Dragon Parade is the highlight of the Chinese New Year in Southern California.
Parade starts at main Street and New High Street, then turns left up W Cesar chavez Ave, turning right on N Broadway, where it hits it's longest stride. It turns left on Bernard St and wraps back around to end at Hill Street between Alpine and Ord.
Tags: decorations, chinatown, china, chinese, kids, parade, festival, asian, culture, eastern, families, celebration, chinese new year, year of the dog, 4704

Map this on Platial

Brat Days 2006 Festival

        Celebrate by eating brats! August 3 - 5, 2006
There website says: It all began in the 19th century when sausage found its way to Sheboygan through German Settlers. Over the years the ancient Roman tradition of cooking them over an open flame has been kept alive by the people of Sheboygan. Though no one will ever understand the phrase “Brat Fry” because they are grilled, brats continue to be the focal point of the community.

The first festival was held in 1953 in downtown Sheboygan. Back then it was a common sight to see streets re-named Bratwurst Blvd., and Seemel-Strasse. Horse drawn wagons were also seen in the annual parade.

After holding it for more than 13 years, the decision was made to cancel it because the crowds had gotten too big for the city’s downtown to handle.

In 1978 the festival was revitalized! Brat day’s is the largest fundraiser for the Sheboygan Jaycees. All proceeds are given back to the community primarily through donations. Past organizations that have received donations include the Field of Dreams (Sheboygan Recreation Department), Above and Beyond Children’s Museum, Jaycee Quarryview Park, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Area High School Scholarship Program, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.

This shows one of the many brat stands setup throughout downtown Sheboygan in the 1950's. At one time there were over 50 brat stands operated by different organizations and businesses.

Chinese New Year, Jan. 28, 2006

Usher in the Year of the Dog with the Tucson Chinese School at the annual Chinese New Year festival on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Tucson Children's Museum. Families will enjoy dance performances, singing, calligraphy demonstrations, and craft-making activities at the festival. This event is scheduled from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and is included in the price of admission.
Families attending the festival will see a performance of the Lion Dance, listen to traditional songs sung in Chinese, enjoy a children's dance, receive a New Year's saying written in Chinese calligraphy, and more.
Students from the Tucson Chinese School will perform the energetic and colorful Lion Dance at the festival. This traditional dance is believed to drive away evil spirits and bring in good luck especially in the New Year.
Festival guests will be able to take home a New Year's saying written in Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy has evolved into a worldwide art form greatly admired for the discipline and artistry involved in creating the strokes.
Kids will also be able to take home a paper-cutting souvenir and learn how to make items with paper folding, courtesy of the Tucson Chinese School.
The Tucson Chinese School is once again partnering with the Tucson Children's Museum in bringing this festival to the community. The school provides Chinese cultural and language classes once a week to children and adults.
The Tucson Children's Museum began its Festivals of Light series in 2001, working together with cultural groups throughout the community to share holiday traditions with one another. The Festivals include music, dance, songs, stories and folk art traditions that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Each festival includes hands-on activities for children.
Tags: arts, chinese, festival, culture, eastern, chinese new year, year of the dog, new year, childrens museum

Map this on Platial

Aztec version of a group Sweet 16 Party

Called something like the Summer Corn Festival, this amazingly energetic and festive gathering drew people of Aztec heritage from all over the Bay Area for the annual celebration of Summer, Corn and mostly the fact that another batch of daughters have turned 15. It was described to us, by one mother of a 15 year old girl, as a version of a sweet 16 party, but for all the girls at once.

The conch horns over the simple drumming mixed with incense and incredible feathered costumes made for a very moving and exciting time. Tabor basically tried to be an Aztec drummer the whole rest of the day!
Tags: sf, offspring, festival, aztec, dolores park, summer corn festival

Map this on Platial

Firefly Festival

Firefly is a camp/Burn festival that is similar to Burning Man...just on a much smaller scale of 400 attendees. It's in the woods of northern Vermont for four days in the start of summer, and getting to it means getting muddy. But, when it's not rainy and not so muddy, Firefly is quite enchanting and inspiring. My band has played there twice. The 2005 festival was awesome...2006 got a bit rained out...but I like it just the same.
Tags: festival, burning man, firefly

Map this on Platial

Blackheath Bike and Kite Festival

The Blackheath Bike and Kite festival looks like it should be a great event - it is happening over the weekend of 14th & 15th June, on the heath, and from Lewisham Council’s website, it looks like it will be free of charge. The bugle will be flying a kite (if permitted). In the meantime, some practice will be necessary. In other kite-related news, this blog post by M Johnson demonstrates attaching a mobile phone to a kite, and videoing the results! The bugle feels that this shows a high degree of trust in both the strength of the mobile phone, and skill of the kite flier… Not sure my “controlled landings” would be up to this…

Ariel kite photography has been a big thing on the web for a while- I remember reading about someone who built a camera timer based on an ice-cube and an elastic band - when the kite is in the air, the ice-cube melts, forcing a piece of wood to press the shutter on the camera (this back in 1999, before mobile phones and digital cameras were cheap as Blackheath fish & chips). Just found the page - it’s a bit dusty, but if you blow on it a bit, you should be able to find it behind this link.

If anyone has any examples of Blackheath ariel photography, please let me know!
Tags: event, bike, bikes, festival, mobile phone, kite, kites, blackheath, lewisham, ariel kite photography, ariel photography, ariel photos, blackheath bike and kite festival, kite photography, kite photos

Map this on Platial
