Great spot to watch ocean-going ships, sailboats, windsurfers, kitesailers, hike, run, bike, rollerblade, picnic . . . you name it. It's one of the most amazing things about San Francisco. Right in the middle of a big city is a park with unbelievable physical beauty. Crissy Field used to be the airfield associated with The Presidio. Lot's of history and other cool things to do that are nearby. There's a cool evening picture of Crissy Field by David Sanger, along with some other photos I found on Flickr or the web.
Tags: walk, hike, ships, biking, boats, beach, windsurfing, san francisco, kitesailing, sailing, crissy field, baby stroller, rollerblading

Map this on Platial

Eaton Canyon Natural Area

Eaton Canyon lies nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, very close to Los Angeles and Pasadena. There are bicycle and foot trails, as well as a nature center that coordinates outdoor planned activities. I love the dioramas in the nature center.

There's a beautiful waterfall that feeds a stream that winds its way through the park. Lot's of folks take their very happy dogs there and you'll see a lot of families out enjoying the more moderate trails.

Described by some as the "the Yosemite of Orange County," Fremont is rich in diversity and history lore. The Nature Conservancy natural conducts docent-led hikes , mountain bike rides and equestrian rides enabling nature-lovers to acquaint themselves with the canyon's wonders. Reservations for docent-led outing are required due to the area's sensitive habitat. As part of a comprehensive environmental assessment, The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with The Irvine Company, will study the area to determine expanded access opportunities in the future.
Tags: fremont canyon, hike, mountain bike, equestrian, nature

Map this on Platial

Mushroom Walk

Our new Fall resolution is that we will go to the Fells for a walk every Sunday, no matter what the weather. It was a grey and rainy day yesterday, and a good test of our resolve. Erik made us breakfast and helped herd us out.

Since it is prime shrooming season, we decided to start educating ourselves about fungus, and picked several varieties of mushroom to bring home and identify. There is really an amazing variety of mushrooms out there in the fells.

Unfortunately, at one point in our off-path hunting, we disturbed a nest of yellow jackets and were attacked by the aggressive little devils. Erik was stung first and while we were standing there trying to figure out what had stung him, Vigo was stung on the back. We quickly walked back to the path, where Sam was stung. Then I saw one of the miniscule pests on Vigo's belt, trying to sting him again. I swatted him and moved everyone quickly up the path farther. I was lucky not to be stung, mostly beacuse I was wearing a long leather coat. Apparently the yellow jacket sting is wickidly painful. Vigo was brave about it, but then after we got out of the woods at the end of our walk he ended up getting stung once more by a bug that had crawled into the sleave of his rain jacket. He's a little wary of going back to the Fells at all now, but I'm sure he'll get over it.

After our walk in the woods, we dropped Vigo off for a playdate to make stop-action Bionicle movies with Jonah, while Erik and I went to the bookstore to look for a field guide. We found two guides and after a lot of comparing the pros and the cons we settled on the Audubon Society guide. We're hoping our friends Brian and Aaron will be into fungus study, too, and will get another guide for cross-reference. We used the book to find good candidates and the internet for better confirmation.

Of all of the mushrooms we found, we were able to identify three with some confidence, and one was a choice edible!

Gem Studded Puffball
lycoperdon perlatum

The two mushrooms on the left are gem-studded puffballs. The smooth-surfaced one on the right is an unidentified pufffball whose flesh was yellowish rather than white.

This little mushroom was fairly abundant on our walk. These are about 2-3 inches high. From our field guide: "This species is easy to recognize. It is a choice edible if, when cut in half, it has undifferentiated white flesh."

It can be confused with the pear-shaped puffball, which is also a choice edible. We tried a half of one each this morning and they were delicious.

Viscid Violet Cort
cortinarius iodes

This mushroom was all over the place, and really beautiful and slimy in the rain. There are good edible blue mushrooms, but this is not one of them. They are not poisonous, but our guide book says "they look better than they taste."

Emetic Russula
russula emetica

This is the last of the mushrooms of which we felt confident in our identification. As it's name suggests, it is not to be eaten. ("Emetic" means "induces nausea and vomiting.")

Here are the other mushrooms we picked and tried to identify, along with our guesses as to what they might be.

probably Painted Suillus
suillus pictus

The painted suillus is a good edible and this is very likely what this is, but we aren't going to try tasting it until we have full confidence in the identification. We aren't sure that the big mushroom is the larger version of the smaller one, either. Suillus pictus grows only under Eastern White Pine trees, five-needle pines. That will be a help in confirming the identification next time.

probably melanoleuca melaleuca

maybe some kind of trich

Probably poisonous.

Mushroom Hunting with a Camera

We went back for another walk on Monday (Labor Day). This was partly to help Vigo get over his fear of yellow jackets in the Fells and partly to try to get pictures of the mushrooms in situ. We're taking care of Brian and Aaron's cats this week while they're up in Maine, so it only makes sense to get in a little hike while we're up there.

One thing we did was to write the names of the three mushrooms we had positively identified on popsicle sticks so we could look for them again and mark them along the trail. That was fun.

We hadn't brought a basket or bag, so we didn't collect any mushrooms. I don't want to try to identify new mushrooms without having them on hand to examine, but here are the pictures we took of some of the fungus of the Fells. Most of the pictures we took didn't turn out. They were all taken with the micro setting on and with a flash.

Some kind of Amanita
We thought maybe this was the famous death cap, and maybe it is, but we couldn't really get a positive identification of it. At any rate, it is definitely some kind of amanita and it is wise not to eat any amanita, just to be on the safe side.

Aliso Peak at Seaview Park

The Aliso Peak trail is a half-mile trail that starts at Seaview Park in Laguna Hills and ends at Aliso Peak. Views of the Pacific Ocean can be seen along the entire trail.

You start on the dirt path on the south side of the park. The first quarter mile is flat and offers great views inland of Saddleback Mountain and Aliso Viejo.

Picnic tables can be found about every 100 feet - ideal spots for lunch or even a quiet place to read.

Plaques along the trail also identify the local vegetation. Look for summer holly and laurel sumac along the way.

The trail seems to end at a concrete platform. A dirt trail to the left of the platform continues toward Aliso Peak. The trail drops down a steep hill with loose rocks and dirt along this ridge. Watch your step.

After you scoot alongside a residential road and farther down the hill, you suddenly begin a short and steep climb toward Aliso Peak, which stands a not-so-towering 600 feet.

The final 20 feet to the peak is extremely steep. Hikers without hiking shoes can use the wooden steps on the right side of the trail.

Views of South Laguna to the south and Aliso Beach and the Aliso Creek Golf Course to the immediate north are unadulterated, unlike the views from other coastal bluffs that are spoiled by cell-phone towers and power lines. A bench at the peak is a perfect place to sit and soak in the views of the ocean, or cuddle up for a special moment with your hiking partner.

Time for the hard part - hiking back up 800 feet to your car.

Mushroom Walk Number Three

We've been doing a very good job of getting out to the Fells for our weekly walks in the woods.

A while back, Erik and Vigo went for a little walk in the Fells alone together. Whil e they were tromping around in the forest, they ran into a botanist at the top of a big rock formation. He was counting Lady Tress Orchids.

He told Erik that this is the only place in the Fells where these flowers grow and that they are very fragile. He counted over 40 plants, about double what there had been last year.

The flowers of these orchids are miniscule, about a centimeter long.

Vigo is fairly proud to know about these flowers and to be able to lead people to their location. It's currently his favorite spot in the Fells.

the wave organ

The wave organ was built as a project for the exploratorium in San Francisco. It's an amphitheater on the shore of the San Francisco bay. The seats are made from recycled city cement from demolished curbs or graveyard stones. The sound is provided by the bay - tubes extend from underwater to the amphitheater. If you sit very quietly, a sloshing symphony will fill your ears. I hear the best time to experience it is early in the morning.

To find the wave organ, follow the shoreline north of the exploratorium. You will come to a marina, and you walk out on a little piece of land - it looks like you're just going to a yacht club, (it's near Yacht Road, in fact) but you will have to trust and when you see a yellow diamond sign that says "not a through street" you are getting close.
Tags: tiny, sounds, bay, hike, walk, tour, fun, unique, acoustics, waves, organ

Map this on Platial

kehoe beach

Kehoe Beach is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore area. Look for the sign on Pierce Point Road. From the road it's a fun little stroll through a little wilderness area (very muddy after the rains) with giant lilies growing the path. Head and down the sandy slope (which is much harder to go up once you've romped on the beach for an hour) and meet up with the beach by the creek.
It was fairly deserted when I went on a late Friday morning, there was only one other group of women with friendly elderly dogs.
It's worth going after the rain for the little waterfalls, and the beach is one of those beautiful pristine northern California beaches that the dogs love. Lots of birds and sticks, hawks, ravens and vultures circle above. Apparently, you can spot whales out in the water at the right time of year/day/I don't know.
Tags: dog, hike, beach, hawks, birds, gorgeous, lilies

Map this on Platial
After the turn onto Panoramic Highway, heading toward Mount Tamalpais, park just about anywhere on the right side of the road and head up one of the little paths into this cool hilly area.
Lots of little paths meander up and down the rocky hills. Look out for the quail in the brush, and the gophers in the holes everywhere. Up above you can often spot hawks and vultures circling. There's some pretty cool flora, too. This is another place people often let their dogs off-leash, though it is against the rules. Be considerate of other hikers, look out for bikers and coyotes. Also, park rangers do patrol the area and will ticket unleashed pets.
Tags: hike, dog, hawk, vulture, quail, coyote

Map this on Platial

Mt Tam State Park Fire Road One

This is the paved fire road that descends into the park all the way down to Alice Eastwood group camp (no pets or single/small groups of people allowed overnight, urg). Early mornings can be breathtaking with views all the way to Land's End in San Francisco, and watching the fog move over the crest of Mount Tam is one of my favorite befuddled-morning-brain non-activities.
The walk is easy going enough to take your aging parents down, and my dog enjoys the smells and sounds anyway. It's rather crowded on the weekends, but on weekdays (especially around six am) it's quiet and beautiful. Locals let their dogs off leash though it isn't allowed. Use common sense if you're going to let your dog run free.
Sadly, it leads to many much more interesting trails that are off-limits to dogs.
Tags: dog, hike, park, forest, fog, view, mt tam, redwoods

Map this on Platial

If you ever want to see somewhere absolutely stunning and far beyond the trip any San Francisco tour guide would dream of taking you, go here. First off, you have absolutely amazing forest paths, near by you have the remnants of the old San Francisco bath houses, and go all the way down the path till you hit the rock covered beach, then go left up towards the sandy part of the beach. Eventually, you'll run into the destroyed bathroom that fell off the cliff some years back and is now covered in the most elaborate, yet beautiful graffiti. On this walk, you'll also manage to get some of the most unique views of the Golden Gate bridge without having to wait for the 8000 tourists to get out of your way before you can get your picture.
Tags: beach, san francisco, graffiti, beauty, forest, nature, rocks, sand, sea shells, star fish, walk, hike, golden gate, sea gulls, thumbs up, crooked house

Map this on Platial

This Time We Had a Goal: Boletes to Eat

On this week, I felt determined to find some nice, edible boletes. We've been mushroom hunting and doing our homework and I felt confident that we should be able to hunt up something delicious.

Our friend Aaron came along with us and he also has a ton of great photos of fungus.

We made a stop at the Lady Tresse orchids, still beautiful and in bloom.

Fragrant nodding Ladies' Tresses Orchids spiranthes cernua f. odorata (read more)

We found a lot of interesting mushrooms, including this really bizarre and sort of disgusting stink horn.

Elegant Stinkhorn mutinus elegans

Unfortunately none of them were boletes.

No idea what this is

Unidentified club-shaped mushroom

Unidentified

Finally, on our way out of the woods, right next to the path, we ran into a huge patch of boletes. There were two kinds of Suillus, or maybe the same kind but some young and some old. The older kind were nasty and full of worms and we threw them out.

old, wormy suillus mushrooms

The others looked fairly appetizing, so we cooked one up to try. It was delicious. To be on the safe side, we only ate a tiny amount and put the rest on the refridgerator for a couple days to make sure we weren't going to get indigestion from them.

fresh, yummy suillus mushrooms

A couple days later I put them in a quiche. It was a mistake to put them in the quiche. They were pretty much lost in there and were much nicer just sauteed in butter.

In case anyone is worried, we aren't giving Vigo mushrooms. He doesn't like cooked mushrooms these days and we've read that kids should avoid wild mushrooms anyhow.

Beautiful off-leash park in the heart of LA. I have seen the ocean (about 15 miles away) on clear days. Like much of LA, it's a great place to spot stars (if you're into that), but it's an even better place to spend a couple of hours on the sun-drenched trails - be sure to bring water for yourself and the mutt.
Tags: los angeles, hike, park, views, hollywood, dog

Map this on Platial

Land's End

This place rocks. I went on a fine Saturday afternoon, and it was relatively quiet. Trails lead off the main path everywhere, with steps going down to at least one beach. The views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands are awesome. Look out for people cruising, if you know what I mean.
Strictly on-leash.
Tags: views, beach, dog, hike, golden gate, headlands, cruising

Map this on Platial

San Clemente Beach Trail

This recently opened, 2.3-mile trail spans from North Beach to Calafia Beach. You can stroll along the crashing sound of waves filling the air. The scenery offers a vision of what Southern California is all about - surfers catching waves on a day with a decent swell, sea gulls gather on the sand, and families simply out enjoying a day at the beach.
