Nagog Pond

There is a great bicycle map available from Pocket Rides showing how to get to this pond from the Concord T station.

From the website:
Nagog Hill Conservation Area’s 158 acres provide trails that are generally wide, well marked, and in good condition. Much of the area was once cleared farmland, and there are many dry-stone walls delineating the boundaries of the former farm fields. The property was acquired by the town in a series of purchases between 1975 and 1980, using both state and town funds.

Two accesses serve this area. The main entrance is from Nagog Hill Road, next to the horse corral, 1 mile from Acton Center. There is a parking lot with kiosk, trail maps, and other information. The second access is via a corridor that leads from the contiguous Grassy Pond Conservation Area, located on Nagog Hill Road’s westerly side. A sign, easily seen from the road across from the Grassy Pond consarea parking lot, marks this entrance.
Tags: hiking, pond, water

Map this on Platial

Berry Pond

There is a great bicycle map available from Pocket Rides showing how to get to this pond from the Ballardvale T station.

Berry Pond is the area's day use facility, and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pond has a sand beach and new washhouse with flush toilets and changing stalls set against a beautiful backdrop of trees reflected in the surface of the pond. Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Grills and picnic tables are available for anyone wishing to picnic at Berry Pond.

Lorraine Park Campground, located about 2 miles from the Headquarters on Jenkins Rd., contains 91 sizeable campsites that are spread out sufficiently to provide a real "forest" camping experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a grill, and although no electric or water hookups are available, the bathrooms do have hot water showers. Camping is offered mid-April to mid-October; office hours are from 9am-9pm.
Tags: hiking, swim, fishing, camping, swimming, water, trails, showers, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, trailer, swimming hole, picinic, state forest, accessible beaches, accessible camping, accessible restrooms, hunting restrictions, picnicking, skiing crosscountry, r.v., walking trails

Map this on Platial
Day 2 of the Trip. One of our travelmates left the team and flew back to Tehran as we were warned by the locals about the security issues about the place. I was also shaken a little bit. We decided to spend the night despite every thing. We slept by the shore beside a lonely fishing village. There was a security post as the Pakistan border was very close. A couple of police man paid a couple of visits and asked for our IDs. The morning after was like heaven. This is the end of Iran. The furthest you can go in this country. As we woke up a couple of fishermen were pulling their nets off the see. We helped and tell you the truth it was not easy. The shore was beautiful and unspoiled as no tourist (not even hikers) come here.
Tags: hiking, adventures, oman coastline

Map this on Platial

Le Hunt, KS - Ghost Town

        Location Description:

LeHunt is an old abandoned cement plant and town outside of Independence, now in ruins. Also onsite is an old cemetery. The ruins are said to be haunted by the ghost of a worker who died there. There is also evidence that people have gathered there to perform some sort of magic rituals.

History:
When Montgomery County was developing the oil and gas industry at the turn of the century, an area northwest of Independence was receiving some industrial attention. The portion of land known later as Le Hunt was beginning to boom as a new cement company, which had a capacity of producing 4,000 barrels of cement daily, was beginning to start its operations. Several hundred employees worked at the plant, and a small business district sprang up under the cloudy gray smoke belching from Le Hunt's smokestacks.
Tags: hiking, History, Cemetery, Pittsburg, Parsons, Cherryvale, Wild West, Ghost, Ghost Town, Independence, Elk City, Le Hunt

Map this on Platial

Mt. Rainier National Park

        From wikipedia:
"Mount Rainier National Park is a United States National Park located in southeast Pierce County and northeast Lewis County in Washington state.[1] It was established on 2 March 1899, the fifth national park in the United States. The park contains 368 square miles (950 km2) including all of Mount Rainier, a 14,410-foot (4,392 m) stratovolcano.[2] The mountain rises abruptly from the surrounding land with elevations in the park ranging from 1,600 feet (490 m) to over 14,000 feet (4,300 m). The highest point in the Cascade Range, around it are valleys, waterfalls, subalpine wildflower meadows, old growth forest and more than 26 glaciers. The volcano is often shrouded in clouds that dump enormous amounts of rain and snow on the peak every year and hide it from the crowds that head to the park on weekends."

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

While the hiking here is great (the park is on the Pacific Crest Trail), the main reason to visit this park is Burney Falls. At 129 feet, they're certainly not the biggest falls around, but take my word for it, they are spectacularly beautiful.

A word of advice about vacationing here, though. I have yet to try camping in this area, but I'm guessing that it would be a far superior experience to lodging in the nearby town of Fall River Mills. The only place to shop for food was a tiny convenience store, and the only restaurant in town was a nightmare. If you're intent on staying at a motel, the town of Burney might be a better bet- it at least has a Safeway.
Tags: waterfall, hiking, scenic, nature, falls, scenery

Map this on Platial

Lava Beds National Monument

The lava tubes here make for some great amateur spelunking! If you're not worried about looking nerdy, you might want to bring a hard hat. I had one and was glad of it. The ceilings within the caves get very low and some parts will need to be crawled through.

The hiking here is great, but bring sun protection.

This site is also home to carved petroglyphs and painted pictographs left by native peoples. The majority of these are located at what is now called Petroglyph Point. (I'm quite sad because I didn't know about the rock art when I was visiting here and I didn't see it... Guess I'll have to go back now!)

The native Modoc people used their knowledge of these caves to help them fight off the US army during the Modoc War of 1872-1873.

Crater Lake National Park

From the National Park Service website:
"Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain range, 100 miles (160 km) east of the Pacific Ocean. It lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, created when the 12,000 foot (3,660 meter) high Mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption.

"Generous amounts of winter snow, averaging 533 inches (1,354 cm) per year, supply the lake with water. There are no inlets or outlets to the lake. Crater Lake, at 1,943 feet (592 meters) deep, is the seventh deepest lake in the world and the deepest in the United States. Evaporation and seepage prevent the lake from becoming any deeper."
Tags: forest, hiking, wildlife, national park, wilderness

Map this on Platial

        From wikipedia:
"Olympic National Park is located in the U.S. state of Washington, in the Olympic Peninsula. The park can be divided into three basic regions: the Pacific coastline, the Olympic Mountains, and the temperate rainforest. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt originally created Olympic National Monument in 1909 and after Congress voted to authorize a redesignation to National Park status, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the legislation in 1938. In 1976, Olympic National Park became an International Biosphere Reserve, and in 1981 it was designated a World Heritage Site. In 1988, almost all of the Olympic Peninsula was designated as the Olympic Wilderness, further enhancing the protection of the region."

        Vacation!

This was a wonderful vacation. I drew every day. I went to the beach. I spent a night in la Paz. I got to hang out with good friends.

Highlights of the trip include Serena bringing her lettuce sprouts with us to La Paz to keep them watered and happy, having the hotel rooftop bar all to ourselves in La Paz, Brent's cooking, the rocky beach, making up stories about the ruins of the old cannery, and all of the hanging out.

We went back for another walk on Monday (Labor Day). This was partly to help Vigo get over his fear of yellow jackets in the Fells and partly to try to get pictures of the mushrooms in situ. We're taking care of Brian and Aaron's cats this week while they're up in Maine, so it only makes sense to get in a little hike while we're up there.

One thing we did was to write the names of the three mushrooms we had positively identified on popsicle sticks so we could look for them again and mark them along the trail. That was fun.

We hadn't brought a basket or bag, so we didn't collect any mushrooms. I don't want to try to identify new mushrooms without having them on hand to examine, but here are the pictures we took of some of the fungus of the Fells. Most of the pictures we took didn't turn out. They were all taken with the micro setting on and with a flash.

Some kind of Amanita
We thought maybe this was the famous death cap, and maybe it is, but we couldn't really get a positive identification of it. At any rate, it is definitely some kind of amanita and it is wise not to eat any amanita, just to be on the safe side.

These aren't mushrooms, but they are pretty neat.

Drive up to the top (only the insane would bike the steep and winding roads) and just breathe in the 360 degree views as far as the eye can see. Once you've drunk your fill, head elsewhere inside Moran State Park to hike the trails.
Tags: hiking, parks, orcas island, mt constitution

Map this on Platial
From the yellow marker, which is the base, you are transported to the top of a Mountain. A California State Park! Where it seems few know about... until you reach the top and find what may be a hidden Treasure.
People from the World over travel here to experience incredible hiking, some walk with snow skis (There is still Snow in June!). An amazing picture location.
After a real workout just walking around, you will find a Cafeteria and just beyond a special curtained area, a luxurious Fine Dinning experience that you will remember for many years to come. I had the Duck… a True treat. I can’t wait till I visit again.

But, I saved the Best for last! The Ride Up… In a word…Wow!
Going down is just as much fun. A Fun Family Event. Bring clothing for both Warm/Hot and Cold temperatures. Oh, and perhaps Chewing Gum for on the way up, to make the ride easier for those who may need it. Let me know if you enjoy your visit!
A true California treasure.

Holy Jim Trail

The road from hell leads to a heaven-like waterfall.

By BRIAN QUINES
SqueezeOC.com

Distance: 2.8 miles

Time: 1.5 hours

Difficulty: Easy hike at the beginning. Progressively becomes difficult with low tree canopies and multiple stream crossings via stepping stones and large branches traversing the water. Be prepared, also, to climb over roots and large rocks.

Caution: The canyon is a thriving habitat that includes mountain lions, snakes and patches of poison oak. Long pants are suggested.

Trailhead: At the end of Trabuco Creek Road, 4.7 miles east of Live Oak Canyon Road in Trabuco Canyon.

$5 Adventurer’s Pass for parking available at the trailhead.

Note: Trabuco Creek Road is a very rough dirt path resembling uncharted moon territory more than a road. Large rocks, potholes and washboard-like dips are common.

Why we like it: Short hike with a moderate grade through a lush canyon to Holy Jim Falls, a secluded, 17-foot waterfall.

Details: The adventure begins as you turn off Live Oak Canyon Road onto Trabuco Creek Road, which doesn’t receive much maintenance. The 4.7 miles to the trailhead may be the longest and bumpiest drive you’ve experienced.

The road is barely driveable in a small car or other low-lying vehicles; you’ll have to drive very slow. I recommend using a lunar rover for this stretch of road, but an off-road truck or SUV will suffice.

The 4-wheel adventure ends at a parking lot on your left. Park here and obtain an Adventurer’s Pass at the kiosk.

Proceed north on foot up a small hill and into the canyon, where small cabins appear. These cabins sprouted in the late 1800s when beekeepers made a living here.

One of the beekeepers was James T. Smith, who had a nasty swearing habit. He earned the name "Cussin’ Jim" until government cartographers renamed him "Holy Jim" – the name of the canyon today.

You’ll come to a steel gate after .5 miles. The vegetation quickly thickens as you trek deeper into the canyon.

There are seven stream crossings in the next mile; some are very easy to traverse while others are difficult thanks to large boulders, overhanging tree limbs or loose stepping stones.

Natural canopies create tunnels along the way and the steep canyon walls and trees provide shade.

Follow the sign toward the falls when you meet the Holy Jim Trail after the last stream crossing. The falls await you about 400 yards away.

This is probably the trickiest part of the hike: trekking very close to the creek bed in the canyon, which is now significantly narrower.

You can hear Holy Jim Falls just ahead, with water falling into the small pond below. It’s no Niagara Falls, but the tranquility of this hideaway with its riparian habitat enclosed by towering canyon walls is certainly special.

Eat a sandwich or take a quick dunk in the chilly pond before heading back.

Also consider a car wash after driving out of the canyon. Your vehicle will be filthy!
Tags: waterfall, trail, hiking, outdoor, nature, trek, holy jim trail

Map this on Platial

Walking/Listening/Recording (sound installation)

Walking/Listening/Recording: Tryon Creek (2006) is a 10-channel sound installation set along the Trillium Trail in Tryon Creek State Park, Portland, Oregon. Along the initial 250ft passage of the Trillium Trail, speakers from hidden locations cast layers of found sounds interwoven with poetic murmurs and field recordings from around the Red Fox Bridge area in the park. William Stafford's poem "Walking with Your Eyes Shut" inspired the use of poetry in the piece - to form a dialogue between the visual and audible experience. These layers of sound are intended to engage visitors in a sonic narrative along the trail.

From the California State Parks website:
"This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park’s trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner’s Cove, across from the campground. The park’s name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the black oystercatcher. The park includes primitive and equestrian campsites."
Tags: beautiful, hiking, camping, wildlife, nature, beach

Map this on Platial

Angel Island

Angel Island was the Ellis Island of the west, but also played its part in one of our nation's uglier moments while implementing the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, becoming the location where racial profiling was used as part of interrogation techniques at the immigration station. During WWII, it was also used as a US Army POW processing center.

ngel Island is one of the most picturesque places in the bay, giving panoramic views of the city skyline and the bridges. A wonderful all day excursion with a stop over in Tiburon for drinks or lunch. You can bring your bikes on the ferry if you like. It's a about a 2 hour walk around the island. Ferry info is in the web link above.
Tags: hiking, picnic, tourist

Map this on Platial

Perfect Family Retreat

After several weeks of business travel, rushed holiday preparations and an abundance of other obligations keeping us from any real quality family time, we took a spontaneous trip to Skamania Lodge.

+Outdoor rock jacuzzi amidst fresh fallen snow
+Pool, sauna, hot tubs and new age meditative music
+Free 24 hour Starbucks station which includes Apple Cider, Hot Chocolate, Tea and Coffee (No Green Tea).
+Fantastic local wine selection at the restaurant (Prime Rib++)
+Library stocked with board games and books for all ages.
+Stocked honor basket which came in very handy at 4am when we had to bribe Tabor to take his asthma medicine with eating M&Ms.

Emiko asked me to read to her from The World Is Flat which I have already read but was excited to see again. She asked questions about the environment and asked me to keep reading for 30 minutes while she drew. It was the part about compassionate flatists and for a five year old and she completely got it. The vague theories of "wasting" made sense in this bigger context, hearing something positive about McDonalds (supply chain standards) made her happy ;-).

Sure there was some whining and some sibling fights but otherwise, utter familial bliss with marshmallows on top.

Described by some as the "the Yosemite of Orange County," Fremont is rich in diversity and history lore. The Nature Conservancy conducts docent-led hikes , mountain bike rides and equestrian rides enabling nature-lovers to acquaint themselves with the canyon's wonders. Reservations for docent-led outings are required due to the area's sensitive habitat. As part of a comprehensive environmental assessment, The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with The Irvine Company, will study the area to determine expanded access opportunities in the future.
Tags: biking, hiking, nature, fremont canyon

Map this on Platial
