Tower Theatre

This small independent theater opened in 1938 and is, according to their website, "dedicated to bringing the finest in independent, foreign and specialty film to Sacramento's film lovers".

I love this place. The theaters are small, intimate, and full of character. I love everything from the uneven floors to the bizarrely tall appearance of the rooms.

The Tower Cafe is right next door. The atmosphere is fantastic, making it a great place to just sit and have a drink, if nothing else. Sweet pastries seem to be one of their speacialties. Apparently the french toast is marvelous, but I've never tried it.

The theater could be in trouble if too many new movie screens open downtown. If you're a Sac area film lover, please give this place your business and visit http://www.savethetowertheatre.org/index.html
Tags: movies, architecture, historic, movie theater

Map this on Platial

Crest Theatre

The Crest is one of several historic movie theaters in Sacramento. This venue also frequently hosts concerts, lectures, and other live events since the individual theaters within are very big and can accommodate that sort of thing.
Films shown in this place are generally the artsy indie type. I love going to movies here because the ticket prices are actually less expensive than any of the regular corporate theaters nearby. Totally awesome!

The Crest Cafe is right next door. (I've never tried it.)
Tags: movies, theater, theatre, concerts, architecture, independent, historic, live events

Map this on Platial

The Royal Parks

Every year, London's eight Royal Parks host millions of Londoners and tourists. The parks, which cover a total of five thousand acres, are: Bushy Park, The Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, The Regent's Park, Richmond Park, and St. James Park.

The Royal Parks are home to a menagerie of historical locales, architecture, statues and memorials, as well as extensive gardens, parkland, sports areas and entertainment venues. Diversity of uses within the parks encourages patronage by a wide variety of park-goers, from picnickers and walkers to scholars and travelers. And because there is an active effort to preserve the parks and their amenities, future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy them, as well.

The Royal Parks are open to anyone and everyone at no cost. Known as "London's Personal Space," the Royal Parks offer respite and relaxation in the heart of one of the Western world's oldest cities.
Tags: gardens, memorial, historic, statues, the royal parks, londons personal space

Map this on Platial

Apartheid Ends

1991/06/17. Most of the social legislation that provided the legal basis for apartheid is repealed, though segregation remains deeply entrenched in South African society.

Although the government had the power to suppress virtually all criticism of its policies, there was always some opposition to apartheid within South Africa.

Apartheid also received international censure. South Africa was forced to withdraw from the Commonwealth in 1961 when it became apparent that other member countries would not accept its racial policies. In 1985 both the United Kingdom and the United States imposed selective economic sanctions on South Africa. In response to these and other pressures, the South African government abolished the “pass” laws in 1986, although blacks were still prohibited from living in designated white areas and the police were granted broad emergency powers.

In a more fundamental shift of policy, however, the government of South African president F.W. de Klerk in 1990–91 repealed most of the social legislation that provided the legal basis for apartheid, including the Population Registration Act. Systematic racial segregation remained deeply entrenched in South African society, though, and continued on a de facto basis. In 1993 a new constitution enfranchised blacks and other racial groups, and all-race national elections in 1994 produced a coalition government with a black majority. These developments marked the end of legislated apartheid.
The Byrd Theatre :: Richmond, VA

The Byrd, which opened in 1928, is one of America's true movie palaces. Seating about 1,400 patrons (both downstairs and balcony) the theater features intricate plaster mouldings, polished marble walls, and a tremendous crystal chandelier. The theater shows mostly second-run movies for $1.99 (the price was just 99 cents until recent years) and occasionally hosts other events (like the annual VCU French Film Festival). On Friday and Saturday nights, theater patrons can hear Bob Gulledge play on "the mighty Wurlitzer organ"--the only one nationally played on a regualr basis, aside from the one at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Weekday patrons get to enjoy the litter PSA, shot in the 1980s at the Byrd... which could well hold the record for most-played PSA anywhere.
Tags: carytown, virginia, movie, historic, richmond, movie theater

Map this on Platial

Island Hub, catch the inter-island ferry here

There is a lot to see and do on George's Island. It is the hub of the islands. From here you can catch the ferry to the other islands.

Check the website for schedules.

The inter-island ferry is free.

The boat pictured in the main thumbnail is not running this year, unfortunately. It's too bad. The captain was great. We heard a rumor that he ended up not getting paid last year and couldn't work the route this year. If that's true, it's a shame.

Instead, we had to pass through a cloud of black smoke to board the Stinky Lynn (pictured to the right), fuming up the harbor and dropping oil all the way. One of the rangers told us the boat had been cited by the Coast Guard already and that they were waiting for a new boat.
Tags: ferry, island, park, fun, history, historic, hub, interesting

Map this on Platial

Opened in January of 1989, Engine Co. No. 28 is an American restaurant reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York — mahogany booths, granite bar, Ella Fitzgerald music in the background — set in a beautifully restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse (original architecture includes 18-foot pressed tin ceilings and red brick flooring). The restaurant's atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed with a staff that is both friendly and attentive.
Tags: restaurant, historic

Map this on Platial
In 1738, the Spanish governor of Florida chartered Fort Mose as a settlement for freed Africans who had fled slavery in the British Carolinas. When Spain ceded Florida to Britain in 1763, the inhabitants of Fort Mose migrated to Cuba. Nice historic hotel. Apparently the party for the Gone With the Wind premiere was held here. There are fairly large suites, complete with kitchens and laundry facilities. It's decent, but the rooms were renovated in the late 80's or early 90's, so they lack a modern or historic appeal.
Tags: hotels, historic, atlanta

Map this on Platial
