Certainly an experience. And be warned: if it is your birthday, the owner may spank you.

We ate here our first night in Victoria, not knowing much about the place except that it had a line out the door so it must be good. We were not disappointed! This is an extremely lively Italian restaurant, with tables squeezed close and conversations begging to be eavesdropped. If you're looking for a romantic Italian dining experience, go elsewhere. Pagliacci's is all about the food and conversation. The food is unusually good and worth the wait. Expect to pay $10-20.

EAT Osteria Stecca Being someone who finds it hard to resist a good, pedigree Italian, I'll be heading to the hood this weekend. No, I'm not roughing it in Peckham but doing some deluxe slumming in St John's Wood where Osteria Stecca has just opened. I like Blenheim Terrace. Okay, it's a bit cashmere knickers, but it's one of those streets that makes you feel like you're on holiday; all twinkly lights, welcoming restaurant facades and casually parked cars. And Stecca ticks all the boxes too. Chef-owner Stefano Stecca cooked in Michelin-starred restaurants across Italy before coming to work at Zafferano and Brunello over here so the food, as you'd expect, is a range of nicely turned out classics like buffalo mozzarella with grilled aubergine and aubergine caviar and linguini with a red mullet and cherry tomato sauce. Or there's always Negronis and stuzzichini at the bar. Either way, it's a bit more glam than Peckham - I should know, I grew up there. This is a fun restaurant set inside an old brick warehouse. The decor can only be described as eclectic, like the attic at a grandparent's house with trunks and shelves full of fascinating clothes, toys and memorabilia. Kids will find the decor endlessly fascinating. The food is satisfying and well-prepared. The menu is varied with something for everyone, from Mexican to pasta to burgers. This is a great and inexpensive place to bring the family. The place is packed on weekends, so avoid those times unless you don't mind a long wait.

Bridge is the newest restaurant from the group that owns Koi, which means that the music is banging, the guy at the next table really is Ludacris, and the food, pan-peninsular Italian in this case, tends to be light, based on impeccable ingredients, and lovely to behold: thin petals of vitello tonnato arranged like fugu sashimi; delicate asparagus ravioli with butter and sage; a truly lovely, Koi-quality tuna tartare. Of all the neighborhood pizza parlors in Los Angeles touted as the best this side of New Haven, one of them actually has to be the best. And my vote goes to Casa Bianca, especially if the pizza happens to include the fried eggplant, the sweetly spiced homemade sausage — or preferably both. The lines are extremely long, but the crust is chewy, and speckled with enough carbony, bubbly, burnt bits to make each bite slightly different from the last. Remarkable. Tre Venezie, a tiny Italian restaurant in Pasadena’s Old Town, could easily pass for one of the better trattorias in Udine — the cooking, mostly in the Slavic-influenced style of Friuli, northeast of Venice, is superb. True, the careful authenticity of the food must be balanced against the fact that dinner with a nice wine can cost not much less than a roundtrip ticket to Venice itself, and the wine list is egregiously overpriced. But I love the orzotto, a soothing Friulian stew of tripe and grain that emphasizes the gentle muskiness, the slippery contours of the meat, without an offending chile in sight. 119 W. The mastery of the wood-burning oven at Vincenti can be deduced from a single bite — a scallop, say, sprinkled with bread crumbs and baked in its shell until it just sizzles. The adjacent rotisserie turns out the best restaurant version of porchetta in Los Angeles, loin and belly wrapped into a spiral, seasoned with fennel, and spit-roasted to a crackling, licorice-y succulence. Vincenti is the real thing, a spare, elegant embassy of modern Italian cooking: minimally sauced pastas and house-cured meats; pungent flavors and abundant herbs; and an obsession with grilled steak that is unmistakably Italian. Perfection does not come cheap, and it is certainly possible to eat several mediocre Italian meals elsewhere in this neighborhood for the price of a single superb one here. Got to be one of the best if not the singular best Italian I have ever had. These guys really are from Italy, speak Italian, serve Italian, there are Italians eating there, it was superb. Ravoli was superb, service fast, Tiramisu was fabulous, everything, I dont think you can make a mistake ordering anything here, even if it is is not what you were expecting it will most likely be perfect in some othe way you were not expecting.

Our standby for Italian. Almost always get the tagliatelle al ragu. Recently moved into a great new spot, although it's much larger so the feel is less intimate and I think they are still working out the kinks in terms of the staff/service of a larger place. Also, parking is now much more of a challenge. We just tried Tavolata and think that La Spiga now has a rival for Italian in Seattle.

A bona fide alternative to La Spiga for authentic Italian in Seattle. Opened by Union chef Ethan Stowell after a few years of anticipation, but it was definitely worth the wait. Octopus salad and minestrone are amazing. Pastas are all great. Haven't had the guts to try the veal brain ravioli. I've never seen donuts for desert in Italy, but hey they're good.

This is another location you'll see a lot on my map. Mondello is an Italian restaurant that is (mostly) family run, good prices, excellent food. Vivian, who is hesitant to compliment anything said last night, "I think their pasta is the best I've ever had." Almost every time we go, the restaurant is nearly full. Last night it was overflowing with two large parties. We sat at the bar. When we left the office last night I said, "I need Stracciatella". It was all I wanted but the special breaded steak, I could not say no too. Vivian had the Spaghetti Alle Vonogle, which is on a very generous portion of clams cooked with a butter and herb sauce. The clams were very perfect. Vivian also makes the best Tiramisu I've eaten, so I usually wince when she orders it. But Mondello's was wonderful. Light, not oversoaked, not too sweet.
