A Multitude of Saints Rise from Hell

Jesus Raises a great Multitude from Hell on Easter Sunday

Matthew 27:52-53

"and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

The Ante-Nicene Library is a collection of manuscripts written by important Christians from the time of Jesus Christ to the Council of Nicea (325 AD). These manuscripts were not included in the Christian Bible, so they are non-canonical.

Within this library are numerous writings about how Jesus descended into Hades while His body lay in the tomb, and that numerous saints (one report 12,000) rose from the dead with Jesus on Easter Sunday. These reportedly remained on earth for the 40 days Jesus remained after having risen and ascended into Heaven with Jesus. There are many reports of these risen saints having been seen in Jerusalem after Easter Sunday.

The Gospel of Nicodemus, Vol 8, Chapter I:

Then Rabbi Addas and Rabbi Finees, and Rabbi Egias, the three men who had come from Galilee, testifying that they had seen Jesus taken up into heaven, rose up in the midst of the multitude of the chiefs of the Jews, and said before the priests and the Levites, who had been called together to the council of the Lord: "When we were coming from Galilee we met at the Jordan a very great multitude of men, fathers who had been some time dead"...And they went, and walked around all the region of the Jordan and of the mountains, and they were coming back without finding them. And, behold, suddenly there appeared coming down from Mount Amalech a very great number, as it were, twelve thousand men, who had risen with the Lord. And though they recognized very many there, they were not able to say anything to them for fear and the angelic vision; and they stood at a distance gazing and hearing them, how they walked along singing praises, and saying; "The Lord has risen again from the dead, as He has said; let us all exult and be glad, since He reins for ever. Then those who had been sent were astonished and fell to the ground for fear, and received the answer from them, that they should see Karinus and Leucius in their own houses. And they rose up and went to their houses, and found them spending their time in prayer.

Concerning the King of Edessa, Vol 8, Page 653:

"He humbled and emptied and abased Himself, and was crucified, and descended to Hades and broke through the enclosure which had never been broken through before, and raised up the dead, and descended alone, and ascended with a great multitude to His Father."

Not exactly live coverage of Barack Obama inauguration

I love politics and live within 45 minutes of Washington, D.C. So what was I doing in Ben Yehuda Square during Barack Obama's historic presidential inauguration? Lamenting the fact that I had purchased my tickets to Israel back in October, 2008. Back then, it was unclear who would win the election. On Inauguration Day 2009, I was millions of miles away (or so it seemed) on the other side of the world, watching everything unfold from a satellite feed 7-hours later. Pretty cool.

Ben Yehuda Square is a great place to hang out. There are shops, street musicians, cafes, and loads of Israeli culture. On the day of the inauguration, a camera crew from Germany was filming people's thoughts and hopes for Obama's presidency. I volunteered to be filmed.

Jerusalem

Referred to as al-Baitul Maqaddas (the Holy House) or Baitul Maqdis (the House of the Sanctuary) in the Qur'an.

Contains the third holiest site in Islam - Al-Aqsa.

Taken by Khalifah Umar after reinforcing the Muslim army with 4000 horses. A treaty of capitulation was signed with the Patriarch (Sophronius) which ended the siege.

At that time, there were 12,000 Greeks and 50,000 natives in the city. The Greeks were ordered to leave in 3 days and the natives made to pay tributes of 5 dinars per rich person, 4 dinars for middle class and 3 dinars for the lower classes. The aged and children were exempted.

Umar's first object upon entering the city was to find the Sacred Rock (as-Sakhrah), the site to which Muhammad (pbuh) was carried on the night of Miraj.

He was directed to the Church of the Resurrection bythe Patriarch, who said "this is the Mosque of David". But Umar refused to accept it, as he said, "the Apostle of Allah (Muhammad) described the place to me, and it was not like this." The went to every church in the city until they came to a gate (now called Babul Muhammad i.e. Gate of Muhammad), and creeping on his knees to the central sewer and standing up, Umar declared "by Him in whose Hand is my life, this is the place which the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) described to us." He then ordered a mosque (Masjidul Aqsa) to be built there.

The city fell to the Franks in AH 491, amidst massive killing of Muslims. In a space of 7 days, 70,000 Muslims were killed in Al-Aqsa alone.

Salaahud-din (Saladin) re-captured the city later on.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Nothing feeds a late-night study session better than an order of hummus with pita, some baba gannouj for dipping, a cucumber salad with yogurt and mint, and a big, huge Coca-Cola. Jerusalem, practically located on the University of Denver campus, has been proving this for years.

WHAT TO GET: Falafel
Tags: events, reviews, denver, jerusalem

Map this on Platial

Jerusalem
