Pleasure Bay

Owned and operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, this area provides an abundance of recreation and historical learning opportunities for the visitor. Accessible from downtown, the HarborWalk extends along Pleasure Bay, with a detour to Castle Island. Pleasure Bay is a calm, enclosed lagoon with a sandy beach for swimming. Pleasure Bay is one of the most popular swimming and sunning beaches in the City. Foot showers and water fountains are located on-site. Because the bay is fully enclosed by the man-made Head Island Causeway, water and sediment quality are consistently high. The causeway located behind the beach provides a great walk way for strolling around Pleasure Bay.

Originally freestanding, Castle Island has been connected to the mainland since the 1930s, when streetcars brought bathers to Pleasure Bay. Fort Independence, located on Castle Island, is a five pointed granite structure. The current structure is the eighth fort to occupy this site and contains over 172,687 linear feet of hammered stone and was constructed under the direction of Colonel Sylvanus Thayer between 1834 and 1851. The fort is open during the summer months, and visitors can explore independently or take a free tour. The fort and the island are on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and Fort Independence is a National Historic Landmark. There are views to Logan Airport and the Harbor Islands, and visitors can observe boating activity in the Harbor. The area is excellent for jogging, walking, picnicking, biking and hiking, and there is a fishing pier and swimming area.
Tags: beach, swimming, kites, walking, sun basking, sun

Map this on Platial

Jeffrey Open Space Trail

Bordering the east side of Jeffrey Road, the Jeffrey Open Space Trail is a recreation and open space corridor park that will span Irvine's entire north-south length. This rare community amenity will make it possible for residents (if they're so inclined and can muster the stamina) to bicycle, jog or walk, literally, from one end of the city to the other. As envisioned in concept, the trail will ultimately link up with trails leading deep into the vast preserved wildlands north and south of the city. Thus, a unique sage to sea outdoor experience will emerge.

The trail will feature a dual trail system: an 11-foot-wide paved trail for bicyclists, and a parallel five-foot-wide unpaved path for joggers and walkers. At numerous points, the trail will pass through cool wooded areas and open to small and large parks and grassy meadows. At these picturesque junctures, residents will be able to enjoy picnics, kite flying and other passive recreational activities.
Tags: jeffrey open space trail, walk, bike, trail, bird watching, parks, kites

Map this on Platial

Blackheath Bike and Kite Festival

The Blackheath Bike and Kite festival looks like it should be a great event - it is happening over the weekend of 14th & 15th June, on the heath, and from Lewisham Council’s website, it looks like it will be free of charge. The bugle will be flying a kite (if permitted). In the meantime, some practice will be necessary. In other kite-related news, this blog post by M Johnson demonstrates attaching a mobile phone to a kite, and videoing the results! The bugle feels that this shows a high degree of trust in both the strength of the mobile phone, and skill of the kite flier… Not sure my “controlled landings” would be up to this…

Ariel kite photography has been a big thing on the web for a while- I remember reading about someone who built a camera timer based on an ice-cube and an elastic band - when the kite is in the air, the ice-cube melts, forcing a piece of wood to press the shutter on the camera (this back in 1999, before mobile phones and digital cameras were cheap as Blackheath fish & chips). Just found the page - it’s a bit dusty, but if you blow on it a bit, you should be able to find it behind this link.

If anyone has any examples of Blackheath ariel photography, please let me know!
Tags: event, bike, bikes, festival, mobile phone, kite, kites, blackheath, lewisham, ariel kite photography, ariel photography, ariel photos, blackheath bike and kite festival, kite photography, kite photos

Map this on Platial
