Spark fills many crafty needs, but their knitting stuff is on the lower level. They have a few books and magazines, a limited range of needles, and lovely high-end (expensive) yarns. They have a drop-in crafting membership which I've never tried, but my knitting gang had a really fun time one night hanging out there knitting as a free trial. The renovation of the building is totally beautiful. They sell some local designers' wares. They have TONS of scrapbooking stuff.

The Rosebud isn't necessarily a great place to knit, but one of the waitresses there is an avid knitter and it is fun to sit at the bar and talk to her and check out her latest projects. Last time I saw her, she was making a little side money knitting custom scarves for really cheap for some of the regular customers.

This is one of the best Goodwill stores I have ever know. It is huge. It is friendly. The people who run it are really nice and the people who work there are friendly and don't seem to hate their jobs passionately as is sometimes the case in a Goodwill or Salvation Army. Every once in a while I get a lucky yarn score here, though rarely do I see needles.

The Diesel is huge, but even so it can be hard to find a place to sit on the weekend. Go all the way to the back for the cozy kntialicious sofa spots. Their tea service is a bit lacking (no teapots, only glasses). They have a pool table, booths, a counter with stools, little round tables. It's a wonderful place to sit and watch snow fall. Wireless internet costs about $7 a day. They have a photo booth.

Daycare Park

Three different daycares congregate here every single weekday morning. It's a great place to hang out with your kid. Local people bring their old toys here and drop them off, so it is full of old plastic wagons, scooters, toy gas pumps, playhouses, annd one very large sdandbox tugboat. The park was also renovated this year. One of the coolest things about this park is that the flowering trees attract honey bees from a local hive. They're gentle honey bees. I've never seen a kid gett stung, thought they run through the water puddle where the bees congregate to drink. Excellent climbing trees!

I'm a professional designer who hasn't done a lick of design work in about six months. I've worked in costume design for street theater, fashion design, interior design and gallery installation, and curating. My most recent works have been a series of very creepy doll portraits of livejournal users, and handbags made of recycled men's wool pants (which were in the Christmas shopping guide of DWELL magazine, excuse my bragging, but it was my first solo press). I also wrote and taught an after-school class where 10-year-olds learned about immigration in their community and then designed and hand sewed dolls representing immigrants, with little stories to go along with them. Anyone interested in that can let me know and I'll pass the course outline on for free. Great fun. My crafty passtimes include knitting, especially socks, drawing, drawing, drawing, paper mache, sewing, doll making, and printing.

This little shop is jammed full. Yarn, yarn everywhere. They make the most of every possible nook and cranny. I like this place also because they have a lot of different kinds of knitting needles in all different sizes. Also, the people who work here are younger and hipper than in the other stores I go to. I reccomend buying supplies here and then knitting your way through a good documentary at the Capitol Theater across the street.

FABULOUS little hole in the wall yarn store. The yarn is SO fantastic, and CHEAP...even to Americans with the high exchange rate. Miguel and Jennifer were SO helpful and when I return to Spain I will definitely be looking them up. They sell all sorts of yarn, knitting needles and accessories and even crochet tools

I confess I haven't been there but I love this concept - (from the I Knit website) "I Knit started life as a small group of friends who met one night at The Beehive pub in Vauxhall, London and who shared a common thread - knitting. Gerard wanted to meet other knitters who didn't mind dropping a few stitches over a pint or two, and who wanted to get out and knit instead of sitting in front of the TV at home. Since that first meeting the I Knit London group has met in over 20 different venues across the capital and continues to do so, every two weeks, attracting knitters of all ages and abilities for a social, creative, and sometimes drunken, experience. The knitting group is still the fundamental driving force behind everything we do."

This is the first place I ever went to for knitting supplies. I was working at Elmo's Diner up the street and a friend of mine there was a serious knitter. She taught a lot of us how to knit and eventually started working part time at Cozy. Heather, if you see this, you are a natural teacher! Thanks for giving us all the gift of craft! The shop is small, but they have everything you need. They are also very friendly and helpful and not at all snooty. Bring in your knitting conundrums and they'll help you out.

This convenient store is on the ground floor of a pink house right across from the parking lot of the Porter Square mall with the Stop and Shop. It took me a while to notice it was a knitting store. That weird little street along the parking lot has a sort of no-man's land feeling to it. The woman who owns the store is helpful. She has a lot of spinning supplies and it seems like a good place to go if you want to get into spinning. She only seems to sell wooden needles, which I don't care for. Very few books, but the Porter Square Bookstore across the lot has a good knitting section. She usually has some nutty novelty yarns in her sale basket.

Jannette first became interested in this profession while working for Creative Expressions Needlework in upstate New York doing home parties and teaching and selling kits. When she moved to Manassas she was frustrated at not being able to find the right sized knitting needle for a project she began in NY. She figured she could not be the only person who knits in the area and decided to open a shop specifically to meet knitting needs.
