The Fillmore

The original owner of The Fillmore property, Emma Gates Butler, hired James W. and Merritt Reid in 1910 to draw plans for an Italianate-style dance hall at the southwest corner of Fillmore and Geary. The Majestic Hall and Majestic Academy of Dancing opened in 1912 on the second and third stories of the building, where the usual fare was Wednesday night socials and masquerade balls.

The Fillmore was a dance hall operating under various names and managements - The Get Acquainted Society, Ambassador Dance Hall - through the 1930s, and a roller rink through the 1940s. In 1952, local entrepreneur Charles Sullivan began to book some of the biggest names in black music into The Fillmore. Sullivan booked West Coast tours for performers including James Brown, Bobby "Blue" Bland and Ike & Tina Turner. During the 1950s and 1960s, San Francisco gained a reputation as the preeminent Bohemian community in the United States. This reputation was never more deserved than during the mid-sixties, when the hipster of the Beat movement grew into the hippie of a more mainstream counter-culture. By the 1950s, the literary North Beach scene had given way to the emerging Haight-Ashbury, and radical politics had a niche across the Bay at the University of California at Berkeley. The line between culture and politics is easily blurred by young people in search of adventure.
Tags: live music, performance, concerts, music, events, san francisco, reviews, the fillmore

Map this on Platial

In 2003, this Christian music mecca (you'll pardon the phrase) relocated from Central Avenue to the den of sin--the Minneapolis Warehouse District, across from the Quest--and changed its name from the New Union to Club 3 Degrees. Lounge is 16+ after 9:00 p.m. Entire club is 18+ 11:00 p.m. to close (closing times are 10:00 p.m. Wednesdays, 11:00 p.m. or midnight Thursdays, 1:00 a.m. Friday nights, 1:30 a.m. Saturday nights, 10:00 p.m. Sundays.) For safety reasons, customers under 4 feet tall must use balcony for select shows. Admission is free for children under 1 year of age.
Tags: live music, concert, allages, live show, venu

Map this on Platial

Farm 255 restaurant

        From the Farm 255 website:

"Farm 255 is a restaurant that seeks to reconnect food to its roots & people to their food. We serve local, seasonal, & sustainable food for supper nightly. In addition to the Farm we manage Full Moon Farms, a 7-acre organic/biodynamic farm in Athens. Unlike the owners of any other restaurant we know of, we are the folks sowing turnip seeds in the morning and cooking turnip greens in the evening. We supplement our harvests with those of other local family farmers and ranchers that avoid harmful chemicals and practice sustainable agriculture. Our menu, based on seasonal shifts in the field, changes as often as the weather. Our meat comes from pasture-raised animals & is hormone & antibiotic free. We purchase whole animals & use all the various cuts of meat throughout our menu.

"We are as committed to good community as we are to our cuisine. We have an open kitchen so that dinner is a dialogue, where the farmer-chefs and diner-neighbors can have a meaningful exchange; we offer live music every night in honor of its legacy in this town; and we designed our restaurant with an eye toward the history of the 1930’s building that houses it. For us here at the Farm, eating is a celebration of food’s origins, the paths it travels on the way to our tables, and the lessons learned through the journey."

I added them here because they are participating in an Outstanding in the Field farm dinner on September 10, 2006, in Athens, Georgia.
Tags: live music, biodynamic, cocktails, beer, organic, sustainable, supports local farms, seasonal menu, wine list, athens restaurant

Map this on Platial

thirtyninehotel: My favorite nightclub in Honolulu, or possibly anywhere

thirtyninehotel is a "multimedia art gallery" -- a gallery with art on the walls that's open for the First Friday Gallery Walk, that doubles as a nightclub with DJed and live music. An unmarked, unobtrusive door on the sketchy side of Hotel Street in Downtown opens on a vertical staircase going up two stories, to a big, open loft space. There's a rooftop patio through the back, and the owners are awesome folks.
Tags: live music, hawaii, art, honolulu, nightclubs, art galleries, neat, venues

Map this on Platial

Heyday Books

In 2004 , Heyday Books celebrated thirty years of deepening appreciation for the culture and history of California through its publications. Marking this anniversary was a great change for Heyday Books: the independent publisher has merged with its nonprofit wing, the Clapperstick Institute, to become Heyday Institute, completing its transition to a full-fledged 501(c)(3) nonprofit enterprise.

Malcolm Margolin founded Heyday Books in 1974 when he wrote, typeset, designed, and distributed East Bay Out, a quirky, personal, affectionate guide to the natural history of the hills and bay shore around Berkeley and Oakland. Today, Heydayƒ??s fifteen employees work with zest, creativity, integrity, and a sense of adventure to produce about two dozen books a year. In these past thirty years, Heyday has published over one hundred books and two successful magazines, News from Native California and Bay Nature, and the company has taken a lead role in dozens of prominent public education programs throughout the state.

The Ohlone Way was included on the San Francisco Chronicle's list of the top one hundred Western nonfiction books of the twentieth century and has been described by critic Pat Holt as a "mini-classic." Margolin's research for the book deepened his interest in California Indian history and culture. Numerous titles in Heyday's catalog reflect this enduring interest, as does News from Native California, Heyday's quarterly magazine.

Heyday Books covers a wide range of other topics with the same kind of thoroughness and commitment to quality that it invests in California Indian subjects. Anthologies of poetry, literature, and nonfiction writing encourage a variety of California voices to tell the state's fascinating story. Examples of such collections are California Poetry and California Uncovered. Other books, including Jewish Life in the American West and Stories Grandma Never Told, chronicle histories of California's diverse ethnic communities. Bear in Mind, The Raccoon Next Door, The Life of an Oak, and other natural history titles encourage the appreciation of California ecology in readers of all ages. Compilations of fine art and photography, including Drawn West, Structures of Utility, and At Work: The Art of California Labor show original views of California through the lens of todayƒ??s inspiring artists. Heyday has also revived a number of out-of-print classics, such as Mark Twainƒ??s San Francisco, The Shirley Letters, California: A Study of American Character, and John Steinbeck's The Harvest Gypsies.

Heyday will honor its thirty years by continuing to discover, nurture, and release into the world objects of depth, true value, and beauty. We will be giving an extended run to our Great Valley Books imprint, which promotes wide appreciation of the diverse Central Valley. The years to come will also show Heydayƒ??s renewed commitment to publishing quality childrenƒ??s literature with a regional focus, under our Heyday Kids banner. Under our California Legacy series, Santa Clara University and Heyday Books will be releasing a line of essential writings by some of Californiaƒ??s most important authors, including William Saroyan, John Muir, and Mary Austin.

In addition to the books we produce, Heyday organizes and sponsors author events throughout the state. To find out more about the lectures, book signings, readings, and panel discussions during this exciting year, be sure to check out our Upcoming Events listings. Donƒ??t miss these opportunities to meet our authors, hear about our newest titles, and learn about the incredible places, individuals, and cultures that have colored this great state over hundreds of years.
Tags: live music, jazz, music, events, reviews, berkeley, live jazz, heyday books

Map this on Platial
