Dutch Colonial Inn

Bed and Breakfast, residential area, 1 mile from downtown Holland. The Dutch Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast originated as a family residence. The initial structure, built in 1928, served as a wedding gift for the bride and groom. Now, over 70 years later, we offer several of our suites as honeymoon suites and special romantic getaways.

The Dutch Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in the charming Midwest town of Holland, MI. Holland is well known for its annual Tulip Festival, Snowmelt, over 150 special shops, and features the only Delftware factory in the USA. With beautiful beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline, autumn colors and December's Winter Fest Celebration, you can enjoy Holland year-round.
Tags: great lakes booksellers association, glba, local, accomodations

Map this on Platial

Haworth Inn and Conference Center

Located downtown Holland, 2 blocks from main street. In 1994, feeling there was both a need and an opportunity to enhance their relationship with the Holland community, Hope College began working on plans for a hotel and conference center. These plans, soon fueled by a generous combined corporate/family donation to the "Hope in the Future" campaign from Haworth Inc. and the Haworth Family, began to take shape as the Haworth Inn and Conference Center at Hope College.

Opening its doors to business on January 13, 1997, the Haworth Inn and Conference Center has fifty guest rooms and twelve conference rooms covering more than 10,000 square feet. Groups up to 350 can be accommodated in the conference rooms, while the hotel can house up to 172 people.

Since its opening, the Haworth Inn and Conference Center has attracted state and regional associations, and has hosted everything from week long business conferences to a luncheon for Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, Hope College Alumni gatherings, Tulip Time visitors, family reunions and more.
Tags: local, great lakes booksellers association, glba, accomodations, downtown holland

Map this on Platial
Jennifer works her magic!
__________________

I saw some of Jennifer Lynne's pieces at a recent Luggage Store trunk show and was excited to visit her Mission store. What a fun collection! From the sassy green frock featured in the center of the store (photo at right) to autumn-hued trousers and delicately designed tanks (also shown at right),and bouncing over to the bouyant wine bottle cork halter top, Jennifer has a delightful way of redefining everyday fashion sense.

My visit found Jennifer busily at work creating a surplice wrap sweater dress. If you catch her at a slow time, she'll tailor her designs for you on the spot!

Porcelynne opened in February of 2006 and Jennifer, who attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and gave up the business for a couple years before committing to her design work, has recently left her day job to focus on her creations full-time.

If you are in the mood for a wardrobe update and want to support a local designer while looking different-than-most, here's your place. Porcelynne also features the work of many local designers including Amy M. Cool's highly touchable recycled fabric handbags and jewelry by 19 Moons and Tessa Poppe. I'm going to have to go back for the earrings created with Lite-Brites (photo at right).

The most intriguing of Porcelynne's offerings is the "Panty-A-Month" club. You'll get a new pair of stinkies designed by Jennifer every month--imagine how fun it could be to get this monthly offering from a lover in the subsequent months after breaking up--the turmoil the poor chump would go through knowing that you'll be wearing the panties he bought you--he bought YOU--with your new lover. Oh, the possibilities!

Art work in the gallery rotates; the current show features work created on heat-sensitive fax paper with a soldering iron (shown at right). Check out Porcelynne's website for gallery show information.
Tags: porcelynne, porcelynne boutique and gallery, mission, 14th street, san francisco, california, jennifer lynne, panty of the month club, handmade, diy, jewelry, clothing, lingerie, local, recycled, reconstructed, designers, fashion

Map this on Platial
Local designer's shop. I got my lovely pink ruffly scarf there and one of my favorite (best fitting) shirts with vintage pattern. They design and construct the clothing there. Sweet little shop. Here is what their website says: donna and toots is named after my eccentric and fashionable grandmother and great aunt. A trip to their numerous walk-in closets filled to the brim with such items as leopard-printed trousers, pink Chanel suits and red vinyl galore could curl anybody's toes. Together they were trouble, throwing elegant dinner parties and the occasional soiree. They were a huge impact on a little girl whose imagination had a hard time keeping up with their antics.

I have studied fashion design in New York and London, along with having worked in San Francisco for a women's clothing designer. For the past two and half years I have been designing, manufacturing, and retailing my own designs. I love to borrow styles from the past - the 50's and the 60's - but don't put it past me to throw a modern curve.
Tags: clothing, women, local, portland, fashion, vintage, patterns, style, accessories, designer, skirts

Map this on Platial

Triple D's

The "Triple D's" are former professional boxer Joe Devlin, his brother Sonny Devlin, and their friend Tom DeCourcey. This local sports bar has been going strong for 25 years, and lately has begun to attract a local (primarily lesbian) crowd on Saturday nights.

Our reader Travis calls it a "huge lesbian hang out (with a few straights and gay men thrown in for variety). Cheap drinks, good times and karaoke make for a fun alternative to dancing your ass off." Alpenrose Restaurant & Cafe

Traditional German specialities in a beautiful setting.

The Alpenrose is not just a restaurant. It's an idea: to bring an authentic taste of the Alps to downtown Holland. To the average passerby, "the Alps" probably sparks visions of lederhosen and oompah bands, but the famed European mountain range actually carves through countries as diverse as Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland--a cornucopia of cultures and cuisines which can all claim the title "Alpen."

Years before our 1991 opening, many of us who were involved in developing this idea called Alpenrose, began cultivating an ever-deepening affinity for the people and places of the region. We hope that our on-going love affair is reflected, not only in the food we prepare and the service we deliver, but throughout the Alpenrose facility itself.

Entering the Alpenrose, it's hard to image that this building once housed a run-of-the-mill discount store. The Alpenrose is wall-to-wall wood, even support columns and ceiling rafters display exquisite wooden carvings of the Alpenrose--a rhododendron type flower found throughout the Alps.

Our dream of bringing Alpen charm to West Michigan is reflected in our multiple dining rooms as well. From our family-oriented Kitzbuhel ski lodge to the classical, fine-dining elegance of our Salzburg room to the tasteful banquets available in the Garmisch room, Alpenrose is a magnificent microcosm of the many dining experiences available in the Alpen region.
Tags: great lakes booksellers association, glba, local, restaurant, downtown holland

Map this on Platial
Along with these names is a huge mural by Jeff Jefferies, depicting historical scenes from early Grand Rapids and its industry. Towering from the ceiling are carved redwood beams from the famous Macauley mansion in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
Johnny's Foodmaster

This is the local supermarket. All of the produce comes from Dole, even the organic stuff. I never buy produce here. But I do shop here for the staples of eggs, butter, milk, and water.

I like the local teens working the registers.

When you check out, a bagger has to take your groceries out to your car and bring the cart back in. They don't let you do it yourself because the parking lot is on a hill leading directly into the Alewife Brook parkway and if you leave a cart out there it's going straight into traffic.

They have good French cookies here. I also like the frosting-filled scones from the bakery. Reminds me of my childhood.

This is the worst place to go if you need a quick something to take with you on the airplane. They've got a lot of junk food and no deli to speak of. Also a very poor source of cheese, though they have hummus covered.
Tags: foodmaster, convenience stores, grocery stores supermarkets, grocery store, local, close, workingclass, jello, sausages, local teens

Map this on Platial

Curragh Irish Pub

        Hearty Irish fare.

We wanted our name to tell a lot about our pub. The Curragh is headquarters of Flat Racing in Ireland. Written evidence of racing dates back to the third century when chariot races were held at the “Cuireach" — the Gaelic word for racecourse — on the lands known today as the Curragh Racecourse and Training Grounds. The Curragh hosts all five Classic Races and up to thirteen other quality race days annually. It is owned by the Irish Turf Club, founded in Kildare in the 1760's.
Tags: great lakes booksellers association, glba, local, restaurant, downtown holland

Map this on Platial
