American River Parkway

At the end of Arden Way, the American River Parkway nature area is easily accessible. For a small fee, there's a nice little parking lot to keep your car in that puts you right on the Jedediah Smith Rec. Trail. Theoretically, you could also park your car on a neighborhood street just a little farther away... Not that I'm suggesting that.
Anyway, this may be the best place for Sacramento area birdwatching that I've been to. The river is beautiful, and depending on the season, you can sometimes travel on foot to wooded juts of land that are islands much of the time. This is also a good place for native plant study.
In the evening, this place is thick with deer. You may even see the occasional coyote.
Tags: beautiful, birds, river, nature, flora, fauna, birdwatching, botany

Map this on Platial
The old name for Sun Moon Lake was "Where water and sand meet". Can you imagine what this immense stretch of deep blue-green water looked like in earlier times when it was a shallow marsh covered with vibrant green water plants? According to historical records. before you stand today.

Many have heard of Guang-hua Island. but only few people realize that the rest of the island. now covered with water, once stood tall lake a pyramid. The base of this pyramid was once encircled by a clustered village of thao indigenous people.

Many people like to observe nature, but few people know about the many nature trails at Sun Moon Lake. If you're not careful, you may find yourself walking past jade colored cicadas with fresh new wings as they silently come out of molting by the trail side.

many have heard of the thao indigenous people's harvest dance where they celebrate the year's harvest while they pound grain, but only few know that while superstitious Han people spend the seventh lunar month( the ghost month) cautiously waiting for the night when the ghost's door closes, on that very night the thao pound grain and sing to sunmoon the spirits of their ancestors.
Tags: nature, sun moon lake

Map this on Platial
This park is gorgeous! It contains nearly 978 acres of wetlands and rolling hills. There's a boardwalk near the visitors' center that lets you walk through some of the wetlands. This is an unbeatable place for birdwatching!
The visitors' center has a small but very nice museum in it. Many exhibits focus on the Ohlone tribe, who inhabited the land prior to European invasion.
Tags: nature, wildlife refuge, wetlands, birdwatching

Map this on Platial

Wieliczka Salt Mine

This deposit of rock salt in Wieliczka-Bochnia has
been mined since the 13th century. Spread over nine levels, it
has 300 km of galleries with works of art, altars, and statues
sculpted in the salt, making a fascinating pilgrimage into the
past of a major industrial undertaking.

The Hungarian princess Kinga was to marry the sovereign of Krakow. She wanted to bring a wealthy gift for her fiancé. As the people in Poland had everything except salt, she asked her father for a salt mine as adowry, which he provided. She threw one of her rings into a salt mine of her father and travelled to Poland. Near Krakow, in Wieliczka she told the people to dig a deep pit. The miners found salt, and enclosed in the first piece of salt they mined was the ring of Kinga
Tags: nature, park, history, heritage unesco, mine underground

Map this on Platial
Carthage was founded in the 9th century B.C. on

into a great trading empire covering much of the Mediterranean
and was home to a brilliant civilization. In the course of the
long Punic wars, Carthage occupied territories belonging to
Rome, which finally destroyed its rival in 146 B.C. A second

the 10th century, then enlarged at the beginning of the 13th
century by Sebastocrator Kaloyan, who ordered a second
two?storey building to be erected next to it. The frescoes in
this second church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most
important collections of medieval paintings. The ensemble is
completed by a third church, built at the beginning of the 19th
century. This site is one of the most complete and perfectly
preserved monuments of east European medieval

The pools are a habitat for fairy shrimp and are a good place to go birdwatching.
Ichkeul National Park

The Ichkeul lake and wetland are a major stopover
point for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds, such as
ducks, geese, storks and pink flamingoes, who come to feed and
nest there. Ichkeul is the last remaining lake in a chain that
once extended across North Africa. The Park was inscribed on
the List of World Heritage in Danger during the 20th session of
the Committee (1996) as a result of significant deterioration
in the characteristics for which the site was inscribed. The
construction of three dams on rivers supplying Lake Ichkeul and
its marshes has cut off almost all inflow of fresh water,
causing a destructive increase in the salinity of the lake and
marshes. Reed beds, sedges and other fresh-water plant species
have been replaced by halophytic plants, with a consequent
sharp reduction in the migratory bird populations dependent on
the habitat the lake formerly provided. According to IUCN, all
reed-dependent species such as purple heron, purple gallinule
and reed warblers have disappeared. In June 1998 IUCN provided
technical data to indicate that the salinity of the water in
the lake may have reached excessively high proportions and that
the chances of recovery of the World Heritage values of the
site may be fast receding and expressed its concern at the slow
pace and effectiveness of the implementation of the
rehabilitation program by the State Party. The Tunisian
government has undertaken various measures to retain freshwater
in the lakes on a year-round basis and reduce the salinity of
the lake. The World Heritage Committee, during its 1998
session, recommended sending an expert mission to the site to
look into possibilities of developing additional rehabilitation
measures for Ichkeul and determining progress in the
implementation of mitigation measures by the Tunisian
    authorities.
Tags: nature, park, history, heritage unesco

Map this on Platial

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

While the hiking here is great (the park is on the Pacific Crest Trail), the main reason to visit this park is Burney Falls. At 129 feet, they're certainly not the biggest falls around, but take my word for it, they are spectacularly beautiful.

A word of advice about vacationing here, though. I have yet to try camping in this area, but I'm guessing that it would be a far superior experience to lodging in the nearby town of Fall River Mills. The only place to shop for food was a tiny convenience store, and the only restaurant in town was a nightmare. If you're intent on staying at a motel, the town of Burney might be a better bet- it at least has a Safeway.
Tags: waterfall, hiking, scenic, nature, falls, scenery

Map this on Platial
It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the entire 500 mile redwood belt and is accessible to all with convenient services provided along the way. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Take time to picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft or bike ride in the cool hush of these ancient redwood forests.
Tags: drive, scenic, nature, trees, redwoods, giants, Avenue of the Giants, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Highway 101

Map this on Platial

Aliso Peak at Seaview Park

The Aliso Peak trail is a half-mile trail that starts at Seaview Park in Laguna Hills and ends at Aliso Peak. Views of the Pacific Ocean can be seen along the entire trail.

You start on the dirt path on the south side of the park. The first quarter mile is flat and offers great views inland of Saddleback Mountain and Aliso Viejo.

Picnic tables can be found about every 100 feet - ideal spots for lunch or even a quiet place to read.

Plaques along the trail also identify the local vegetation. Look for summer holly and laurel sumac along the way.

The trail seems to end at a concrete platform. A dirt trail to the left of the platform continues toward Aliso Peak. The trail drops down a steep hill with loose rocks and dirt along this ridge. Watch your step.

After you scoot alongside a residential road and farther down the hill, you suddenly begin a short and steep climb toward Aliso Peak, which stands a not-so-towering 600 feet.

The final 20 feet to the peak is extremely steep. Hikers without hiking shoes can use the wooden steps on the right side of the trail.

Views of South Laguna to the south and Aliso Beach and the Aliso Creek Golf Course to the immediate north are unadulterated, unlike the views from other coastal bluffs that are spoiled by cell-phone towers and power lines. A bench at the peak is a perfect place to sit and soak in the views of the ocean, or cuddle up for a special moment with your hiking partner.

Time for the hard part - hiking back up 800 feet to your car.

                    INSTRUCTIONS

1) Get up off of the couch
2) (but bring the remote control with you)
3) Go to the south west corner of 3rd and Arch
4) Use your remote to activate the park

        9 September – 21 October 2006*

        Gallery Joe Bird Park
        3rd and Arch Streets
        Philadelphia, PA

At the installation site, pressing buttons on any (TV, DVD, VCR, audio, etc…) remote control triggers a myriad of responses ranging from subtle (bird calls or soft sounds emanating from hidden speakers, changes in the ambient lighting) to bombastic (more dramatic sound effects, explosions, strobe lights, or projected images). Each key press generates a unique combination of effects. Viewers may bring any remote control from home to activate the installation.
Tags: tv, nature, streetart, art, gallery joe, sound, interaction design, philly, remote

Map this on Platial
"This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park’s trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner’s Cove, across from the campground. The park’s name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the black oystercatcher. [April 15, 2005] While I was sitting at the desk tonight, a bird of unimaginable tinyness flew in and decided to perch all around the room. At first I thought it was a large moth, then I thought it was a bat, and then I thought it was a very large, chubby hummingbird. Here it is, sitting next to a magazine.

It was a really remarkable creature. We had to throw a towel over it and take it outside to get it to leave the office.
Armstrong Redwoods SR

The serene, majestic beauty of this Grove is a living reminder of the magnificent primeval redwood forest that covered much of this area before logging operations began during the 19th century. Armstrong Redwoods preserves stately and magnificent Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as the coast redwood. These trees stand together as a testament to the wonders of the natural world. The Grove offers solace from the hustle and bustle of daily life, offering the onlooker great inspiration and a place for quiet reflection.

The ancient coast redwood is the tallest living thing on our planet! These remarkable trees live to be 500-1,000 years old, grow to a diameter of 12-16 feet, and stand from 200-250 feet tall. Some trees survive to over 2000 years and tower above 350 feet. Coast redwoods are classified as temperate rainforests and they need wet and mild climates to survive. The rainfall in Armstrong Redwoods averages 55 inches per year and the trees are often shrouded in a mystical fog that helps to maintain the moist conditions needed for the redwoods to survive. To find out more about these magnificent trees click the link About Coast Redwoods to the left.

The reserve includes a visitor center, large outdoor amphitheater, self-guided nature trails, and a variety of picnic facilities. While you can drive into the park, the best way to experience the dramatic affect of the towering redwoods, is to park in the lot at the park entrance and walk in for free. All of the park features are a short easy stroll along level trails that are disability accessible.

Although no camping is available in the redwood grove, there is a campground at Austin Creek State Recreation Area, which is adjacent to the park. Austin Creek is accessed through the same entrance as Armstrong Redwoods and its rolling hills, open grasslands, conifers, and oaks are a beautiful and dramatic contrast to the dense canopy of the redwood grove. For more information click on link to the left.

The redwood ecosystem is a very fragile one. Every effort is being made to preserve and protect this Grove but it can only be done with your help. When you visit, please do not disturb or remove any natural features of the park, stay on designated trails and do not cross low- level fenceline. We hope you enjoy a serene and rejuvenating visit among these inspiring giants.

NOTE: Dogs are allowed on leash in the developed areas such as paved roads, picnic areas and campground. Not allowed on trails or back country trail ca
Tags: forest, nature, coast, park, events, redwood, ancient, reviews, sequoia, grove, guerneville, armstrong redwoods sr

Map this on Platial
