Cinematically inclined bar with stage and private performance space. Buddy Johnnie E. used to work here while doing his travelling cinema, I lived just blocks away, we'd explore the empty 50K gallon mayonnaise vats dangling from the ceiling and walk the catwalks undetected by the drinking patrons below. Other good memories include the Burlesque Humour Acrobatics of the Pontani Sisters, a very intimate performance by the Rachels and an inspiring show by the Tracktenberg Family Slide Show Players (with the 9 year old drummer). That back room is also notorious for about 20 very loudly breaking beer glasses, especially during movie events (that i'd always try to scam free tix to with carrie).

I don't think that the Polly Magoo is still open, but when it was, I would say that it was the quintessential Parisian dive bar. The wonderful thing about it was that it was right there, in the middle of town, in the center of the most expensive real estate in the country, overflowing until dawn with seedy drunks and marginal characters of all kinds. Spending a night at the Polly Magoo was always a little bit like going on an anthropological journey. I once saw a woman in her early 50's do the splits in the middle of the place, right on the cigarette-butt-strewn and beer-washed floor.

All of a sudden, the big bad bald waiter is yelling at these 2 older creepy guys and a shaved headed young totally spaced out girl for puking on the bench, "She NOT ok, obviously, get her out of here!" One guy hobbled her over to the bathrooms while the first guy cleaned up the mess and shyly glanced around. They went outside, she lay down on the sidewalk for a bit. :( The main chef was decked out in full drag also, long dangly earings, false eyelashes, hair in a bun, her 50 year old jowels jiggling as she rang the 'order up' bell.

Saturday, February 11, 2006 5:30 pm. Named one of the top ten Parades in the world by IFEA, the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is one of the few remaining night illuminated Parades in the country. Started in the 1860's by the Chinese in San Francisco as a means to educate the community about their culture, the Parade and Festival have grown to be the largest celebration of Asian culture outside of Asia. Since 1958, the parade has been under the direction of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The Parade goes up Market to Geary St, then goes right on powell for a block before taking another right on Post. It then turns right on Kearney St, where it goes on for a few blocks to its end point

i have a mandolin i play it all night long it makes me want to kill myself i also have a dobro made in some mountain range sounds like a mountain range in love but when i turn up the tone on my electric guitar i'm afraid of the dark without you close to me i went out to the forest and caught a hundred thousand fireflies as they ricochet round the room they remind me of your starry eyes someone else's might not have made me so sad but this is the worst night I ever had 'cause i'm afraid of the dark without you close to me you won't be happy with me, but give me one more chance you won't be happy anyway why do we still live here in this repulsive town? all our friends are in new york why do we keep shrieking, when we mean soft things? we should be whispering all the time...
