Apop Records ( Columbia, MO )

Apop Records is an independently owned and operated record store whose purpose is to make available those recordings that are often over-looked by both the chain stores, and other independent shops. Apop is dedicated to providing the best music, both obscure and popular, to the widest audience possible. While you will find staple indie, punk, rock, etc releases at Apop, you'll also see titles available nowhere else. We do not limit what we carry to a specific genre, nor are we concerned with the latest fad, trend, or the fickle taste of the fashion music "underground". In addition to stocking cds and vinyl, one can also find a variety of literature, publications, tracts, and videos. We at Apop do not believe in the censoring of unpopular information and strive to make available products that express a multitude of ideas, beliefs and platforms. We cater neither to the left nor the right; for that matter Apop has no political ties, whatsoever. We are always searching for both new and old music, books, information to distribute, if you think we are missing something let us know. Nothing will be considered taboo.

Overtoom 301 Squat

In the hull of an old film school, this gov't sanctioned community squat hosts various noise events, but my favorite is the nearly regular (monday nights) Kraakgeluiden, where various "musicians" are matched up and given a week to practice. The place is very professional, has seen tons of structural and code imporvements and isn't intimidating as some squat scenese can be. Think of it as a sorta of really fringe jazz scene, in fact this is how people treat the shows, very reverently. If you come late, come in quietly.
Tags: noise, abstract, music, sound, experimental

Map this on Platial

La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's Dream House

This subtly lit apartment filled with soft carpet, gently drifting shadowy mobiles and roomfulls of tremendously huge speakers, is a sound experiment/piece that blasts you with audio sine waves, letting the sounds bounce and fill the rooms with a network of sound, a field of sound. The field is modified by any variations in it's rippling texture, so if you walk around, you are 'playing' the sound as an instrument.
This is an amazing place to trip out and float in space.
Open September 22-June 22 each year, Thursdays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. to midnight.

Vinylla (Gent, BE )

snuistergehalte
Gevaarlijk hoog. Het weekbudget is snel gespendeerd.

Orange County's hippest store for punk vinyls, CDs, and tickets. It's a real find for "alternative" music lovers. Customers typically pay between $1.99 to $14.99 for rock and new wave albums. The cheapest records by the door cost just 9 cents, while collectibles like singles from the Beatles go for $125 to $200.
Tags: noise, record store, vinyls, cds, tickets, alternative, punk, indie, hole in the wall, music, vinyl, vinyl store

Map this on Platial

Rotate This! (Toronto, CA)

        Rotate This
620 Queen St. W.
Toronto, ON, Canada
M6J 1E4

Music makes us happy. And we still like to have fun.

We're one of Toronto's leading and best known independent record stores. We stock new releases from independent bands and artists from Canada, the U.S., England, and around the world. We're committed (actually, obsessed would be more accurate) with stocking as much of this on vinyl as is possible.

Genre-wise, we're down with almost everything: the hip, the hop, the punk, the jazz, the hardcore, the reggae, the electronic, the indie, the un-indie. No classical or nu-country, however.

Rotate This is an equal-genre retailer. We do not exclude titles from stock based on race, creed, culture, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. We might not, however, stock a title we feel is not appropriate for our store, for any number of reasons. You want Brittany? Wicked, so do we. But we don't sell her records. (Well, ok, maybe the UK 12"ers but please don't tell anyone).

We stock used vinyl as well, although the turnover is extremely high, and we find it difficult to keep much stock. If you're looking to rid yourself of your dusty old record collection in exchange for some $$s, we'd be more than happy to take a look. We are rather picky though, so please don't bring in your Poco lps.

We're also an official ticket outlet for most of the major concert promoters in town.

Next time you're out music shopping, and you're looking for stuff that you just can't find at the mall, definitely stop by. We swear that we won't judge your purchases. Honest! (Kidding!) (No, really!)
